Huawei will reportedly unveil Mate V foldable on December 23

Huawei is reportedly planning to reveal a new clamshell foldable smartphone on December 23rd, according to a Weibo tipster.

The rumoured Mate V foldable handset will lead the upcoming event, but Huawei says it will also reveal new TVs, laptops and a new smart band.

According to previous leaks and patent filings, the Mate V Flip will sport a new hinge design and feature a unique heat pipe designed for the foldable. It’s unclear if this foldable smartphone, in particular, will feature the flexible heat pipe.

Huawei likely aims for the Mate V to be a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3.

That said, without access to Google’s Play Store, it’s unlikely we’ll see the Mate V release in Canada.

Beautural’s Lint Removal Fabric Shaver will rejuvenate your clothes

This is not your typical MobileSyrup post, but take note, because this one could extend the life of your clothes considerably.

For those who are unfamiliar, I’m talking about saving your clothing from the destruction caused by pilling. Because we care about your gear, whether it’s your pants, laptop case, socks or your winter hat, pilling is never a good thing.

According to Wikipedia, the term ‘pilling’ is defined as “A pill, colloquially known as a bobble, fuzzball, or lint ball is a small ball of fibres that forms on a piece of cloth. Pill is also a verb for the formation of such balls. Pilling is a surface defect of textiles caused by wear, and is generally considered an undesirable trait.”

Still with us?

MobileSyrup’s Patrick O’Rourke has been using Beautural’s Lint Removal Fabric Shaver for years and claims it’s helped extend the life of his winter hat, socks and pants considerably. However, a word of caution for any of you ‘pill removers’ out there. If you shave too much, you’ll get holes in your garments, so be careful.

The Beautural Lint Removal Fabric Shaver features two speeds, three shaving heights and three shaving hole sizes. The device’s description notes that the motor runs at up to 9000rpm and guarantees to “quickly remove all the lint, fuzz [and] bobbles on your garment or furniture.”

This gem works like a charm and only costs $17.97 (14 percent off right now).

Twitter testing ability to edit who can reply to live tweets on iOS, Android

Twitter is starting a new test on iOS and Android that will let users adjust conversation settings on live tweets.

According to a tweet from Twitter Canada’s head of communications, Cam Gordon, the social media platform will now give users the ability to restrict who can reply to a tweet after it’s live.

Twitter introduced conversation settings in August 2020, but until now users could only set reply restrictions when composing a tweet. Limits include letting everyone reply, only people that you follow or only people that you mention. Although those limits haven’t changed, the new test now lets users swap these settings on live tweets.

To do so, pick a tweet you want to change and tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner of the tweet. Then tap ‘Change who can reply’ and select one of the three options.

A picture shared by Gordon indicates Twitter will also highlight tweets getting more attention than usual and suggest users change the conversation settings for those tweets.

I had access to the new feature on both Android and iOS. However, it’s not clear how widespread the test is.

You can learn more about Twitter’s conversation settings here.

Twitter deal king Lbabinz shared a screenshot of the offer, which is reportedly being sent out via email to customers. It’s not clear if The Source targeted the promotion or not — presumably, you at least have to be on The Source’s email list to get the email. Several Twitter users replied to Lbabinz, noting that they also received the offer.

According to the email screenshot, people who receive the email can claim a $10 “Bonus Card” for use in-store or online at The Source. Fineprint at the bottom notes that customers must claim and redeem the Bonus Card before January 14th, 2022.

Ultimately, you may want to keep an eye out for an email from The Source. $10 off isn’t exactly the best deal ever, but a discount is a discount.

Google Photos private folder rolling out to all Android users

Since the summer, Google has been rolling out an update for the Google Photos app that adds a locked folder, and now it’s finally coming to even more Android phones.

When the update began to roll out last June, it started on Pixel phones, but now users with other phones have reported getting the update signifying that it’s likely rolling out to everyone. I was able to set up the feature on a OnePlus phone running the OxygenOS 12 beta, so it definitely seems likely that the update is out for all.

This folder isn’t perfect if you have multiple Android devices, but if you only have a single phone, it does an excellent job of keeping sensitive photos and videos out of the cloud and locked behind a pin code on your device. To set up a locked folder you can access it from the Utilities section within the Library page in the photos app.

