Bell Canada gets call-blocking technology approved by telecom watchdog

Telecom giant Bell now has the ability to block all fraudulent calls made through its network on a permanent basis.

This was made permanent after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved the organization’s application. The federal watchdog overlooks matters relating to broadcasting and telecommunications.

Bell originally tested the operation on a trial basis after sending an application to the CRTC in July 2019. The trial focused on blocking known fraudulent calls received over Bell’s networks.

Artificial intelligence is used to analyze suggested fraudulent calls, and if verified to be a scam, Bell blocks any relating calls from that number. This means calls being made to, from, or transitioning through a Bell network are subject to call blocking. The ruling only applies to voice calls. Texts or other forms of communication aren’t included.

The trial was ultimately extended until the commission made a decision.

A second application was filed in September 2020 asking the CRTC to make the feature permanent. According to the application Bell filed with the commission, the trial was successful. More than 1.1 billion calls were blocked between July 2020 and October 2021.

The company also said there were no “false positives,” legitimate numbers blocked after being believed to be fraudulent.

The CRTC’s approval is tied to a number of conditions. One is Bell must file an annual report detailing the number of calls blocked every month, and a breakdown on how long it took to detect a fraudulent call and block it, among other factors.

The change will apply to all of Bell’s affiliates as well.

This ruling is separate from the CRTC’s call for all carriers to implement STIR/SHAKEN technology, a system that would help users identify scam callers by identifying them. That system does not block callers but verifies their identity.

‘Amazon Counter’ pickup points launch in Canada

If for some reason you can’t have your Amazon packages delivered to your door, Canada Post locations, or the concierge at your condo, then Amazon Canada has now made it possible to pick up your goods at one of its ‘Amazon Hub’ locations.

The massive online retailer has announced the launch of ‘Amazon Counter’ in Canada, which it describes as “a new network of staffed pickup points that gives customers the option to pick up their Amazon packages in-store at convenient locations whether close to their home, on their daily commute, or while travelling.”

The company notes that there are “hundreds of Counter locations across Canada with plans to expand to hundreds more next year.” In addition, Prime Members can get two-Day and one-Day shipping at no additional cost with Amazon Counter.

“The network is also part of our ongoing commitment to supporting businesses across Canada by offering another way to bring in new customers and offer something new to their existing customers,” said Mike Strauch, country manager for Amazon Canada.

To access a store location, Locker, or a secure self-service kiosk, customers can select their preferred pickup location using a postal code. When their package is ready for pick-up, an email will be sent with a barcode, six-digit code and you’ll have three days to pick up the package from a locker, or seven days to collect from an Amazon Counter location.

Buy the Nintendo Switch and get an extra $89.98 worth of items for free

Shoppers Drug Mart has the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle, which includes the Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Cons paired with a free three-month Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The bundle is available for $379.99, about the same price that you’d pay for a regular Nintendo Switch, minus the free Mario Kart game (costs $79.99) and the three-month online membership (costs $9.99). So you’re essentially getting the value worth of $469.97 while spending only $379.99.

Pair that with the current Shopper’s Bonus Redemption Event, and you’ve got a solid deal at hand. Shopper’s Redemption Event is here till December 15th.

On a normal day, spending 50,000 PC Optimum points would account for $50 when you purchase something, but during Bonus Redemption Event, 50,000 points will give you $65, equivalent to 65,000 points.

Similarly, redeeming 100,000 points will net you $140 in value and 200,000 points will be equivalent to $300 off your purchase.

It’s worth noting that other retailers, including Walmart and Best Buy, have exclusive Nintendo Switch Bundles available too.

Walmart’s bundle includes the Switch console, Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Cons with a controller grip, a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership and a carrying case for the handheld for $379,96, whereas Best Buy is offering the same bundle as Shoppers, though it hasn’t gone live yet.

This marks the second time this week that AWS has caused issues for online platforms. This time around, the outage has impacted Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and more.

