Government of Manitoba partners with Canada’s largest rural-focused broadband provider to improve 5G access in hundreds of communities

Thousands of Manitoba residents will soon be connected to reliable internet services thanks to an agreement between Xplornet Communications Inc. and the Government of Manitoba.

The Rural Broadband Expansion Agreement outlines an expansion of 5G technology to specifically include 350 rural and 30 First Nations communities, offering better connectivity to
work, school, and health care, among other factors.

Xplornet announced it’s ready to get shovels in the ground as part of the commitment and start construction to deliver 5G wireless broadband to 125,000 homes and businesses across the province.

The project will be completed by accessing 3,200 kilometers of fibre from Manitoba Hydro. Construction is expected to end by the end of 2023.

Xplornet is adding an additional 1,500 kilometers of fibre optic cable and equipping 224 towers with 5G broadband technology. The company focuses on delivering broadband services to rural and remote communities across the country.

“We are pleased to sign this agreement with the Government of Manitoba to achieve our shared goal of increased connectivity in communities across Manitoba,” Allison Lenehan, president and CEO of Xplornet, said in a press release. “This is an important milestone in our plan to connect rural Manitobans to fast, reliable and affordable high-speed internet using next-generation broadband technologies.”

This project is part of Xplornet’s larger initiative to invest $500 million by 2025 in scalable fibre and 5g technology specifically for rural Canadians.

Fix coming for Android bug that broke 9-1-1 calls with Microsoft Teams installed

Google is aware of a strange issue with Android and Microsoft Teams that can prevent emergency service calls, such as dialling 9-1-1.

The company posted a detailed response following an investigation into a report about a Pixel device preventing someone from calling 9-1-1. A Reddit user detailed what happened with their Pixel 3 running Android 11 on U.S. carrier Verizon:

“I got off a phone call with my mom, and proceeded to dial 911 just by typing and calling on my pixel. My phone got stuck immediately after one ring and I was unable to do anything other than click through apps with an emergency phone call running in the background. This is all while the phone informed me that it had sent my location to emergency services.”

In its response, Google said it was able to “reproduce the issue under a limited set of circumstances,” and shared the following:

“We believe the issue is only present on a small number of devices with the Microsoft Teams app installed when the user is not logged in, and we are currently only aware of one user report related to the occurrence of this bug. We determined that the issue was being caused by unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system.”

The key here is that the issue only seems to impact people who have Microsoft Teams installed on their phone but haven’t signed into the app. Google also notes that the issue only impacts Android 10 and up. If you fall into that group, Google advises that you uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Teams — that should fix the problem in the interim.

Moreover, Google said that it and Microsoft had prioritized the issue due to the impact on emergency calling and it expects an update to Microsoft Teams to roll out soon. Additionally, Google will push an Android platform update to the Android ecosystem in January.

Finally, Google thanked Reddit user ‘KitchenPicture5849’ for bringing the problem to the company’s attention. Although the issue is quite concerning, it’s good to see Google and Microsoft taking fast action to resolve the problem.

It’s December 9th, which means this year’s Game Awards are officially taking place tonight in Los Angeles.

As is the case every year, the show will run for around two to three hours and offer a slew of game reveals, as well as the distribution of the titular awards. It’ll kick off with a pre-show at 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET before the main event begins at 5pm PT/8pm ET.

Notably, one of the key aspects of The Game Awards is that Canadian producer Geoff Keighley makes sure the event is streamed on a variety of platforms so fans around the world can tune in.

In particular, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and Facebook will all be livestreaming the show. If you have an Oculus Meta headset, you can also tune in through VR.

TD brings low balance prediction and more to its mobile banking app

TD has plans to enhance its mobile banking app with new features.

The Canadian banking company is introducing new digital insights in the TD app that are designed to prompt customers with a new set of guided self-serve options based on their transaction history.

Now when a customer completes a third-party international remittance transfer, they’ll be prompted with an option to securely send money through TD Global Transfer directly from the user’s TD account within the TD app.

TD says that its customers will receive targeted information through the TD app, informing them that a new TD Access Card is on the way when their card has expired. The report will detail how to activate the access card and other card features, how the card can be used to make online or in-app purchases, and how to pay recurring bills.

The app also now offers low balance prediction to alert customers that are likely to get a low balance in the next two weeks. Additionally, TD says it’s adding upcoming transaction insight to provide a list of upcoming bills in the next two weeks based on recurring transactions.

TD says it’s focused on delivering a connected experience across its platform. In 2022, TD expects to have more than 30 live use digital insights designed to offer a proactive a guided customer experience in the mobile app.

Where to stream The Matrix trilogy in Canada before The Matrix Resurrections

Nearly 20 years after The Matrix Revolutions, Neo is back.

The Matrix Resurrections, once again starring Canada’s own Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, will open exclusively in theatres on December 22nd. The sci-fi action flick is being helmed by original The Matrix series co-director Lana Wachowski, who also co-wrote the script.

Given that it’s been so long since the last Matrix, you might want to revisit the trilogy, or even experience it for the first time. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the ways in which you can stream the three original Matrix films.

The first film, simply titled The Matrix (1999), can be streamed on Crave. However, its two sequels, 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, are both available on Netflix. If you only have one or the other of these services, it’s worth noting that each film is available to rent for $4.99 CAD on premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes and Google Play.

The Matrix Resurrections follows Neo as he re-enters The Matrix with Trinity and joins a group of rebels to fight a new enemy. It’s worth noting that you can enter a special Warner Bros. QR code contest for a chance to win a trip to the December 16th Canadian premiere of The Matrix Resurrections with Reeves and Moss. Learn more here.

Another big December movie is Spider-Man: No Way Home — read more on where to stream the seven live-action Spidey flicks in Canada ahead of that multiverse adventure here.

Apple reportedly working on three Apple Watch models for 2022 release

Apple could have several Apple Watch models currently in the works.

According to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s 2022 smartwatch lineup will include the Apple Watch Series 8, the second-gen Apple Watch SE and a more rugged, “extreme sports” version of the wearable.

Earlier this week in his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also mentioned that Apple plans to release a “rugged” Apple Watch. Gurman’s report describes this new version of the Apple Watch as targeting athletes, bikers and people into extreme sports.

Given two sources have independently mentioned this new version of the Apple Watch’s existence, there’s likely at least some level of truth to the rumours. It’s unclear what features will be included in the Series 8 or 2nd-gen SE. That said, rumours regarding Apple Watch blood glucose monitoring have appeared several times over the past few years.

Kuo says that these three new Apple Watch models with will release in 2022.

Twitter tests a way to let users add content warnings to specific posts

Twitter is working on a new feature that will let users add content warnings to individual photos and videos sent out in tweets. According to the social network, the feature is currently in testing and only available to select users.

So far, the only way to include a content warning in your tweets is to add one individually. This means that every picture and video you post will offer a content warning. However, the new feature will allow users to add warnings to a singular tweet or specific categories.

The video above shows that when you’re editing a picture or video, you’ll be able to tap the flag icon in the bottom right corner of the toolbar to add a content warning. Following that, users will be able to categorize the warning as “nudity,” violence,” or “sensitive.” Then once you post the tweet, the image will be blurred out with an overlay explaining why the content is flagged.

Twitter says it will also continue to rely on user reports.
