Open RAN company Parallel Wireless expanding to Canada

U.S.-based Parallel Wireless is opening a 5G research and development center in Canada’s capital city.

The Open RAN company is focusing on further developing 5G radio access and expanding its global presence.

Inuinnaqtun added to Microsoft Translator as part of efforts to preserve endangered language

A week after Microsoft added the Inuit language of Inuktitut to its Microsoft Translator app, Microsoft says feedback has been positive and residents are asking for more updates.

Now the company is further expanding its inclusion of Inuit languages by offering text translations for Inuinnaqtun.

Like Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun is part of the Inuktut dialect. Fewer than 600 people speak Inuinnaqtun as their mother tongue, and it’s on the list of UNESCO’s endangered languages.

The company announced it also updated Inuktitut language models on the app.

Inuktitut is the primary dialect of the Inuktut language. 40,000 Inuit in Inuit Nunangat speak the language. 70 percent of Nunavut’s residents also utilize the language.

Microsoft shared the news on February 1st, at the start of Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq. The annual celebration takes place in Nunavut and commemorates the Inuktut language.

Microsoft says it worked with the Government of Nunavut to implement the project, and this announcement builds on that work to help preserve the language for future generations.

Microsoft said community members are looking for more updates to make the program accessible over the long-term.

Users can download Microsoft Translator on iOS, Android, and Office and Translator for Bing. Azure Cognitive Services Translator and Azure Cognitive Services Speech also support Translator.

Spotify expects muted growth for the upcoming quarter owing to the Joe Rogan mess

Spotify closed out the last quarter of 2021 within expectation. The Stockholm, Sweden-based company expected its music streaming service to have 177-181 million paying subscribers, and 400-407 million monthly active users, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The company closed the quarter with 180 million paid subscribers and 406 million monthly active listeners.

According to a recent Music subscriber market shares report from Midia, Spotify takes the top slot of market share with 31 percent. Apple Music sits in second with 15 percent, and Amazon Music is at 13 percent. YouTube Music is at eight percent, and Deezer holds onto just two percent of the market.

While Spotify remains the industry leader, it has lost 2 percent of its market share since 2020. This isn’t likely to make a significant difference in the long run, but it does show that Spotify may face serious competition in the coming years.

Further, the company itself is expecting muted growth of up to 183 million paying subscribers for the coming quarter, owing to the recent Joe Rogan debacle that saw multiple artists, including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, India Arie, Graham Nash, Nils Lofgren, requesting the removal of their music from the streaming service, quoting that the service doesn’t curb COVID-19 misinformation originating from the UFC commentator’s podcast.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek stated during the company’s earnings call that it was “too early to know” how many users would be cancelling their subscriptions because of Joe Rogan. While Rogan “has a massive audience,” he must “abide” by Spotify’s policies, added Ek.

Following the fiasco, Rogan uploaded a video on his Instagram titled “My thoughts on the latest controversy with @spotify.” Check it out below:

Since then, in an effort to smooth out the situation, Spotify has implemented a new tag to help viewers understand that the information within some of the podcasts streamed through the platform may be untrue. Spotify also reworked its platform rules to make it easier to ban content that asserts that COVID, AIDS, or any other life-threatening illness are hoaxes.

A new grocery delivery app offers 10-minute deliveries in Toronto

Toronto residents now have a new option to have their groceries delivered. Ninja Delivery is a startup from Waterloo that was birthed during the height of the pandemic in 2021. Until now, the company operated solely in Waterloo, but now is expanding to cover Toronto.

“We started Ninja to save people their most scarce resource: Time,” reads the company’s release about the expansion. “This inspired us to build a service that feels like magic, and now we want to make it available to as many people as possible,” said Wesley Yue, Co-Founder, and CEO, Ninja Delivery.

What’s special about the delivery service, and what makes it different from the likes of Instacart and UberEats is that Ninja has a pre-determined delivery zone in which it guarantees fast 10-minute deliveries. The service is available every day until 2am, has no minimum order amount and offers free delivery on orders over $9.99.

The delivery service offers a range of items, including fresh produce, meat, animal food and even COVID-19 antigen tests.

While the expansion is a positive for Toronto residents, it’s even better for people looking for a side hustle to make some extra money. The company says it hires local residents and provides fair wages, tips and benefits. A quick look at the company’s website shows that the service promotes the use of electric bikes, and even provides said bikes to its couriers that are paid $17/hr + tips.

The Ninja Delivery app is available to download on iOS and Android. Learn more about the service here.

Complaints regarding Tesla ‘Phantom Braking’ on the rise

Over the past three months, roughly 107 Tesla drivers have reported that their vehicle is making sudden stops — also known as ‘Phantom Braking’ — while driving in autopilot mode.

Phantom Breaking occurs when an autonomous vehicle falsely detects an object on the road or an oncoming vehicle and hits the brakes to avoid a potential collision. While the safety mechanism is useful when in a hazardous situation, it can be especially dangerous if another vehicle is tailgating you.

While the problem isn’t new given there have been reports regarding phantom braking since November, the issue is only now receiving mainstream attention following a Washington Post report, causing a drop in the electric vehicle maker’s shares.

According to the report, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received a surge in complaints lodged by Tesla owners regarding Phantom Braking over the past three months, compared to only 34 complaints in the preceding 22 months.

Many suspect that the problem has become worse since Tesla ditched its radar tech to solely use camera vision to detect nearby objects and other vehicles.

This is the latest in a string of safety issues plaguing Tesla vehicles. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) raised concerns regarding over 53,000 Tesla vehicles being programmed to roll through stop signs,

These vehicles will now receive an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will disable the vehicles from autonomously performing a rolling stop through a stop sign.

In other Tesla-related news, Elon Musk says Canadians can expect Tesla Full-Self Driving Beta to drop in February.
