Koodo email mistakenly offers $8/45GB, $55/55GB and $70/70GB plans

Koodo is about to have a very bad day.

According to a chaotic thread on RedFlagDeals, Koodo sent out email offers to a bunch of customers with absolutely insane plans, including $8/mo 45GB, $45/45GB and $70/70GB. So far, all the RFD reports say that these plans aren’t actually available when clicking the link in the email — instead, the offer is for fairly regular in-market plans like $50/10GB and $55/12GB (both of these plans are actually listed on Koodo’s website too).

So far, those that have called in say that reps don’t know about the plans. Some reps claim the email offers are spam (although that doesn’t appear to be the case). Other people can’t even get through. Likely, the call lines are swamped with people trying to claim the offer.

However, chances are the emails include an error — as some RFD users pointed, it’s strange that the monthly cost and data amount are the same numbers (i.e. $45 and 45GB).

Regardless of what the situation is, if you do call Koodo, don’t be a dick to the customer service reps — they have nothing to do with the emailed offer, mistake or otherwise.

Aside from the fact that there’s basically no way anyone will convince Koodo to actually give out this plan, the most annoying part is that these are the kind of prices Canadians should have. Other countries have prices at this level, thanks to having actual competition.

Niantic’s Pikmin Bloom was downloaded 2 million times in two weeks

Pikmin Bloom, Niantic’s latest augmented reality game that is very inspired by Pokémon Go, seems to be a moderate success — at least so far.

According to app analytics firm Sensor Tower (via Eurogamer), Pikmin Bloom has been downloaded 2 million times in the past two weeks. Breaking the numbers down further, nearly half of the installs come from users in Japan, with the U.S. holding second place and the U.K. coming in third.

In comparison, Pokémon Go hit 75 million downloads in its first two weeks and Harry Potter: Wizards Unitewhich is shutting down in January 2022 — gained 12.4 million new users.

Of course, it’s important to note that Pikmin is a less popular property than Harry Potter, which makes these numbers seem far more positive. Niantic likely has far more modest goals when it comes to Pikmin Bloom.

In Pikmin Bloom, players grow and feed Pikmin creatures while collecting various flowers. The game is free-to-play and is available on iOS and Android. I’ve yet to try the game, but as a fan of the Pikmin series and in particular, Pikmin 3, I’m hoping to check it out over the holiday season.

Disney+ Original X-Men 97 coming to streaming service in 2023

Queue the original X-Men theme music.

Announced during Disney+ Day, Marvel is bringing back the X-Men.

The new title, X-Men 97, won’t be a remake of the original series, however. The original show, X-Men: The Animated Series,  started back in ’92 and ended in ’97, so it looks like this new series is poised to be a direct sequel.

It’s worth noting that X-Men: The Animated Series is Canadian series and was animated in Toronto, Ontario. In fact, the voice actors for the characters, Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, and more are all Canadian. And interestingly, the voice of Rogue, Lenore Zann, later became a Canadian politician.

X-Men 97 is set release on Disney+ in 2023, and I can’t wait.

Pixar Disney+ Day 2021 stream reveals documentary about Canadian-made Turning Red and more

Disney has released its Pixar 2021 Disney+ Day Special, which offers a brief sneak peek at some of the beloved animation studio’s upcoming projects.

The four-minute presentation follows Pixar boss Pete Docter (Soul) as he goes around Pixar’s campus and checks in with some collaborators.

To start, Larry the Cable Guy popped up to announce Cars on the Road, a new animated Cars series that features Mater (Larry) and Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen. It’s set to hit Disney+ sometime in 2022.

Next up, Docter checked in with Canadian writer-director Domee Shi and American director Angus MacLane to confirm that making-of documentaries on their respective Turning Red and Lightyear films will come to Disney+ in 2022. Turning Red, which is set in Toronto and co-stars Ottawa’s own Sandra Oh, will hit theatres in March 2022, with Lightyear, a Chris Evans-led spin-off of Toy Story, set to drop in June.

Following this, Jack Dylan Grazer, the voice of Alberto in Luca, showed up to promote the recently released Ciao Alberto Disney+ short. And finally, Pixar confirmed a new series called Win or Lose that’s dropping on Disney+ in 2023. It’s about a middle-school co-ed softball team leading up to a big game, with each episode focused on a different player.

You can watch the full Pixar 2021 Disney+ Day Special on Disney+ here. Note that a Disney+ subscription is required.

Rivian IPOs with $100 billion valuation, beats all automakers except Tesla

The hot new tech stock this week is electric vehicle (EV) company Rivian.

The upstart automaker hasn’t even mass-produced a vehicle yet, but it’s already worth more than every other car company you’ve ever heard of except for one, Tesla.

Not only did Rivian surpass other automakers, it’s also the biggest IPO this year with a valuation of over $100 billion USD (roughly $125 billion CAD). CBC News also reports that this is the biggest IPO in the U.S. since FaceBook in 2012.

While this is a crazy valuation for a company, it does show how much people are excited about EVs. Rivian has only had a few hundred with plans to hit 1,000 by the end of the year between its R1T pickup truck and R1S crossover. The company is also building electric delivery vehicles for Amazon and works moderately closely with Ford.

While  Rivian is seemingly overvalued right now, it’s worth considering that its competitor, Tesla, is worth over $1 trillion, so there’s a possibility it could also surge in value if it scales appropriately over the next few years.
