Chatr offering one month free credit to new activations

Rogers’ flanker brand Chatr is offering one month free on new activations of any plan until February 14th.

Whether you pick the provider’s highest $70/mo plan, lowest $25/mo plan, or anything in between, you can claim a credit equal to one month’s fee.

To claim the credit, you’ll need to first activate a plan, then reply to a text message from Chatr sent after activation. Finally, you’ll need to keep the plan you activate for at least three bills — Chatr notes the credit will be applied on the third-anniversary date, and changing your plan will forfeit the credit.

Chatr’s plans are as follows:

  • $70/mo 20GB and Unlimited Canada/U.S. talk
  • $60/mo 15GB and Unlimited Canada/U.S. talk
  • $50/mo 10GB and Unlimited Canada/U.S. talk
  • $40/mo 4.5GB and Unlimited Canada-wide talk
  • $35/mo 2GB and Unlimited Canada-wide talk
  • $25/mo 500MB and Unlimited Canada-wide talk

The plans all offer data at 3G speed, unlimited Canada, U.S. and international messaging, call display, call forwarding, and group calling.

You can learn more on Chatr’s website.

Koodo’s $58/15GB promo plan returns just days after being removed

Just two days after removing the $58/15GB promotional plan, Telus flanker brand Koodo re-added the offer to its website.

As before, Koodo’s $58 plan comes with 10GB of data and a bonus 5GB of data. Once again, Koodo lists the plan as a limited-time offer, although it’s unclear how long the promo will stick around (or if it will return after Koodo inevitably removes it). Oddly, Koodo’s website also still lists the $58/10GB version of the plan, although it doesn’t make sense to buy while the 15GB variant is available.

Koodo first added the $58/15GB plan back in January but removed it in February. Rogers’ Fido also offered the plan, removed it, then added it back on February 11th. Bell’s Virgin Plus has the $58/15GB promo as well but hasn’t followed the others in removing and re-adding it.

None of Koodo’s other plans have changed, and the $58/15GB promo is still available for customers who bring their own phone or customers who buy a phone on Koodo’s Tab.

All of Koodo’s plans include call display, voicemail, call waiting, and conference calling. Most of the carrier’s plans — including the $58/15GB promo — also offer unlimited Canada-wide calling and unlimited international messaging.

You can learn more about the plan on Koodo’s website.

Apple’s AirPods Max are $180 off on Amazon Canada

Apple’s pricey AirPods Max are currently 23 percent off on Amazon Canada.

That’s right; Apple’s expensive over-ear headphones are $599.99, which is $180 off their original price.

This deal is only available for the ‘Sky Blue’ and ‘Green’ variants of the over-ear headphone.

The AirPods Max offer active noise cancellation to block outside noise and spatial audio with dynamic head tracking that provides a theatre-like audio experience.

In Patrick O’Rouke’s review of the headphones, he said the following:

“Despite their obvious issues, the AirPods Max are my favourite pair of over-ear headphones I’ve ever used. They’re extremely comfortable even if you’re wearing them for an entire day, look decidedly high-end and feature the best audio quality I’ve ever encountered in a pair of headphones.”

Drake uses Bitcoin for his million dollar Super Bowl bets

In a fun twist, Canadian superstar Drake has made a million-dollar Super Bowl bet with Bitcoin.

A report from the Toronto Star mentions that Drake placed a series of bets totalling $1.6 million CAD, with the largest backing the L.A. Rams to win the big game.

This is part of a wider push amongst top athletes and celebrities lately for digital currencies. Even L.A. Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr asked the NFL to pay out his salary in Bitcoin last November.

Beckham Jr even commented on an Instagram post from Drake showing off his crypto-based bets, saying, “It’s time.”

While more celebrities are stepping into the new world of cryptocurrency, I would be hesitant to take this as a form of legitimization for digital money.

