Here’s the first full trailer for Paramount’s Halo series

At The Game Awards, Paramount unveiled the first full trailer for its long-awaited Halo TV series.

Check it out below:

Notably, Ymir, B.C.-born Pablo Schreiber (The Wire) is portraying iconic Spartan hero Master Chief, while Natasha McElhone (Californication) plays Spartan-II creator Dr. Catherine Halsey and Jen Taylor reprises her long-running role as the voice of the AI Cortana.

We get a glimpse at all of them here.

Halo is set to premiere sometime in 2022 on Paramount+ in the U.S. While that service is also available in Canada, its content lineup differs significantly from its U.S. counterpart due to the licensing agreements. It remains to be seen whether the series will also be on Paramount+ in Canada or on another service.

While there have been smaller live-action Halo adaptations in the past, Paramount’s series marks the culmination of a years-long effort from legendary director Steven Spielberg to bring the series to the big screen. At one point, it was set to be a movie, although it’s since shifted to a big-budget series. Spielberg remains attached as an executive producer.

It’s been a big few weeks for Halo. The iconic series celebrated its 20th anniversary in November, so Xbox has marked the occasion with the early release of Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer that month, and the full game, including the campaign, on December 8th. You can read more on the game in our review and interview with developer 343 Industries.

Former BioWare boss unveils Victorian-era survival crafting game Nightingale

The next game from former BioWare Edmonton boss Aaryn Flynn has been revealed at The Game Awards.

Officially titled Nightingale, it’s a shared-world survival crafting game set in a Victorian-era fantasy world. The game is being developed by Edmonton-based Inflexion Games, formerly known as Improbable IO.

In the trailer, you can see characters navigating different portals and facing off against terrifying creatures. Because of the shared-world element, you’ll be able to play either with other people or on your own.

Nightingale is set to launch in early access on PC next year.

It’s an exciting project, given Flynn’s pedigree. The Canadian developer left BioWare in 2017 to join Improbable after a lengthy tenure that had him overseeing the beloved Mass Effect trilogy.

Apple’s rumoured AR headset reportedly features 3D sensors for hand tracking

Instead of physical controllers, Apple’s often-rumoured augmented reality (AR) headset reportedly features 3D sensors designed for hand tracking.

As first reported by MacRumors, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s headset will include four sets of 3D sensors that are similar to the TrueDepth camera array included in the iPhone for Face ID.

Kuo says that the 3D sensors are able to detect objects and “dynamic detail” in user’s hands using the same technology that powers Face ID and that creates Animoji.

“Capturing the details of hand movement can provide a more intuitive and vivid human-machine UI,” says Kuo in his latest research note. He goes on to say that the headset’s sensors will be able to detect objects from up to 200 percent further away than the iPhone’s current TrueDepth camera system. It’s unclear if the AR headset will also feature physical controllers.

In the same research note, Kuo also details that the headset will weigh roughly 300-400g and that a “significantly lighter” 2nd-gen version with better battery life and a faster chip will release in 2024. Apple hopes to sell roughly three million units of its mixed reality headset in 2023, hinting that its initial release will likely be very expensive and somewhat limited.

This backs up previous rumours stating that Apple’s AR headset will cost in the range of $3,000 USD (roughly $3,812 CAD) primarily because of its pair of 8K displays.

Apple Music is now available on Google’s Nest smart speakers in Canada

Roughly a year after releasing on Google’s Nest and Home devices in the United States, Apple Music is now rolling out to the tech giant’s smart speakers in Canada.

The complete list of countries now includes Canada, Australia, India, Mexico and South Korea, which join the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany and Japan. To enable Apple Music on a Google Nest/Home device, head to the Google Home app on iOS/Android and select ‘Settings.’ Under this option, scroll down to ‘Services’ at the bottom and ‘Music’ Next, select ‘Apple Music’ and link your account to the Home app.

It’s worth noting that multiple MobileSyrup employees tested this and haven’t seen Apple Music appear in the Google Home app.

After you’ve set up Apple Music with Nest/Home, you’ll be able to ask Google Assistant to play songs and albums from Apple Music via Google’s smart speakers by default.

Though it’s unclear why this update took a full year for this feature to make its way to Canada, it’s great it’s finally here, especially if you primarily use Google’s Nest/Home smart speakers like me.

Chevy Silverado EV to enter production in 2023, estimated 600km+ range

There are so many electric vehicles (EVs) on the horizon over the next few years that it’s hard to keep track of them all, but in the race to build the first show-stealing electric truck, Chevy might end lagging behind the competition after confirming plans to start production on the electric Silverado truck in 2023.

While 2023 isn’t very far away, this date is still after Ford’s impressive Lighting F-150 and Tesla’s futuristic-looking Cybertruck.

However, perhaps I’ll change my tune when GM shows off the truck in a month at CES 2022 in Las Vegas. This will be the first electric truck under the Chevy brand and is expected to feature the same Ultium battery platform that the automaker is using in the electric Humer. This should give it substantial range and charging capabilities to compete with other flagship EVs currently on the market.

GM estimates around 400 miles (643km) of range from 100 percent charged and has shared that the truck will offer a glass roof option and all-wheel drive.
