Adobe Lightroom adds RAW support for Pixel 6, 6 Pro and other phones

Adobe recently added official support for RAW images from several phones, including Google’s new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

9to5Google spotted the change in a help page for Adobe’s ‘Camera Raw’ extension, which handles the processing of RAW images for many Adobe services (like Lightroom and Photoshop). The extension’s December update, or version 14.1, expands RAW support to several devices, including:

  • Google Pixel 6
  • Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini

It’s worth noting that Adobe lists RAW support on a per-camera basis. For example, the Galaxy S21 Ultra received RAW support for its telephoto and “super” telephoto cameras, while both iPhones got support for the ultrawide cameras (Camera Raw already supported both phones’ main cameras).

With the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Adobe added support for all the cameras, including the selfie camera, main rear camera, the ultrawide camera and the 6 Pro’s telephoto camera.

Official RAW support should make it easier to edit RAW photos captured with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. One of the main benefits of the RAW format is that it captures more data from the camera sensor, which gives editors more room to play with when they bring the image into a program like Adobe’s Camera Raw.

If you haven’t used RAW images on your Pixel before, here’s how to turn them on: Open the camera > Tap the gear icon in the top-left corner > More settings > Advanced > Turn on RAW+JPEG control. Now if you go back to the camera and tap the gear icon again, there should be an option to toggle capturing just a JPEG file or a RAW and JPEG file.

You can find a full list of devices supported by Camera Raw here.

Google Canada offers training to Indigenous job seekers in tech field

Google Canada has announced funding to train Indigenous people looking for jobs with digital skills.

The company is committing $600,000 towards the initiative. $500,000 will go towards the Recording Futures IT training program by ComIT, an initiative created last year.

The charity links struggling job seekers with companies looking for IT professionals by offering programs that teach tech skills. The funds from Google created the Recording Futures program that specifically focuses on teaching IT skills to Indigenous learners. Covered topics include HTML, CSS, and other coding applications.

$100,000 will go towards Indspire, a charity that focuses on the education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in Canada. The money will specifically be used towards job and training programs, and scholarships to be used towards courses offered by Google.

“The social and economic hardships felt by many during this pandemic have brought some heavy truths to the surface and we now have an opportunity to build back a more inclusive and resilient economy,” Sabrina Geremia, vice president of Google Canada, said in a statement.

“We’re proud to support ComIT and Indspire to deepen our commitment in digital skills training in high-demand fields, create opportunities for Indigenous job seekers entering the tech workforce and increase Indigenous representation in our technology workforce.”

You can now develop iPad and iPhone apps directly from your iPad Swift Playground 4

Apple’s Swift Playgrounds 4, which was announced back at WWDC in June, has finally made its way to iPads soon after the release of iPadOS 15.2.

For those not familiar, Swift Playgrounds is an app that helps you learn to code and develop apps for iOS and iPadOS. Today’s update brings the application directly to your iPad, allowing you to review your projects in real-time. The update also brings App Store Connect integration, which lets you upload your apps straight to the App Store when you’re finished.

It’s worth noting that the app you upload is not guaranteed to make it out in the public App Store. Apple will review your application, and if it passes the review process, only then it will be available to the world.

To use Swift Playgrounds 4, you need to be running the latest iPadOS 15.2. The app is available to download directly from the App Store for free.

The new app is sure to help lower the entry barrier for developers and bring a range of fresh minds in to submit their projects.

Find below the full App Store release notes of Swift Playgrounds 4:

  • Build iPhone and iPad apps with SwiftUI right on your iPad (requires iPadOS 15.2 or later)
  • App Store Connect integration lets you upload your finished app to the App Store
  • App Preview shows live updates as you make changes to your app
  • Full-screen preview lets you see your app edge-to-edge
  • Smart, inline code suggestions help you write code quickly and accurately
  • App Projects make it easy to move projects to Xcode and back
  • Project-wide search finds results across multiple files
  • Snippets Library provides hundreds of SwiftUI controls, symbols, and colors
  • Swift Package support lets you include publicly-available code to enhance your apps

The Lord of the Rings film series turns 20, but it’s not on any Canadian streaming service

On December 19th, 2001, Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring opened in North American theatres.

The fantasy flick, of course, was a critical and commercial smash hit that spawned two equally beloved sequels, 2002’s The Two Towers and 2003’s The Return of the King. The decidedly less popular Jackson-helmed The Hobbit trilogy came nearly 10 years later.