One of the reasons people like Bitcoin is that, unlike a normal currency, it can spike and grow relatively quickly over time. However, this also means it can deflate just as quickly. It’s kind of like investing in stocks rather than exchanging money from one currency to another.

Additionally, some users like being able to remove their wealth from a major currency that’s tied to a government. Others like its growth as a possible hedge against rising inflation. However, there are even arguments against that. There are pros and cons all over the crypto conversation. You can read a little more about them here.

Overall, this means it’s easy for multi-millionaire Drake to take that risk with a million-dollar crypto bet, but it might not be as savvy for everyone.

The agent also said that “if you pre-register your email address here, and make sure to activate using the same pre-registered email, you can get the promo benefits even if you activate the plan after February 18th.”

Android 13 Developer Preview 1 can auto clear your clipboard after one hour

Google recently launched the Android 13 Developer Preview 1, showing off several new features for developers to try out in the updated operating system.

Android 13 is introducing a function that can clear your clipboard automatically if you haven’t copied anything recently. This was spotted in Esper’s Android 13 deep-dive, which indicates that the feature is disabled by default. The feature will remove your Android clipboard after 60 minutes if you don’t copy or cut anything new.

Technical editor Mishaal Rahman posted a clip of how this feature works on YouTube:

Rahman reduced the timeout to five seconds for the purposes of the video.

Alongside this feature, Android 13 DP1 silences keyboard haptics and other vibrations when you disable the keyboard, and ‘Material You’ adds dynamic colours to all app icons.

You can learn more about what’s new on the Android 13 DP1, here.

YouTube’s chief business officer raises concerns on Bill C-11

YouTube’s chief business officer says Bill C-11 is a potential threat to Canadian creativity.

“It’s a net contributor to the country. It’s a lot of self-employment happening by amazing creative entrepreneurs creating other jobs,” Robert Kyncl said at the media production conference, Prime Time 2022, earlier this week.

He said the platform contributed 34,000 jobs and $923 million in economic benefits to Canada in 2020.

The bill, also known as the Online Streaming Act, was introduced earlier this month and focuses on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) governing streaming companies, like YouTube, under the same rules as Canadian broadcasters.

But many are concerned about what the bill would mean for free speech, arguing rules from the broadcast area aren’t a one size fits all solution to regulate streaming on the internet.

As reported by Cartt, Kyncl said 90 percent of content made by Canadians on YouTube is available to viewers around the world, and the bill could undermine this.

“Anything through the bill that would negatively impact that is simply going to hurt the creative community in Canada. And that’s not the intent of the government,” he said. “But sometimes you pass things, and then there’s unintended consequences.”

Planned 5G BlackBerry smartphone reportedly dies, crushing hopes of few remaining fans

OnwardMobilities’ plan to release a new keyboard-equipped, Android-powered 5G BlackBerry device is reportedly dead, according to a report from CrackBerry and Android Police.

Texas-based OnwardMobility first announced the device back in 2020 following TCL’s decision to no longer license the once-formidable Canadian company’s name. Rumours pointed to a smartphone that looked very similar to 2015’s BlackBerry Priv, which featured a sliding screen and a physical keyboard. The smartphone was reportedly set to release in 2021, but that didn’t end up happening.

CrackBerry’s report, which cites “multiple sources,” says that “OnwardMobility and their BlackBerry 5G keyboard phone dream are dead.” Android Police says that OnwardMobility’s license to use the brand has been cancelled and that BlackBerry CEO John Chen is no longer interested in licensing the companies name.

Though BlackBerry exited the consumer smartphone industry back in 2016, it licensed its brand to TCL. This resulted in the release of several BlackBerry-branded smartphones, including the relatively well-received KEYone line.

Though it’s probably still a little early to be entirely certain, it’s likely that this was the once iconic Canadian tech company’s last chance at resurrection in the smartphone space — especially if Chen is no longer interested in licensing the now security software-focused companies name.

Last month, BlackBerry shut down support for BB10-powered devices, which includes smartphones like the Classic, the Z10 and the Q10.
