Twitter begins rolling out auto-captions for new videos

In a bid to make its platform more accessible, Twitter has announced that it’s rolling out auto-generated captions for videos uploaded to the micro-blogging platform.

Available in over 30 languages, including English, Spanish, HindiChinese, Arabic and more, auto-captions are rolling out for Twitter on the web, iOS and Android.

What’s worth noting is that the captions won’t be generated for videos already uploaded to the platform, and are exclusive to new videos only. Additionally, unlike Tik Tok, whatever captions the AI generates would be permanent and you won’t be able to edit the captions if you find any discrepancies.

As mentioned in the Tweet above, Twitter’s Android and iOS mobile apps will show captions by default on muted videos, but on the website, you’ll have to use the “CC” button to enable/disable captions.

This comes soon after Twitter announced that it’s testing a new Tik-Tok-style vertical feed that will help users “discover the best content that’s trending.”

Google Pixel Watch watch faces leak online via APK deep dive

More leaks regarding Google’s often-rumoured Pixel Watch have started to appear over the last few weeks.

Last week, reports of the minimalist design and rumoured 2022 release date surfaced, and now, leaked images of the Pixel Watch’s various faces have appeared.

9to5Google took a deep look into Wear OS 3’s emulator files and uncovered a video of 10 watch faces it believes are tied to the rumoured Pixel Watch.

One of the watch faces showcases the Fitbit logo, suggesting there will be at least some level of Fitbit integration with Google’s smartwatch.

What’s also notable is that two of the watch faces were seen in Front Page Tech‘s previous Pixel Watch leak, suggesting there’s at least some level of legitimacy to this leak.

The several watch faces showcase a digital clock and a few complications such as weather, heartbeat and steps.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are also a few digital watch faces and a pair that I would describe as artsy. For example, there’s a sun featured in two of these watch faces that’s located in different positions in the sky. It’s likely that this sun moves throughout the day.

There are several analogue watch faces as well. For example, one showcases the heartbeat rate, and another offers calories burned, weather, Google Calendar and heartbeat.

The one that’s by far the most interesting is that aforementioned Fitbit watch face that features a Fitbit icon, stairs climbed and calories burned, alongside what looks like how many minutes you’ve spent running.

With all of these recent Pixel Watch leaks in mind, it seems like the wearable is almost certainly in the works at Google. However, it’s still unclear if the smartwatch will be revealed alongside its Pixel smartphones in the fall or at Google I/O in May.

The gaming monitor that looks as good as the games it displays

I consider myself a minimalist. I prefer to have as few items in my home as possible. And the same goes for my desk. If I could get away with having just a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, I would. But that’s not possible.

Or is it?

The Huawei MateView GT monitor is about to change the game with its impressive slate of features:

  • 34-inch curved display
  • 3440×1440 ultrawide resolution
  • 165Hz refresh rate
  • 4000:1 contrast ratio
  • Built-in soundbar
  • Microphones with noise-cancelling functionality

The immersion conversion

This is a gaming monitor that offers cinematic-quality visuals and audio in a single piece of hardware.

Anyone who has used an ultrawide display can back me up when I say it provides the most immersive experience for PC gaming. And the Mateview GT’s 21:9 curved display brings you even deeper into the action.

Huawei MateView GT monitor

I’m about to throw out a few numbers, which will mean a lot to monitor enthusiasts, but very little to everyone else. Stick with me. The monitor features a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a 90% DCI-P3 wide colour gamut.

A wide colour gamut and dynamic range mean that you’re getting more contrast between the brightest and darkest points. The VA panel displays deep shadows and bright highlights with ease.

Add the fact that the monitor can display more than 1 billion colours, and you’ve got one of the most striking displays on the market. I wouldn’t recommend adjusting your brightness high enough to warrant this term, but the visuals on the MateView are eye-popping.

You don’t need to conform to perform

What would a gaming monitor be without wicked fast performance?

The MateView GT has a refresh rate of 165Hz. If your PC can handle it, you’ll be running games at 3440×1440 resolution at 165 frames per second. I personally can’t notice the difference above 90, but to describe that performance as buttery smooth would be an understatement.

1440p is currently the sweet spot for high-end gaming. The introduction of ray tracing has led to improvements in lighting, but it has also made games far more demanding. A monitor that can deliver 165Hz performance in an ultrawide resolution is nearly unheard of.

