‘Turning Red’ to skip theatre premiere in favour of Disney+ release

Turning Red will debut exclusively on Disney+ on March 11th.

The new feature-length film is full of Canadian connections. Chinese-born and Toronto-raised writer and director Domee Shi is the brains behind the operation. Shi previously won an Oscar for her 2018 animated short Bao.

Turning Red is based in Toronto and follows teenager Meilin (played by Rosalie Chiang) who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited. She’s constantly followed around by her mother (played by Sandra Oh).

The CN Tower and Toronto’s famous Chinatown are some of the famous landmarks revealed in the trailer.

Turning Red is the third Pixar film to debut on the streaming service instead of opening in theaters, according to Fandango editor Erik Davis.

A Disney+ membership costs $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year.

Amazon reveals ‘The Boys’ season 3 premieres on June 3rd

Amazon has confirmed that the third season of The Boys will stream on Amazon Prime Video on June 3rd, with new episodes releasing every Friday.

Based on the brief snippet shown during Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman, a meta tie-in TV show related to The Boys, Season 3 seems set to continue to follow the dysfunctional corporate-run conglomerate that is the Seven. Towards the end of the clip, Homelander (Antony Starr) and Starlight (Erin Moriarty) seem to be struggling to keep up their typically sunny dispositions.

As far as superhero-related TV shows/movies go, The Boys is one of the few that really appeals to me. I’ve always found it difficult to engage in most Marvel/DC television shows and movies because from my perspective, they often don’t feel like they’re grounded in reality. The Boys, however, totally is in several ways that I won’t go into due to spoilers.

Take it from someone who often decries that they “hate superhero stuff,” The Boys is worth watching.

The first two seasons of The Boys are available to stream on Prime Video.

An Amazon Prime Video subscription is included at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $79/year.

Update kills heating in some Tesla vehicles during cold Canadian winter

A new software update has reportedly wreaked havoc on several Tesla owners’ vehicles in the Canadian prairies as temperatures drop and some of the EVs’ heat pumps have failed.

The update rolled out in the middle of December for both the Model Y and the Model 3, Tesla’s more popular vehicles. However, since then, CTV News has received multiple reports of drivers with no in-cabin heating in the vehicles.

Diving deeper, it appears this may be a wider Tesla issue as many users have shared stories of a wide variety of components related to heating failing far further back than mid-December.

Tesla North states that last year, Tesla replaced sensors related to heating on all vehicles after encountering bugs. It’s difficult to tell if the users in the prairies are driving outdated cars or if a new software update has added additional heating system issues.

One driver was even caught out on a drive in -40 degree weather with young children in the car when the heat cut out.

According to CTV News, a representative of a Tesla Owners Club in Alberta says that they’ve been told Tesla is aware of the issue and it’s been “sent up the chain.”

Hopefully, a software update will solve this problem, or perhaps Tesla will need to update its hardware to perform better in low temperatures.

Overall, this isn’t reassuring Canadians considering buying an electric vehicle (EV). The only EV I’ve been able to test under winter conditions has been a few Porsche Taycans models. In both instances, I didn’t encounter issues related to in-car heating, but I did find that took onger to top up the vehicle and that the battery doesn’t last as long when the temperatures are colder.

Scream to release on January 14th in Canadian theatres that are open

Scream (also known as 5cream) will only play in theatres in certain parts of Canada.

According to a tweet from Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail’s deputy arts editor/film editor, the anticipated horror movie will premiere on January 14th in Canadian theatres that are currently open.

This means that moviegoers in Ontario and Quebec will be out of luck as both provinces’ theatres are entirely closed amid the ongoing COVID-19 Omnicron variant surge.

Further, according to Hertz, the film will not receive an early premium video on demand release (PVOD) on platforms like iTunes and Google Play in these specific regions but will play in Ontario/Quebec when theatres re-open.

Cineplex recently announced that it has temporarily laid off nearly 5,000 part-time employees in Ontario due to the province’s mandated closure of theatres.

Scream takes place 25 years after a streak of murders occurred in the town of Woodsboro, California, with a new killer donning the Ghostface mask and targeting a group of teenagers.

Mario Kart 9 is reportedly in “active development”

It looks like Mario Kart 9 could be currently in the works.

According to Tokyo-based industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto (via Gamesindustry.biz), the long-awaited successor to Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is currently in “active development.”

“I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development,” said Toto in a feature focused on game industry predictions for 2022.

Toto goes on to say that Mario Kart 9 will feature a “new twist” of some sort, which has been a franchise mainstay for years. For example, Double Dash on the Game Cube features two-character karts and Mario Kart 8 offers anti-gravity portions of tracks. It’s unclear what Mario Kart 9’s main draw could be. Interestingly, the report doesn’t mention if Mario Kart 9 is coming to the Switch or if the game’s release is targeted at the console’s successor.

In the same report, Toto went on to state that Nintendo also has plans to bring another one of its core franchises to smartphones.

Across Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the game has sold more that 40 million units and is widely regarded as the best entry in the series. What blows my mind the most is that Mario Kart 8 was first released on the Wii U roughly seven and a half years ago. With this span of time between Mario Kart releases in mind, it’s unsurprising that another title in the franchise is reportedly in the works.

Apple pads out Fitness+ with new Time to Run classes

The war for the best at-home fitness program is still going strong, and in an effort to revamp its platform for 2022, Apple is launching a host of new features for runners.

This new workout program, ‘Time to Run,’ functions similarly to last year’s ‘Time to Walk.’ This means you need to have an Apple Watch, an Apple Fitness+ subscription and Bluetooth earbuds to take advantage of the functionality.

The fundamental difference between Time to Walk and Time to Run is that the new running classes are led by Apple Fitness+ trainers instead of notable people and celebrities telling stories. Time to Run also has a doubles-down on music to help keep the runner’s focus and intensity. Apple says that the musical themes are based on the city where your trainer is running in. For example, Apple’s press release mentions that the run taking place on Miami Beach uses Latin-inspired music.

Much like the Time to Walk episodes, the leaders of the Time to Run classes will also share photos of notable sites along their route. Apple says you can even save these photos to your camera roll if you want to go back and look at them later.

Time to Run is launching with three running classes, including Brooklyn, Miami, and London, with a new episode dropping every week. If you’re using a wheelchair, Time to Run also becomes Time to Push, which is a welcome accessibility move on Apple’s part.

Other Apple Fitness+ announcements

Alongside Time to Run, Apple is launching the third season of Time to Walk with key guests like comedian Hasan Minhaj, Law and Order superstar Chris Meloni and more.

Finally, in the Fitness section of the app, users will notice more workout classes based on music from popular artists like Ed Sheeran and more challenges like a new 30-day core workout challenge.