9to5Mac notes that AWS is currently working on the problem and expects it to be resolved shortly.

Walmart Canada’s Nintendo Switch bundle includes carrying case, year of online

Walmart Canada has a decent, exclusive Nintendo Switch bundle available now. The retailer’s bundle includes the Switch console, Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Cons with a controller grip, a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership and a carrying case for the handheld.

The bundle clocks in at $379.96, about the same as you’d pay for the regular Switch and Joy-Con package. That’s a roughly $50 added value for the same price. The carrying case costs around $24.99 (I couldn’t find the exact ‘Neon Blue Edition’ case included in the bundle, but similar case options on Nintendo Canada’s website cost $24.99).

As for the Switch Online service, a 12-month individual membership (the same as what comes in the Walmart bundle) typically costs $24.99.

Overall, I’d say it’s a pretty solid offer, although maybe not the best one ever. Other retailers have bundles priced at $380 that include more — for example, Best Buy Canada has a bundle “coming soon” with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a three-month Switch Online membership (a roughly $100 value).

Still, Mario Kart isn’t for everyone, and if you’d rather have the carrying case and longer access to Switch Online services, then the Walmart bundle is for you. You can check it out here.

EA to add women’s Hockey teams to NHL 22 in January

For the first time ever, EA will be adding playable women’s national Hockey teams to NHL 22, along with the women’s World Championship tournament in partnership with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

The update, which is scheduled for January 2022, will put NHL on par with other notable EA Sports titles, including FIFA, 2K’s and NBA 2K series, which already have women’s teams available to play with and against.

In total, 10 women’s international teams will be added to the ‘Play Now’ mode, including Canada and the United States.

“The introduction of women’s national teams to NHL 22 as part of the upcoming IIHF content will be an important moment for the franchise in its continued effort to reflect the diversity of the hockey community,” said EA Sports vice president, Sean Ramjagsingh in a statement given to ESPN.

EA also announced that the men’s World Hockey Championships will be introduced to tournament mode in early 2022.

While all those updates are scheduled for early next year, a new update coming out today will add the World Junior Hockey Championships to the game for the first time along with IIHF men’s teams.

It Takes Two wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021

It Takes Two has won Game of the Year (GOTY) at The Game Awards 2021.

The game was developed by Swedish studio Hazelight, the makers of the critically-acclaimed Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out.

It Takes Two was directed by Josef Fares, who is infamous at The Game Awards for a “f*** the Oscars” rant in 2017. Fares took the stage to accept the award — you can see his acceptance speech below:

The top honour was determined primarily by a jury of games industry media, although a small percentage of votes came from fans. The other GOTY contenders were Deathloop, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2 and Resident Evil Village.

It Takes Two follows a married couple that plans to get a divorce, only for them to be transformed into their kid’s toys. From there, they must begrudgingly work together to find a way to return to their human bodies.

Notably, the game is only playable via co-op — either locally or online. Buying the game nets you a ‘Buddy Pass’ that can be shared to play with someone else online at no additional cost. It Takes Two has received significant praise for its focus on inventive co-operative mechanics.

It Takes Two is available on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC. The game is also available on EA Play, which is included of a $16.99 Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss unveil ‘The Matrix Awakens’ experience

Following a tease earlier this week, Canadian actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss appeared at The Game Awards to formally unveil The Matrix Awakens.

Now available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it’s a Matrix gaming experience that features highly photorealistic visuals produced entirely within Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. In it, Reeves and Moss reprise their respective Matrix roles of Neo and Trinity. The clip that we got showed Neo and Trinity shooting at enemies while driving.

While it’s not intended to be an actual full game for new-gen console owners to play, it does showcase the graphical potential of the Fortnite maker’s engine.

The Matrix Awakens was unveiled alongside a new look at The Matrix Resurrections, which releases exclusively in Canadian theatres on December 22nd. Check it out below:
