Beanfield Metroconnect merges with FibreStream to expand network in residential communities

Beanfield Metroconnect has acquired internet service provider FibreStream to expand network availability to more Canadians.

Beanfield owns the largest independent fibre-optic network in Toronto and Montreal. It builds and operates its own network to ensure it’s delivering the fastest response times and reliability.

Beanfield will work to offer its network to FibreStream customers, which serves the GTA, Ottawa, and Vancouver.

“We believe that coming together with FibreStream is an important milestone in our continued focus on building the network of the future,” Dan Armstrong, CEO of Beanfield, said in a statement. “This further strengthens our position to offer our customers with reliable high-speed connectivity as Canadians continue to work remotely and can benefit from the quality of service that both of our customer bases have come to expect.”

The acquisition will not result in any changes to plans and pricing for customers on FibreStream’s existing network. FibreStream CEO, Jason Cowan, will take on a new role at Beanfield, serving as vice president of residential.

Original Surface Duo finally gets promised Android 11 update

Earlier this month, Microsoft said the original Surface Duo’s long-awaited Android 11 update would arrive in a “few weeks.” Well, that time has passed and, thankfully the update is (finally) rolling out.

As spotted by 9to5Google, a Microsoft support page for the update notes that it’s rolling out to unlocked Duos in North America and Europe. That includes Canada — I was able to start downloading the update on my Duo. Those with locked or unlocked AT&T Surface Duos, however, will need to wait a little longer.

The support page also lists the new features included with the update, which clocks in at a whopping 2.38GB. There are a ton, so we picked out some of the highlights. For the full list, click here.

  • Updated to Android 11 and Android Security Bulletin – January 2022.
  • New options for answering phone calls when device is folded.
  • New options for setting apps to automatically open across both screens.
  • Updated app drawer and folder design with improved drag-and-drop support.
  • New dual-screen experience for viewing and editing photos in OneDrive.
  • Xbox Game Pass: play games from the cloud with an on-screen controller.

With the update, the original Duo should now be on par with the Duo 2, at least in terms of software. Now, the wait for Android 12 begins, both for the Duo and Duo 2.

However, previous reports indicated that Microsoft planned to skip Android 12 and go straight to Android 12L. Google’s testing the Android 12L update now — it’s set to bring several improvements for devices with large screens or even multiple screens, like the Duo line.

Tesla testing out ‘standard horn’ after users complain about ‘button horn’

Tesla is working to remedy its latest boneheaded design move by adding a standard airbag horn to the centre of the new yoke steering wheel.

When the automaker released the new yoke wheel with the refreshed Model S/X vehicles last year, it came with a simple button layout for traditional car controls for singling left and right plus the horn. While some users liked how streamlined this made the cars look, it likely takes some getting used to.

Now Tesla appears to be testing out a standard horn, suggesting that drivers aren’t fond of the streamlined look.

This all comes from a leaked image of a yoke with a standard horn labelled “Airbag horn enabled in SW-352573.”

It’s unclear if this horn design will make its way to production, but I’d suspect it will given people are likely annoyed with the button.

Multiple U.S. states sue Google over alleged Android location tracking

Google has been sued again, this time around by attorneys general from three U.S. states and the District of Columbia (D.C.). The lawsuit alleges that Google deceptively collected location data on Android.

The Verge notes that the complaints build on a 2020 lawsuit filed by Arizona’s attorney general. The suit alleges that Google employed a “complex web” of settings that made it difficult to tell if users were sharing their location at a given moment. Moreover, the suit accuses Google of pushing Android users to share location data with “repeated nudging, misleading pressure tactics, and evasive and deceptive descriptions.”

In a statement, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine accused Google of falsely leading “consumers to believe that changing their account and device settings would allow customers to protect their privacy.”

Racine filed the lawsuit on January 24th alongside suits from attorneys general from Washington, Texas, and Indiana.

Google denied the claims, telling The Verge that “The attorneys general are bringing a case based on inaccurate claims and outdated assertions about our settings. We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data.”

It’s worth noting that many of the issues raised in the D.C. lawsuit pull from a 2018 story from the Associated Press that found many of Google’s apps on iOS and Android stored location data even if users enabled privacy settings that claimed to disable location data.

YouTuber makes Grand Theft Auto V playable on original Game Boy

Grand Theft Auto V is renowned for having a sprawling Los Angeles-inspired sandbox to play around in, so naturally, someone wanted to try to squeeze all of that onto a Game Boy.

Enter Sebastian Staacks, who runs a YouTube channel called “there oughta be.” In this case, he figured: “there oughta be GTA [V] for the Game Boy.”

And sure enough, he managed to pull it off. As Staacks explains in a YouTube video, he built a custom Game Boy cartridge using a wireless ESP8266 microchip and custom PCB. This gave the Game Boy streaming functionality and, through that, made GTA V playable on the system.

Of course, “playable” is a bit debatable here as the game is extremely difficult to make out on the Game Boy’s all-green, low-quality screen. The limited buttons certainly don’t help, either. Still, it’s impressive to see it even running at all on the retro handheld.

What’s more, Staacks has made the project open-source and posted instructions explaining his work so others can try a hand at it. You can read more on that here.
