Virgin Plus offering $50/25GB winback plan to some current and former customers

Virgin Plus is emailing some of its past (and current) customers a code for a $50/25GB plan, as part of its winback promotion.

As shared by RedFlagDeals user ‘Drew81,’ the winback promotion is applicable to multiple lines. ‘Drew81’ had an active Virgin connection when they received the promo email, which could mean that Virgin sent them the email by mistake.

Regardless, ‘Drew81’ was able to call Virgin and share the promo code from the email to claim a $50/25GB plan for all their active Virgin lines.

As expected, this plan doesn’t exist on Rogers’ website — the closest one I can find is a $58/15GB plan.

If you’re a former or current Virgin Plus user, check your email. You too might be able to claim the carrier’s $50/25GB winback plan.

Bill C-11 won’t impact user-generated content, Heritage Minister says

Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez says Bill C-11 is a necessity for Canadians.

He made the comments during a discussion on the final day of the Canadian Media Producers Association’s Prime Time conference, a report from Cartt states.

“Things have changed, and we know we need these streamers to contribute to our culture, to our system, to how we tell our own stories,” he said.

Also known as the Online Streaming Act, the bill aims to regulate online streaming services under the same rules as Canadian broadcasters. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will serve as the governing body.

Rodriguez said he believes the CRTC has the experience to handle the bill once approved, but the government will be providing more resources, so the commission will have “everything they need to do the job once C-11 is adopted.

A similar act, Bill C-10, was introduced before the 2021 federal election but died at the bench. Rodriguez said the government addressed the criticisms it received in Bill C-10 when working on the new bill.

“I think we brought the necessary changes to the bill to reassure them and to make sure that platforms are in and users are out. So that means if you and I decide to sing a song together and to post it well, even if it’s beautiful, it’s not going to be regulated,” he said.

He said creators making money off their content wouldn’t be “impacted by this bill,” a concern voiced by critics of the bill.

At a panel hosted the day before Rodriguez spoke, Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s chief business officer, said the bill could potentially threaten creativity in Canada.

Kyncl raised concerns the new rules would impact Canadian content viewed by a worldwide audience. “Anything through the bill that would negatively impact that is simply going to hurt the creative community in Canada. And that’s not the intent of the government,” he said.

While not answering Kyncl’s comments directly, Rodriguez said the bill wouldn’t regulate user-generated content.

Tom Holland returns to ‘Fortnite’ as Nathan Drake in ‘Uncharted’ crossover

Fortnite‘s next big crossover will feature Uncharted’s Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer.

The crossover was revealed after Fortnite creator Epic Games teased the collaboration late on February 11th with a treasure hunt website. After fans solved a 14-character password puzzle (spoiler, the solution was: ‘sicparvismagna’), the treasure hunt site revealed a trailer for the crossover:

Fortnite players will be able to acquire skins representing the movie and game forms of the Uncharted characters when they arrive in the game on February 17th. Epic Games items will be available in the Fortnite item shop. The movie will hit theatres on February 18th.

Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake in the upcoming movie, which makes this his second Fortnite appearance after he joined the game as Spider-Man in December.

As The Verge points out, the trailer only highlights the four skins, but there will likely be other cosmetics coming as part of the collaboration.

How to share audio from one iPhone to multiple headphones/earbuds

If you live in Apple’s ecosystem, there’s a cool trick that allows you to listen to music or watch content easily with a friend. Apple calls this feature ‘Audio Sharing,’ and the only downside is it works with compatible AirPod and Beats earbuds and headphones.

Compatible headphones/earbuds

  • AirPods Max
  • AirPods Pro
  • AirPods (all models)
  • Powerbeats
  • Solo Pros
  • Powerbeats3 Wireless
  • Beats Solo3 Wireless
  • BeatsX
  • Beats Flex
  • Beats Fit Pro

Notably, the only earbuds that are not on this list are the more low-end Beats Studio Buds that don’t feature an Apple H1 chip.

You’ll also need an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with iOS 13.1 or later. Since most people should already be on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or newer, this shouldn’t be much of a problem.

How to use Audio sharing

When you’re watching/listening to content, open the AirPlay controls. If you’re already using a compatible pair of headphones, there’s a small button that says ‘Share Audio.’

Tapping on this button brings up an interface that tells you to bring the other headphones, or the device they’re connected to close to the iPhone/iPad that’s playing the content.

In my testing, I started with AirPods Max connected to my iPhone. Then I opened the AirPlay controls on the YouTube video I was watching, tapped on ‘share audio’ and took the AirPods out of their case. Once I brought them within a few inches of my iPhone, they automatically connected.

What’s useful is once you’re connected, you can control the volume for each set of headphones independently.

To stop sharing, open up the AirPlay menu again and deselect the small checkmark beside the name of the headphones. If you’ve used AirPlay 2 before to group speakers in your home, this works the same.

AirPlay tips

AirPlay can be a little confusing if you’ve never used it before, but it’s simply branding for the Apple feature that will stream audio/video content from one device to another.

Most apps that play video or music have an AirPlay button stuck somewhere noticeable if you’re on an Apple device. However, some apps will bury the button behind their own casting tech (looking at you Google).

The most straightforward place to access AirPlay is through ‘Control Centre’ since it’s always the same there. On most iPhones/iPads, you access this by swiping down from the top right-hand corner. On older devices like iPhones with a Home Button, you need to swipe up from the bottom.

The AirPlay controls are in the top right of the ‘Now Playing’ interface. If you have compatible speakers, you can also use this menu to play multi-room audio in your home.

Knowing I’ll never have this Google smart lamp makes me want it more

Google makes a variety of products — many good, some bad. I’m generally a fan of the company’s smart home devices, despite some issues. Well, apparently Google also has a smart lamp, called ‘dLight,’ that you can’t buy unless you work for the company.

And it looks great.

Ben Gold, a designer at Google, tweeted about the dLight and shared a picture of it. Gold also confirmed the dLight would “likely never be for sale outside of the company.”

Android Police added more detail, reporting that the lamp supports Wi-Fi connectivity and has an Assistant logo, suggesting it could be controlled via Google’s Home app and through Assistant. The lamp doesn’t have RGB lighting, but Gold noted it offers variable colour temperature and various presets.

Moreover, the light can pivot “quite a bit” and can either shine down to illuminate your desk or shine towards you to light up your face. That makes the dLight a great option for video calls, which is part of the appeal (at least for me). I could use a much better desk lamp situation to help illuminate my face for meetings.

Apparently, the light costs between $170 and $180 USD (about $216 to $228). While that’s a bit more than I’d like to pay for a desk lamp, it doesn’t much matter since I won’t be able to buy it anyway.
