Samsung’s latest S22 series will reportedly release in these four colours

We already know quite a bit about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup through leaks, including the fact that the S22 Ultra will likely feature less RAM than its predecessor.

However, leakers have been relatively quiet about the device’s colours — at least until now. Often-reliable leaker Evan Blass has shared several reported press renders that show the S22 series in its full glory.

Check out the images below:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will reportedly be available in the same ‘Black,’ ‘Dark/Olive Green,’ ‘Pink’ and ‘White’ colourways, while the larger S22 Ultra will offer the same shades and a darker pink variant.

From what we know so far, the Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and work with an S Pen. The other S22 models reportedly lack the S Pen support, sport an S21-like design with three cameras and feature the same Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra.

While Samsung hasn’t officially announced a reveal date for the S22 series, previous leaks have indicated that we might get our first look at the device at Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 8th or 9th.

Fido update schedule indicates Pixel 6 security update will arrive on February 7th

Google’s Pixel December Security Update dropped on December 13th and was swiftly removed due to an issue related to dropped calls and disconnections.

The update — along with the January update — was then redistributed on January 14th and seems to have caused no issues. While the January update rolled out for the Pixel 3a to Pixel 5a devices on time, due to the December update lagging behind, Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users had to wait a little longer.

Well, the backlog has now been cleared and according to 9to5GoogleGoogle’s latest flagships can now expect to receive the February update on the same day as other Pixel devices.

The information was also revealed in Fido’s community page where a community manager shared an “OS Upgrade Schedule” that shows that the Pixel 6/6 Pro will receive the February update on Monday, February 7th on the same day as the rest of the Pixel lineup.

Since Fido is a Canadian carrier, it’s likely that the update will arrive on February 7th across all carriers. That said, the date might be different for the rest of the world.

Nvidia reportedly preparing to wind down Arm acquisition

Nvidia reportedly plans to abandon plans to purchase Arm, the SoftBank-owned company behind the ARM chip designs used in a variety of popular tech, like smartphones.

Nvidia announced plans to purchase Arm back in 2020 for a whopping $40 billion USD (about $50.6 billion CAD). However, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, Nvidia is quietly preparing to abandon the acquisition after failing to win approval for the deal.

Bloomberg reports that Nvidia told partners it doesn’t expect to close the transaction. Meanwhile, SoftBank reportedly plans to prepare for an Arm initial public offering (IPO) as an alternative to the Nvidia takeover.

The acquisition has faced stiff resistance so far, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) suing to stop the transaction in December. The core argument against Nvidia purchasing Arm is that it would make the company too powerful with control over Arm’s designs.

Despite the reports, both Nvidia and Arm continue to plead with regulators. Moreover, Bloomberg notes that leadership from both Nvidia and Softbank still publicly support the deal, effectively saying let’s wait and see what happens.

Bloomberg goes on to detail that Nvidia has an uphill battle to close the deal, taking on both U.S. and Chinese regulators, rival tech companies and more. Plus, analysts told the publication that if the deal falls through, Nvidia will “probably be fine.” The deal ultimately would have helped Nvidia push into data centre chips, but the company’s already pushing into that sector and will likely continue that push, with or without Arm.

Canadian government investigating cyberattack on Global Affairs

Several federal departments and agencies are working together in response to a recent cyberattack on systems at Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

According to a CBC News report, the government said the “cyber incident” took place on January 19th, but was limited to GAC. Further, the government said there was no indication that other government departments were impacted.

“This investigation is ongoing. We are unable to comment further on any specific details for operational reasons,” read a government statement.

The statement goes on the specify that the Treasury Board Secretariat, Office of the Chief Information Officer, Shared Services Canada, the Communications Security Establishment and its Canadian Centre for Cyber Security are working to respond to the incident.

Although the federal government didn’t say which GAC systems were targeted or whether any damage was done, it did confirm the systems haven’t returned to normal use. Moreover, the government said that critical services are current;y functioning but that some “internet-based services are not currently available” due to mitigation measures.

The government didn’t say where the attack originated from or who might be responsible. Worse, a government source told CBC News that it may be days before a source can be identified due to the complexity of the attack. CBC News also notes that internal emails show Canadian missions abroad experienced electronic communications issues.

Finally, CBC News noted that the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security put out a bulletin warning of potential cyber threats, “including by Russian-backed actors to target Canadian critical infrastructure network operators, their operational and information technology.” The publication goes on to indicate the possibility of Russian cyberattacks related to rising tensions over Ukraine.

Rogers to construct six cell towers on Highway 4 in British Columbia

Rogers is constructing six new cell towers along Highway 4 in B.C. to improve connectivity in the area.

The towers will be constructed between Port Alberni and Tofino. Two existing towers will also be upgraded. The construction will provide 85kms of coverage to several communities along Vancouver Island.

“Highway 4 is a vital route, and this project will provide… new service and resolve spotty coverage, improving safety and reliable connectivity as soon as possible for all who depend on it for commercial transportation, tourism and travelling to and from their homes,” Jorge Fernandes, the company’s chief technology officer, said in a statement.

This isn’t the first time the telecom giant announced it was expanding services in the province. Expansion projects along Highways 14, 95, and 97 are also being completed through the Connecting British Columbia program. This has seen the telecom company partner with B.C’s government to make network investments in the province.

Seven towers are being built along Highway 14, with construction expected to be completed this year. The company is also constructing towers across Highway 16 along the area known as the Highway of Tears.

In a statement, Rogers notes the Highway 4 expansion is fully funded by the company alone.

Twitter is working on ‘Flock,’ it’s version of ‘Close Friends’

Twitter is taking a page from Instagram’s book and introducing a feature similar to ‘Close Friends,’ as reported by InputMag.

Twitter’s new close friends feature, currently called ‘Flock,’ will allow you to publish a tweet that is only visible to a specific number of pre-selected people, 150 at max.

The feature, which was first teased in July 2021, saw Twitter call the feature “Trusted Friends,” though Flock surely has a better ring to it, and forms a clear distinction between Twitter and Instagram’s similarly-working features.

According to Input, since last July, mobile developer Alessandro Paluzz has been keeping a keen eye on the development of Flock and has found code alluding to the feature still being in development.

He also adds that the maximum number of people you can add to your Flock list is 150, and if you remove someone from the list, they won’t be notified about it. If you’re in a Flock, the notification you’ll receive will read, “You can see this Tweet because the author has added you to their Twitter Flock.”

While Twitter hasn’t revealed any other information about the in-development feature, it is likely that it will be exclusive to Twitter Blue users, similar to how the San Francisco, California-based platform rolled out NFT authentication and NFT profile picture support for paid users.

Beanfield Metroconnect merges with FibreStream to expand network in residential communities

Beanfield Metroconnect has acquired internet service provider FibreStream to expand network availability to more Canadians.

Beanfield owns the largest independent fibre-optic network in Toronto and Montreal. It builds and operates its own network to ensure it’s delivering the fastest response times and reliability.

Beanfield will work to offer its network to FibreStream customers, which serves the GTA, Ottawa, and Vancouver.

“We believe that coming together with FibreStream is an important milestone in our continued focus on building the network of the future,” Dan Armstrong, CEO of Beanfield, said in a statement. “This further strengthens our position to offer our customers with reliable high-speed connectivity as Canadians continue to work remotely and can benefit from the quality of service that both of our customer bases have come to expect.”

The acquisition will not result in any changes to plans and pricing for customers on FibreStream’s existing network. FibreStream CEO, Jason Cowan, will take on a new role at Beanfield, serving as vice president of residential.
