Everything you need to know about Sasktel’s Lüm Mobile

SaskTel surprised users this week when it announced the launch of its new phone subbrand, Lüm Mobile.

It’s a low-cost carrier that uses a membership model and eliminates the need for customer service representatives. Users must purchase data to make voice calls and send text messages. This is the only provider in the country to use a membership model.

But why the need for a new brand?

Lindsay Mazenc, a spokesperson at SaskTel, told MobileSyrup the company wanted to differentiate itself from what they usually offered and “cause some buzz.”

“We were noticing there are more customers preferring to manage their own services online with more affordable prices than our traditional full-service model,” Mazenc said.

While Lüm is a separate entity from SaskTel, which is a crown corporation of the Saskatchewan government, existing SaskTel staff are the ones working on the service.

Crown corporations pay a dividend back to the provincial government at the end of the year. No government money went into the creation of Lüm and SaskTel operates on its own, Mazenc said.

Lüm users pay their bills by purchasing a membership and turn to forums to get answers to their questions. The service is targeted towards those wanting to manage their own phone services. Users must have a Saskatchewan address to sign up.

Two levels of membership are available. A three-month option costs $50 and a full-year membership costs $180. 2GB of data costs $15, 6GB is $30, 14 GB is $55, and $25 GB is $80.

1MB of data gets users 10 texts or one minute of voice calls. Data can be topped up whenever more is needed. Unused data does not expire. A comparison calculator is available to help customers determine what plan is best for them.

Lüm has no plans to add more purchasing options at this time. This might change if the demand increases, but given the service is brand new, they’re sticking with what they have for now. At this time, details of how many customers have signed up are not available.

Mazenc said Lüm was “talked about for a while” but there was a push “this past calendar year to get this up and going.”

Lüm’s loud and colourful branding folded into the “buzz” SaskTel wanted to create, and further represents a change from their traditional service.

The new company is also focusing on environmental initiatives, given its top of mind for many, Mazenc said. Its current initiative is called Bloom with Lüm. Customer sim packages will contain seeds for wildflowers for pollinators and an explanation of the benefits of planting those seeds.

Microsoft changes Xbox Game Pass for PC to PC Game Pass

Microsoft revealed a very important announcement: ‘Xbox Game Pass for PC’ is now ‘PC Game Pass.’

If you found the name of Microsoft’s game subscription service for Windows computers confusing, well, the new name should clear that up. Xbox Game Pass remains available for Microsoft’s line of consoles. Nothing else has really changed.

Although, you still access PC Game Pass through the Xbox app on Windows. So, maybe it’s still confusing.

As an example of how little has changed overall, the Xbox Game Pass for PC PC Game Pass Twitter account tweeted a list of patch notes for the service that basically just says the name changed in various ways.

Beyond that, the prices for available Game Pass plans remain the same. PC Game Pass costs $11.99 in Canada, although right now you can get the first three months for just $1. Xbox Game Pass also costs $11.99. Game Pass Ultimate, which gives you Game Pass on PC and Xbox, as well as access to xCloud, Xbox Live Gold and EA Play, still costs $16.99 per month (and just $1 for the first month).

If you’re an avid PC gamer, I’d argue it’s worth checking out PC Game Pass. It’s generally pretty good value with access to a ton of games, including new additions each month and day-one access to Xbox Game Studios titles.

You can learn more about Game Pass here.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals hits Disney+ on January 12

Marvel’s Eternals came out in theatres on November 5th, but if you haven’t gone out to watch this MCU title, your wait is almost over.

On January 12th, the movie will hit Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. If you’re subscribed to the service, the film is available to watch at no extra cost, unlike Mulan or Cruella.

If you’re wondering why the wait was so short, it’s due to Disney movies only having to be exclusive to theatres for 45 days now, instead of the typical three-month wait period.

This might not be the same with the upcoming MCU title Spider-Man: No Way Home due to it being both a Marvel Studios- and Sony-produced film. If you’re planning on watching Spider-Man: No Way Home next week, here’s where you can watch all the Spider-Man movies in Canada.

Apple Watch owners launch lawsuit over alleged injury-causing defect

Four Apple Watch customers have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple in California over an alleged defect in the smartwatch that can cause the glass screen to detach and cause injuries.

Specifically, the lawsuit claims various Apple Watch models ranging from the Series 3 to Series 6 do not have enough space to allow for swelling of the battery. Because of the lack of space, even minor battery swelling can cause the watch screen to detach, crack or shatter.

“The screens are made either of Ion-X glass (aluminum models) or sapphire crystal glass (stainless steel and titanium models) and each have a razor-sharp edge on all four sides,” the customers said in the lawsuit.

When exposed, customers claim that sharp edge can cause serious injury — the lawsuit includes a photo of a deep slash on the arm of one customer allegedly caused by her Apple Watch Series 3.

Because the flaw was present in several Apple Watch models, the lawsuit claims Apple violated “various consumer protection laws” by continuing to release watches with the defect.

9to5Mac notes that a similar lawsuit filed against Apple in 2018 was tossed out by a federal judge because the plaintiff “failed to identify a specific defect.” As such, that’s likely why this lawsuit attempts to link battery swelling to the defect.

The new lawsuit “seeks to represent anyone who bought any model of the Apple Watch starting with the first generation in 2015, and continuing until last year.” However, it doesn’t include the Series 7 yet.

Meta testing live chat support for Facebook creators locked out of their account

Meta’s Facebook platform is now testing a live chat help feature for users who have been locked out of their Facebook accounts.

Facebook detailed the change on its ‘Meta for Creators’ website, noting that it’s testing live chat help for “some English-speaking users globally, including creators.” This marks the first time Facebook has offered live support for this kind of issue, and for now, it will focus on people who can’t log in to their accounts due to unusual activity or because of alleged community standards violations.

The change marks a significant shift for Meta/Facebook. The service has lagged behind other popular creator platforms when it comes to community moderation and page management tools. Plus, large creator accounts are more likely to be targeted for account theft, making tools for recovering accounts more valuable.

BuzzFeed News report from August detailed an underground economy of people who claim to have inside access at Meta. These insiders charge money to help restore accounts — creators who rely on social media for their business may find themselves with no choice but to pay when they get locked out.

Along with the live chat for account recovery, Meta announced other changes including improved comment moderation with keyword blocking, moderation assistance that can auto-hide comments with links or images, the ability to block users and any new accounts they make and a dedicated spot to view hidden comments.

There’s also a small test of live chat support for English-speaking creators in the U.S. who don’t have an assigned relationship manager. That can help mid-tier creators get quick responses to questions about things like payouts and new features.

Those interested can check out all the changes here.

Banjo-Kazooie is coming to Nintendo Switch Online in January

Nintendo already confirmed that N64 classic Banjo-Kazooie is making its way to the ‘Expansion Pack’ tier of its Switch Online service, but the game now has a January release window.

Rare studio head Craig Duncan retweeted Nintendo’s announcement regarding the news, stating that it’s “always a pleasure to work with our good friends at Nintendo.”

Once one of Nintendo’s most celebrated 2nd-party developers, Rare was purchased by Microsoft back in 2002. This also isn’t the first Nintendo and Rare have collaborated on a project. For example, Banjo and Kazooie were added as an additional fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate back in 2019.

Nintendo recently added Paper Mario 64 to Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier. The Expansion Pack has been heavily criticized for featuring shoddy emulation across both its Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles. Players have cited issues like delayed on-screen responses to button presses and weird graphical glitches. Nintendo has yet to address these issues.

An individual Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription costs $63.99 for 12 months, while a Family Membership costs $99.99 for 12 months.