Given the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, it would make sense if you wanted to revisit the original trilogy. I definitely thought of it — it’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve seen them. Unfortunately, though, it’s not that simple.

As it stands, none of the original three LOTR films are on a Canadian streaming service. While they were once on Netflix Canada, they aren’t anymore. The only digital services that have the films are premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes and Google Play. It’s worth noting, however, that the digital collection of the Extended Editions of the trilogy currently cost $25.99 (Google Play) and $19.99 (iTunes) to purchase.

It’s odd that the LOTR series isn’t streaming on any service in Canada, especially with the 20th anniversary. By contrast, fellow Warner Bros. series Harry Potter — which also is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year — recently came to Crave. While it’s likely that licensing agreements are preventing the LOTR series from hitting any Canadian streaming service, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a bit of a bummer for consumers.

It’s worth noting that The Hobbit trilogy is actually available on Canadian streaming services — well, mostly. 2012’s An Unexpected Journey is on both Crave and Amazon Prime Video, as is 2013’s The Desolation of Smaug (Crave/Amazon Prime Video). However, 2014’s The Battle of the Five Armies is only on CBC’s ICI Tou.TV. Otherwise, they’re all offered on PVOD platforms like Google Play and iTunes.

Hopefully, the LOTR series will come to a service soon. For now, though, I’ll likely just buy the digital Extended Edition trilogy collection while it’s on sale.

Spider-Man ticket holders waiting for updates from Cineplex amid Ontario’s new COVID-19 restrictions

Ontario is introducing new public health measures following an uptick in COVID-19 infections boosted by the Omicron variant.

The Ontario government has announced that it is reinstating capacity limits for some indoor venues, including casinos, movie theatres and entertainment or sports venues.

The new rules will go into effect on Saturday at 12:01am ET and will see venues with an indoor capacity of more than 1,000 people reduced by 50 percent.

“This measure is being taken to reduce opportunities for close contact in high-risk indoor settings with large crowds and when masks are not always worn,” a news release from the province said.

With this year’s arguably most anticipated movie Spider-Man: No Way Home releasing on Friday, it’s unclear how these new rules will affect the film’s launch. Cineplex says it’s still reviewing the government’s guidelines.

“For guests with advance tickets, we ask them to keep an eye on their email accounts in the coming days for updates and next steps,” reads Cineplex’s recent Tweet.

These new provincial capacity guidelines come alongside Ontario expanding third dose eligibility to individuals that are 18+ and double-vaxed as of Monday, December 20th.

iOS 15.2 lets you reset a locked iPhone or iPad without connecting to a Mac

iOS 15.2, Apple’s latest mobile OS update, includes the ability to erase and reset a locked iPhone or iPad without connecting the device to a Mac or PC.

This feature is available if you fail to enter the correct passcode for your iPhone or iPad after several attempts. Your device also needs to be connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network to launch the resetting process.

Prior to this update, you needed to reset your locked iPhone and iPad by connecting to a Mac or PC. The ability to reset your iPhone or iPad without connecting to a Mac/PC aims to make the resetting process more straightforward and accessible for people who don’t have immediate access to a laptop/computer.

This also won’t inadvertently make it easier to unlock a stolen iPhone or iPad because it still requires users to enter their Apple ID to complete the reset process.

Here’s how it works:

After several failed password attempts, you’ll see an ‘Erase iPhone’ option appear at the bottom of your screen. Once you tap on that option, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID and password to deregister your account.

After that, the iPhone/iPad will reset. For more on this feature, check out Apple’s support page.

Leaked Huawei P50 Pocket render shows off foldable smartphone’s rear

Huawei is planning to unveil a new foldable smartphone on December 23rd, and it looks like renders of the device have surfaced online.

The foldable, Huawei’s P50 Pocket, offers a clamshell design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The four renders are nearly the same and showcase different widgets available on the phone’s cover display. The widgets include one for music, one for calls and a couple of others. Below the cover display, the phone houses its three rear-facing cameras.

The P50 Pocket is expected to use a metal and glass backing, but it’s unclear from the photos.

While the phone will likely launch globally, we probably won’t see it release in Canada as it will lack Google Play Services and will feature Huawei’s EMUI.

The P50 Pocket’s other specs are currently unknown, but the phone is likely offers high-end specs to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, though it will likely still be inferior to Huawei’s Mate X2 foldable.
