Elon Musk says self driving Teslas will be on roads and safer than humans in 2022

After years of delays and hype-filled tweets, Elon Musk now claims that Tesla’s full self-driving feature will release in 2022 and that the technology is safer than human drivers.

The exact quote from the most recent Tesla investors call is, “I would be shocked if we do not achieve Full Self-Driving safer than human this year. I would be shocked,” according to a report from Electrek

Tesla has been testing its fell self-driving beta software on public roads for the past several years, but if the current state of the software is any indication of the system’s progress, then Elon is likely hedging his bet here. Electrek notes that around 60,000 cars in the U.S. are in the beta program.

As far as we know, the beta hasn’t officially rolled out in Canada, but it’s reportedly coming soon.

You can now use Nvidia GeForce Now natively on your LG TV

Nvidia’s cloud gaming service, GeForce Now, is available natively on select 2021 LG Smart TVs with the latest webOS and LG TV browser updates.

The new addition means that Nvidia’s GeForce Now is now available on nine platforms, including macOS, Windows, Nvidia Shield, Android, iOS, Android TV and more.

If you have a compatible LG Smart TV, the GeForce Now app should be available for you to download directly from the LG Content Store. Check if you have a compatible LG Smart TV here.

As an introductory offer, Nvidia is offering a free six-month subscription of GeForce Now’s Priority Tier (regularly $64.99) to anyone in the United States who purchases a qualifying LG Smart TV from February 1st to March 27th.

According to Nvidia, the native TV app supports the following peripherals:

  • Nvidia Shield controller connected using Bluetooth
  • All Microsoft Xbox Wireless controllers using Bluetooth or USB
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 connected wireless using a USB adapter or USB
  • Sony PS5 DualSense connected using Bluetooth or USB
  • Sony DualShock 4 connected using Bluetooth or USB
  • Logitech Gamepad F310, F710, and Dual Action USB

For those who have a compatible LG Smart TV and would like to subscribe to LG’s game streaming service, Nvidia offers three membership options.

The first is the free route that will give you standard access to the platform with a one-hour gaming limit per session. Once the hour passes, you can queue again to get another hour of free gaming in, although you may have to wait a while.

Nvidia also offers a paid membership option that gives you priority access to gaming servers without any session length limit. This subscription will cost you $12.99/month or $64.99 for six months.

Lastly, Nvidia recently came out with its new RTX 3080 subscription tier which costs $129.99 for 6 months. The upgraded tier gives access to 1440p gaming at up to 120FPS on a Mac or PC, 4K HDR at 60FPS on Nvidia Shield and up to 120FPS on select Android devices.

B.C’s Connected Coast project lays its first fibre-optic cable marking major milestone

The Connected Coast project marked an important milestone by laying its first 50 kilometres of fibre-optic cable.

The project aims to bring high-speed internet to 139 rural and coastal communities along the B.C coast.

The group achieved the feat on January 28th in Northern B.C. The fibre was laid at shore landings along the communities of Lax Kw’alaams, Metlakatla, and Dodge Cove.

“This is a significant milestone for a project that’s laying the groundwork to bring better connectivity to… remote, rural and Indigenous communities along B.C.’s coast,” Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast, said in a statement.

The next steps are to lay tracks down along Northern communities, including Kitkatla and Oona River, before moving west. The team will eventually move south towards Vancouver Island.

The project is partially managed by CityWest, a telecom company owned by the City of Prince Rupert in B.C. The Strathcona Regional District (SRD), also located in B.C, is the other partner.

The project is estimated to cost $45.4 million. The federal and provincial governments are financing the project.

Once completed, the project will impact 90,000 households and stretch 3,400 kilometres. It’ll be one of the longest coastal subsea networks in the world.

First announced in 2018, the project is currently focusing on network design, consultations, and construction. The project is expected to be completed sometime next year.

Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ rumoured to be delayed until March 11

Samsung might be going through another supply chain issue, according to a well-known leaker with a mixed track record, Jon Prosser.

According to Prosser, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ won’t hit stores until March 11th, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra being the only device landing in stores on February 25th.

Prosser indicates that supply chain issues are the cause of the setbacks. This isn’t the first time that supply chain issues have caused concerns for Samsung.

Previous rumours indicate that the Galaxy S21 FE was poised to launch in August, but due to supply chain issues, the device didn’t release until January.

Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S22 series on February 9th.

Sony’s MLB The Show 22 coming to Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch in April

PlayStation has confirmed that its MLB The Show 22 baseball game is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one when it launches on April 5th.

In addition to the base Xbox Game Pass service for Xbox consoles, MLB The Show 22 will come to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s Cloud Gaming on that date, making it available for streaming on mobile devices and in browsers. Last year’s MLB The Show 21 also launched on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

In case you missed it, the historically PlayStation-exclusive franchise went multi-platform last year following a revised licensing deal with MLB. As part of this new arrangement, MLB The Show 22 will also launch on Nintendo Switch on April 5th, marking the series’ debut on a Nintendo platform. What’s more, cross-play, saves and progression will be supported between PlayStation 4/5, Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch.

All of these announcements came during a reveal event in New York’s Times Square in which Los Angeles Angels player Shohei Ohtani was confirmed to be MLB The Show 22‘s cover athlete.

PlayStation to acquire ‘Destiny’ developer Bungie for $3.6 billion

Sony has announced plans to acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion USD (about $4.6 billion CAD).

Bungie is the studio best known for Xbox’s original Halo games and, in recent years, the Destiny series.

In a press release, Sony confirmed that Bungie will remain “an independent subsidiary” of the company. Current Bungie CEO and chairman Pete Parsons will continue to lead the developer alongside the rest of the studio’s management team. Further, Sony says Bungie will have the option “to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play.”

Adding to that, Parsons said the following of the acquisiton:

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games,” he said. “We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.”

As it stands, Bungie is continuing to support Destiny 2 as well as other Destiny-related projects and new, yet-to-be-revealed IP. While it seems safe to assume that Destiny will remain multiplatform (at least to some capacity), it remains to be seen whether future Bungie titles might become PlayStation exclusive.

The Bungie deal is the latest in a string of high-profile gaming acquisitions. Earlier this month, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive announced plans to purchase Farmville maker Zynga for $12.7 billion USD (about $16.1 billion CAD). At the time, that was believed to be the biggest-ever acquisition of a gaming studio, but that didn’t last long. One week later, Microsoft revealed that it will purchase Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard for a staggering $68.7 billion USD (about $82.7 billion CAD).

BlackBerry selling legacy patents for $600 million

BlackBerry is selling patents primarily relating to mobile, messaging, and wireless networking for $600 million.

Catapult IP Innovations Inc. will be absorbing the assets, a special purpose venture formed to do exactly so.

A statement from BlackBerry says it won’t be selling patents essential to the company’s core operations, and the sale won’t impact customers using any of its products or services.

The move further cements the end of the once-popular Canadian mobile company. The company officially killed its services earlier this month, disabling access to mobile data, phone calls, text messaging, and 9-1-1 functionality.

While the features that made the company famous are now dead, BlackBerry is alive and thriving since turning its attention to the cyber security sector.

The company will receive $450 million in cash when the deal closes and another $150 million on a promissory note. The terms of how exactly the remaining $150 will be paid have not been made public.