Oh, and don’t forget that it also features AMD Freesync technology to eliminate screen tearing.

Huawei MateView GT monitor

And that’s just where the MateView GT’s innovations begin.

The MateView GT is designed with a built-in soundbar and microphones with noise-cancelling functionality. This all-in-one design is the first of its kind. Monitors that have built-in speakers usually offer the cheapest drivers possible. They’re designed to have external speakers plugged into them. At best, they’ll have small, front-facing speakers that put out tinny sounding audio.

Huawei’s monitor was designed from its inception to provide an engaging auditory experience.

The light of my life

If the dual-driver stereo soundbar isn’t enough to impress, the RGB lighting might be. The multi-colour FX LED light has eight different lighting modes that are intelligently matched to the audio being delivered.

And all of this is beautifully incorporated into the monitor’s stand. I can’t be the only one who appreciates a good monitor stand, right?

Huawei MateView GT stand

The integrated audio design means that you won’t have cables to manage. In fact, the soundbar elegantly hides the base of the monitor stand.

It also hides two microphones for incoming audio. These far-field dual microphones feature intelligent noise cancellation to keep your voice clear at all times. You’ll not only hear the game; you’ll be able to communicate with your team without a distracting mic in your face.

Built for gaming

If it wasn’t clear already, the MateView GT is an excellent gaming monitor. The designers at Huawei have taken the time to understand the needs of players, going so far as to add optional on-screen crosshairs. It’s touches like these that separate a good monitor from a great one. And the MateView GT is a great monitor.

Most people don’t need a monitor that has 4K resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. Honestly, your computer probably can’t handle it. The MateView GT finds the sweet spot at 3440×1440, delivering excellent performance that your PC can actually output.

And I haven’t even mentioned the best part: the price.

The Huawei MateView GT can be bought for $749 at Canadian tech retailers.

If you’re ready to take on your fellow Spartans this holiday season, the MateView GT should be at the top of your list for PC purchases.

Give the gift of time with the season’s most surprising smartwatch

If smartwatches aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Huawei, that could quickly change with the release of the Watch 3 Pro.

I had the chance to go hands-on with the Huawei Band 6 earlier this year, and I came away highly impressed. Now Huawei is back with the Watch 3 Pro, cementing its place as a leader in the smartwatch market.

Where the Band 6 offered performance on a budget, the Watch 3 Pro provides a premium experience that’s throwing down the gauntlet for the smartwatch crown.

Passion for design

Where most smartwatches miss the mark is replicating the experience of using a traditional watch. They may display the time, but the battery life and design are lacking.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Watch 3 Pro is the striking titanium case. Unlike the smartwatches from most companies that have adopted a rounded body, Huawei has opted to go with a classic watch design.

Huawei Watch 3 Pro

The Watch 3 Pro features a physical crown on the side of its case that feels just like a traditional timepiece. It’s a well-considered blend of digital and mechanical design that’s perfect for a professional setting.

It comes with 30 beautifully designed watch faces pre-installed to match any outfit. Or if you’re looking for something even more personalized, there are more than 1000 watch faces available for download.

I’ve never been a fan of the smartwatch designs that dominate the market, so having an option that fits in with my existing timepieces is a welcome change. And with metal and leather bands available, the Watch 3 Pro is the perfect complement for any outfit.

Make time last longer

A beautiful wristwatch is only useful if it can tell the time, something that many companies don’t seem to put much thought into. The amount of times I’ve left the house only to wind up with a dead smartwatch is staggering.

Huawei is here to change that. The Watch 3 Pro is built to help you keep track of your wellbeing, not the time until you’re wearing a blank screen on your wrist. With seven days of battery life on a single charge during heavy use—or up to three weeks in ultra-long battery mode—you won’t have to decide between tracking your sleep or going a full day without your watch.

This extra time before charging also means you’ll be able to track more habits and exercises, something that the Watch 3 Pro excels at.

Stay on track

While the Watch 3 Pro offers the look and feel of a traditional timepiece, it offers best-in-class exercise and health tracking data.

I didn’t know that I wanted to know my temperature at a glance, but having the option to detect my skin temperature at any time is surprisingly reassuring. Pair that with SpO2 monitoring, fitness tracking, sleep and heart-rate monitoring, and you have one of the most fully featured smartwatches on the market.