It should also be noted that if you delete that Google Photos app, you’ll lose all the images you’ve locked away. This also means that if you switch to a new phone, you’ll need to transfer these photos manually. This update is also not available in the Google Photos app on iOS or the web.

CIBC mobile banking app best in Canada: report

Looking for the best mobile banking app in Canada?

According to the 2021 Forrester Digital Experience Review, users don’t have to look further than CIBC’s mobile app.

The app was tested on 60 separate criteria and received top markers in user experience and functionality.

Self-service features and assisted-service features were key for functionality and the app’s offering of universal search, credit score monitoring, and valuable alerts held up the user experience category.

This isn’t the first time the bank has been honoured. In the past eight years, CIBC has placed, or tied, for first place seven times.

“We continue to lead the way in delivering a robust mobile banking experience for our clients by evolving our app to offer an innovative, feature-rich, and radically simple user experience to help them realize their ambitions,” David Attard, a vice president at CIBC, said in a statement.

PlayStation is reportedly working on its own version of Xbox Game Pass

Sony is reportedly working on its own PlayStation video game subscription service to take on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, according to Bloomberg’s often very reliable Jason Schreier.

Codenamed internally at Sony as ‘Sparticus,’ subscribers would pay a monthly fee to subscribe to a library of new and classic titles. According to Bloomberg’s sources, the service will be available on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5.

The service, reported to launch this spring, will merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now under one subscription platform. PlayStation Plus is Sony’s online gaming platform that offers some monthly titles for free, and PlayStation Now lets users stream games via the internet and download select games. Bloomberg says that this new service will still be called PlayStation Plus, but the PlayStation Now brand will be phased out.

Sparticus is rumoured to feature three tiers: the first will offer a standard PlayStation Plus subscription, the second reportedly gives access to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles and the third features a library of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games, game streaming and demos.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Sony’s Xbox Game Pass-like ambitions. According to David Jaffe, the God of War series’ outspoken creator, Sony has been working on a “counterpunch” to Xbox Game Pass for quite some time.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription tier remains one of the best deals in gaming, especially with the addition of Forza Horizon 5 and soon Halo Infinite, the Xbox brand’s marquee title.

Xbox Game Pass is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Android, and iOS in betaGame Pass for Console and Game Pass for PC each cost $11.99/month.

Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $16.99/month and is required for streaming. On top of that, this tier includes Game Pass for both Console and PC, an Xbox Live Gold subscription and access to EA Play.

It’s unclear how much Sony plans to charge for its new expanded PlayStation Plus offering. The service currently costs $69.99/year.

Apple’s AirTag used in theft of luxury cars in Toronto

Toronto York Region Police say that thieves are using Apple’s Bluetooth tracking AirTag to aid in the theft of high-end vehicles.

In a recent press release, York Regional Police state that there have been at least five incidents where suspects have attached an AirTag to a car when it’s in a public area like a mall or parking lot. Rather than sitting in the open, the tiny AirTag is placed by the thieves inside the car’s fuel cap or tow hitch.

The thieves then use Apple’s ‘Find My’ app to locate the vehicle at its owner’s home.

Once the theives find the car, they gain access to the inside of the vehicle through the use of tools. Next, they utilize a tool typically used by mechanics to reset the vehicle to its factory default settings through a diagnostic port and reprogram the vehicle to work with a key they have.

York Regional Police said over 2,000 cars have been stolen in the area over the past year. That said, the police force claims that 100 people have been arrested and 350 vehicles have been returned to their owners.

York Police provided this photo as an example of where thieves are hiding an AirTag on vehicles. Image credit: York Regional Police

While car thieves could use similar tracking devices from a company like Tile, Apple’s AirTag has made the concept of a Bluetooth tracker far more popular. The tech giant’s network of billions of Apple devices is also far more robust than Tile’s crowdsourced offering.

Though Apple added a feature to the AirTag that notifies iPhone users when an unwanted tracker not attached to their iCloud account is nearby, users need to watch for this message. Further, you also need to own an iPhone, though Apple is working on an Android app that will replicate this anti-tracking functionality on Google’s mobile OS.
