Apple’s new $2,000 Studio Display has a webcam and iPhone chip inside

Packed into a body that looks like the new M1 iMacs, Apple has built the perfect 27-inch display for creators.

This screen can hit 600 nits of brightness and has a 5k resolution. Apple has also packed in True tone to adapt to the light in your room. But don’t worry because you can turn it off when you want to take advantage of the whole p3 wide colour gamut.

Since there is an Apple A13 Bionic chipset, there are some extra features packed into this display. For instance, Apple has built lots of mics, and a 12-megapixel webcam into the Studio Display to it can be the perfect video calling device for work. It even supports Centre Stage and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.

The display also allows Apple to provide 3 USB C ports and a single Thunderbolt cable on the back. That means you can easily hook up other displays or computers, and it can even fast charge the new 14-inch MacBook Pro.

This display starts at $1,599 USD (roughly, $2,000 CAD).

Apple unveils new ‘monster’ M1 Ultra chip

Apple announced its latest chip during its ‘Peek Performance’ event on March 8th: the M1 Ultra chip.

In short, the new chipset uses Apple’s ‘UltraFusion’ architecture to connect two M1 Max chips to boost performance. Apple claims UltraFusion offers four times more bandwidth than other leading chip interconnect technologies.

The M1 Ultra appears as one chip to software despite effectively being two separate chips.

M1 Ultra also supports up to 128GB of RAM, has a 20-core CPU with 16 high-performance and four high-efficiency cores, plus a 64-core GPU. Apple says M1 Ultra is nearly eight times faster than Apple’s M1 chip.

Moreover, Apple claims that M1 Ultra delivers higher performance than leading 16-core PC desktop chips while using significantly less power. The company claims Ultra used 1/3rd the power of the leader “popular discrete GPU,” although Apple didn’t specify what that GPU was.

Apple also boasted about the tight integration between its M1 silicon and macOS, which brings performance and security benefits.

Apple reveals a new iPad Air with M1 chip

There’s a new iPad Air coming out this year with modern specs that bring it back in line with Apple’s pricing scheme.

The updated unit has an M1 chip bringing it in line with the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air. While we were expecting to see the tablet get bumped up to the Apple A15 Bionic chipset, this signifies an even more aggressive tablet strategy for Apple. Suggesting that the next time we see an iPad Pro, it might have an M2 chip.

This year, Apple also added a larger 12-megapixel selfie camera, so every iPad model has the cool centre stage feature for video calls. The iPad Air is also being bumped up to support 5G.

As with the previous model, the iPad Air supports Apple Pencil 2 and even a USB-C port, but this post is 2x as fast as the previous model. The screen on this model appears to be the same anti-reflective liquid retina display as the previous version. None of this is a letdown considering how good the iPad Air has been for years.

One of the cooler updates is a new update to iMovie that makes it easier for JR filmmakers to make professional-looking content. This is less of an iPad update, but since iMovie comes free with all iPads, it is neat to see it getting some new features.

There are some new colours as well that are somewhat pastel looking but not as vibrant as some of Apple’s other products. The colours are Blue, pink, purple, Starlite and space grey.

Telecom company executives comment on Freedom Mobile’s potential sell-off

The chief financial officer of BCE says Freedom Mobile will have a hard time competing against other telecom companies if Shaw puts it up for sale.

According to the Globe and Mail, Glen LeBlanc believes there’s a “high probability” Rogers will sell Freedom Mobile to gain approval for its merger with Shaw. He made the comments at Scotiabank’s telecom, media and technology conference.

The statement comes on the heels of Innovation, Science and Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s comments saying Rogers can’t require all of Shaw’s wireless licenses as doing so will decrease competition.

Numerous parties are interested in acquiring Freedom Mobile, including company founder Anthony Lacavera and telecom giant Québecor Inc.

Québecor released several statements since Minister Champagne made his comments, praising the government for wanting to create competition.

But as The Globe reports, LeBlanc believes Québecor purchasing the company could create distractions.

“It’s going to take their attention away from their core market in Quebec,” he said.

Minister Champagne’s comments came just before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology released a report outlining suggestions on the merger.

One of those was to launch consultations examining separating businesses that build infrastructure networks, and those that sell retail services, as doing so could increase competition.

Peter Nowak, vice-president of insight and engagement at TekSavvy, says the matter should’ve been discussed long ago.

“In the context of structural separation, one approach the government could take with the merger is to allow it, but only if Rogers and Shaw agree to split off their network operations into an entirely separate entity,” Nowak wrote in a blog post on the company’s website.

“This could set the table for a new and more competitive telecommunications marketplace in Canada, with other big companies following suit either voluntarily or through government requirements.”

Government of Ontario tables legislation to speed up delivery of broadband projects

The Government of Ontario has tabled legislation to bring high-speed internet to underserved communities as soon as possible.

Dubbed the Getting Ontario Connected Act, 2022, it will remove barriers and make it easier for companies to build infrastructure delivering high-speed internet across the province.

The Province notes it is currently investing $900 million towards 180 broadband, cellular, and satellite projects.

If approved, the legislation will “provide the tools and assurances that internet service providers need to get shovels in the ground as early as this summer.”

It will also improve the One Call process of pinpointing the location of underground lines, water mains, and gas pipelines. The work will be completed by one person, in some situations, instead of being duplicated for every project. Doing so will reduce the waiting period for internet safety providers and lead to faster construction, resulting in more broadband infrastructure.

“It often takes businesses and builders too long to start construction because of how complicated it is to get information about underground infrastructure,” Ross Romano, Minister of Government and Consumer Services, said in a statement. “These are costly delays to building critical high-speed internet projects and housing developments that we can’t afford, which is why we’re accelerating how quickly workers can get shovels in the ground.”