On top of the software, Huawei has upgraded the Watch 3 Pro with premium sapphire glass, allowing for better light penetration, lower power performance, and a more comfortable fit. So if you’re looking to improve your health in the coming year, the Watch 3 Pro offers every feature you could want and more.

Stay on task

The professional design of the Watch 3 Pro extends beyond its good looks. Huawei has added a plethora of features to assist the everyday professional.

Huawei Watch 3 Pro

I use a lot of task tracking in my everyday life, so having the ability to quickly swipe an item off of my list from my watch is a major time saver. And for anyone who needs to stay up to date with their work, the Watch 3 Pro can receive notifications from your email, calendar, and social media.

Even better, since the Watch 3 Pro runs on the next-generation HarmonyOS, you can download a bevy of third-party productivity apps through the Huawei AppGallery, like the Canadian Easy Voice recorder app, which I’ve found indispensable.

And if you struggle with taking selfies like I do—I swear my eyelids can sense when I’m pressing the button—the Watch 3 Pro can help you to get the perfect shot. The remote shutter feature allows you to preview, zoom, and take the photo directly from your smartwatch.

Time for an upgrade

Let’s be honest, all smartwatches in 2021 feature great fitness tracking. What the Watch 3 Pro offers is a superior user experience.

If you’re considering a smartwatch, you don’t need to settle for rubber bands. Between the gorgeous design and the exceptional features, the Watch 3 Pro is a statement piece that’s worth your attention this holiday season.

Check out Huawei’s website to find out more about how to get your hands on the Watch 3 Pro.

This custom iPhone 13 sports the 2007 iPhone’s motherboard etched on its back

Custom iPhone maker Caviar has released a new Phone 13 Pro series device that includes parts from the original 2007 iPhone.

Designed to pay homage to late Apple founder Steve Jobs, the custom iPhone has Jobs’ signature laser-etched to the lower case of the device, which is made of titanium.

Titled the iPhone 2G, the device is technically an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, with all the features of the current-gen device but has a portion of the original 2007 iPhone’s motherboard embedded in the rear Apple logo.

Check out the image below for reference:

The smartphone’s rear cover also features the device’s internal components etched together, with lines connecting all the components and flowing directly into the central motherboard.

“They are striving towards the center of the world — the Apple logo — like a circulatory system pushing blood towards a pulsating heart,” reads Caviar’s iPhone 2G description.

The custom device is available in iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models, with the former’s price starting at $6,990 USD ($9,023 CAD) and the latter capping at $8,610 USD ($11,114 CAD).

It’s also worth noting is that Caviar is only making 19 of these custom iPhones, so if you’re someone who is passionate about the fully functioning collectible and has a ton of cash to burn, you should act fast.

Google might bring ‘Face Unlock’ to the Pixel 6 Pro

‘Face Unlock’ might be heading to the Pixel 6 Pro, Google’s latest flagship smartphone.

According to 9to5Google’s digging into the Android 12L beta for Pixel devices, Google is looking to bring back Face Unlock to its smartphone line.

The code specifically mentions the ability to use “face or fingerprint” authentication, which would be a first for a Google handset. A further dive into the APK reveals references to a face authentication feature for the Pixel 6 that Google considers “experimental.”

However, it’s unclear if this feature will launch alongside the Android 12L beta or if it will be part of a future Pixel ‘feature drop’ only available for the Pixel 6 Pro.

It’s unclear why Face Unlock might only release on for the Pixel 6 Pro, as the Pixel 6’s selfie hardware is nearly identical. The smaller model offers a narrower field-of-view and features an 8-megapixel shooter compared to the Pro’s 11.1-megapixels, but otherwise, it’s the same.

This isn’t the first time Android code has hinted at a potential Pixel 6 Pro Face Unlock feature. Back in November, a developer found some code in the Pixel 6 series’ ‘PowerHAL’ config file that referenced Face Unlock.

It’s worth mentioning that the Pixel 4 series was the last Google smartphone to offer Face Unlock, though it also lacked a fingerprint scanner. However, the Pixel 4 also had specific hardware to handle facial unlock, whereas the Pixel 6 line doesn’t.
