Tile’s future owner is currently selling the location data of millions of its users

This news doesn’t bode well for Tile.

Family tracking service Life360 has been selling the location data of millions of its users, according to a new report from The Markup.

The company — which describes itself as a “family safety platform” — aims to allow family members to track each other through a smartphone app available on iOS and Android. The platform is currently used by 33 million people around the world.

According to The Markup’s reporting, Life360 sells its user’s location data — including information tied to children and adults — to several data brokers that then sell that information to third-party companies. That said, Life360 states that it doesn’t sell the location data of children under 13. Two former Life360 employees say that the company is one of the largest sources of location data in the tech industry and that it doesn’t ensure its location data can be traced back to individual users.

In a statement, Life360 CEO Chris Hull said that selling location data is an “important part” of the company’s business model and that it has “no means to confirm or deny the accuracy” of whether it’s one of the largest sources of location data in the industry.

Life360 is in the process of acquiring Bluetooth tracker company Tile for about $205 million USD (roughly $260 million CAD). While Tile has experienced success in the past, the company is likely under pressure from Apple’s recently released AirTag Bluetooth tracker and its ability to leverage the billions of Apple devices in the world to create its crowdsourced network.

In a press release, Life360 said that Tile’s tracking network of Bluetooth trackers will expand its current reach by 10x.

Tile most recently revealed a refreshed Bluetooth tracker lineup, including a new Mate, Sticker and Pro tracker.

SaskTel announces launch of new mobile service called Lüm Mobile

Lüm Mobile, a new digital mobile service created by Saskatchewan-based carrier Sasktel, aims to shift the world of mobile plans by supporting a “self-serve wireless” service.

There are no plans for purchase and customers won’t have to pay monthly bills. Instead, customers will buy memberships to access “data at great rates” with no expiration date. Customers will only pay for data, calls, and texts they use. More data can be purchased at any time, given Lüm Mobile focuses on a self-service model.

Membership is available in two auto-pay levels. The first one lasts three months and costs $50. The second lasts a year and costs $180. Data is purchased separately and is used to make calls and texts. 2GB costs $15, 6GB is $30, 14 GB is $55, and $25 GB is $80. 1 MB of data will get you 10 texts to Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Alternatively, the same amount of data will get one minute of talk.

Unlimited talk and text options are available as an add-on. The three-month option costs $25 and the one-year option costs $75.

“We have recognized that customers are moving increasingly towards self-serve online services,” said Doug Burnett, president and CEO of SaskTel, said in a statement. “Lüm Mobile will be a great option for customers that are seeking a more digital approach, allowing customers to customize and self-manage what works for their individual preference.”

Customers interested in accessing the service will have to bring in their own mobile phones to sign up.

Essex County, Ontario residents, businesses, will soon have access to high-speed internet

A new infrastructure network is currently being created in Stony Point, Ontario to bring high-speed internet to Essex County.

It will connect 945 residential homes, farms, and businesses to internet services by May 2022. The move will help community members grow their businesses and create new jobs.

“Our government made access to high-speed internet a major priority for rural Ontario and we are delivering on that commitment,” Lisa Thompson, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, said in a statement.“Families and businesses in these communities and throughout rural Ontario, need these services to do their work — whether it’s schoolwork or running a business. This is the type of critical infrastructure that will build Ontario and benefit the entire community.”

The initiative is part of the Province’s plan to connect every community in Ontario to broadband internet by the end of 2025. The project costs $3.7 million and funding is coming from the Provincial and Federal governments.

Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology Inc, a not-for-profit, will be completing the project. The two governments, along with the private sector, have already invested more than $255 million to bring high-speed internet to SouthWestern Ontario with the help of this service provider.

Waze releases data about Canadian driving trends for 2021

Waze has released data about Canadian driving habits amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and it turns out, almost 41 percent of the surveyed population won’t travel this holiday season.

“Waze asked respondents in Canada, U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Israel, Brazil and Mexico about their behind-the-wheel driver behaviours, favourite forms of entertainment, fun facts and aspirations, and what they experienced on the road this year,” reads Waze’s release. “Following a year where most of us stayed close to home, 2021 opened up new opportunities to hit the road and get back to travelling.”

According to the data collected, the month of August showed the highest increase in nationwide driving compared to pre-pandemic statistics. Here are the cities that drivers drove around the most this summer:

  1. Toronto, Ontario
  2. Montreal, Quebec
  3. Mississauga, Ontario
  4. Laval, Quebec
  5. Vaughan, Ontario
  6. Ottawa, Ontario
  7. Brampton, Ontario
  8. Hamilton, Ontario
  9. Longueuil, Quebec
  10. Quebec City, Quebec

About 70 percent of the surveyed population said that they drove [rimarily for shopping while residences and restaurants were top navigation inputs in Waze for Canadians in 2021. If someone in front of them isn’t moving, 52 percent of Canadian drivers would wait patiently instead of using their horns, likely because they’re listening to ‘STAY’ by Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI or ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd, which happen to be in the top five songs Waze-users listened to on Spotify while driving.

Waze also collected data about Waze users’ driving dreams. For 40 percent of the surveyed Canadians, James Bond’s Aston Martin was the car of choice followed by Batman’s Batmobile at 24 percent.

Globally, Jennifer Lopez and Elon Musk are the top celebrities that drivers would most like to have in their passenger seat, while Adele took top honours in Canada.

Check out this Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 DualSense controller

While this is pretty sick gamepad, it’s not something you can buy — so don’t get too hyped.

In partnership with LetsGoDigital, Enrico Bertagnoli (aka Berta) has created a new PlayStation 5 DualSense Spider-Man: Miles Morales controller.

The cool gamepad features dark chrome red webbing that reflects in an interesting way in the light. Berta even painted the light bar red, which ends up changing its colour glow when the gamepad is turned on. The back also features a spider in a matte gray colour scheme. Graphic designer Snoreyn created the video showing off Berta’s work.

If you want to see the controller in person, you’ll need to head to the SpelComputer museum in the Netherlands, where you can see the controller displayed in a frame.

If you really want one of these, you can hit up Berta’s social channel for a custom controller. According to LetsGoDigital, if there is a lot of interest Berta might just make more in a limited quantity.
