Tesla vehicle in Full Self-Driving mode reportedly crashed in California

A Tesla Model Y reportedly crashed earlier this month in California while in the Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta mode.

As reported by The Verge, the November 3rd crash happened in Brea, a city southeast of Los Angeles. It marks likely the first incident involving the company’s controversial driver assist feature. No one was injured in the crash, although the vehicle allegedly was “severely damaged.”

The Verge notes that the crash was reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which currently has multiple overlapping investigations into Tesla’s Autopilot system. The incident report appears to be made by the owner of the Model Y — you can read a snippet published by The Verge below:

“The Vehicle was in FSD Beta mode and while taking a left turn the car went into the wrong lane and I was hit by another driver in the lane next to my lane. the car gave an alert 1/2 way through the turn so I tried to turn the wheel to avoid it from going into the wrong lane but the car by itself took control and forced itself into the incorrect lane creating an unsafe maneuver putting everyone involved at risk. car is severely damaged on the driver side.”

Tesla has come under increased scrutiny and criticism for testing its FSD beta software with untrained vehicle owners on public roads. There are several issues with the process Tesla has chosen for the FSD beta. Instead of trained drivers, the company gathered data on Tesla drivers, gave them safety scores and then provided FSD access to those who had high scores. Moreover, Tesla has also repeatedly delayed or even reverted software updates due to bugs and other concerns.

However, perhaps one of the most significant issues is the misleading name. Full Self-Driving is not an autonomous driving system, and motorists need to pay attention and keep their hands on the steering wheel to correct the car when it makes mistakes.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that we do not yet know the full details of this particular incident. I’ve seen some people already calling parts of the crash report into question. While it’s possible — likely even — that new details will emerge as more information becomes available, it doesn’t mean that concerns about testing FSD on public roads are unreasonable or illegitimate. As FSD becomes available to more people for testing, the likelihood of incidents like this will go up. While some Tesla drivers signed up to try FSD, other drivers have not.

Prime Video is offering a new clip ‘share a clip’ feature for iOS

Amazon’s Prime Video now offers an interesting ‘share a clip’ feature on iOS.

According to Prime Video’s press release, the company utilizes “X-Ray” technology to allow users to share their favourite clips from select Amazon Originals, such as The Boys, The Wilds, Fairfax and Invincible. It’s unclear what the term “X-Ray’ actually means in this context.

It’s worth noting that this Prime Video feature is reportedly only available in the U.S. currently, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see it make its way to Canada in the coming weeks.

Below is how the feature works:

When you’re watching an episode of a show, hit the ‘Share a clip’ button and this will pause the show, and open a clip, edit and share screen. Following that, Prime Video will create a 30-second clip and you’ll be able to move the clip forward of backward to find the exact clip you want to share.

Once the feature is ready press the ‘Share’ icon and you can upload it via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, iMessage, Messenger and WhatsApp.

We’ve reached out to Amazon for more information regarding when or if the feature will release in Canada.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is rumoured to launch on November 15

Suit up Spartans, because Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer could launch on November 15th, just in time for the franchise’s 20th anniversary.

This rumour comes from frequently reliable source of video game leaks, @NateTheHate2, which means there’s likely at least some level of truth to it. That said, this leaker is also behind the rumours that Game Boy games were coming to Nintendo’s Switch Online service, and that didn’t happen — at least not yet.

On the other hand, Halo leaker @halodotapi also tweeted about the rumoured surprise release date.

It would be a little out there for 343 Industries to launch Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer ahead of the game’s single-player campaign on December 8th, but given the mode will be free-to-play and in a sense, stands on its own, it could be possible.

It’s also worth noting that the game that started it all, Halo: Combat Evolved, will have been released 20 years ago as of November 15th. Infinite was originally scheduled to be an Xbox Series X/S launch title last year, but following a mixed reception to its initial reveal trailer, the game’s release was pushed back to 2021.

Halo Infinite releases on December 8th, 2021 on the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox and PC. The game is also part of Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service.

For more on Infinite‘s multiplayer mode, check out my story focused on one of game’s early test flights. MobileSyrup will have more on Halo Infinite in the coming weeks.

Your iPhone has a background sound feature that you likely don’t know about

Though the feature was introduced alongside iOS 15, ambient ‘Background Sounds’ have gone widely unnoticed. The feature can help you relax, minimize distractions, increase productivity and get a good night’s sleep.

Background Sounds offers three noise options, including ‘Balanced,’ ‘Bright’ and ‘Dark Noise,’ along with ‘Ocean,’ ‘Rain,’ and ‘Stream’ tracks. The feature can also be used while playing other media on your phone.

To initially set up Background Sounds, you’ll have to go into your iPhone’s accessibility settings, after which the feature can be added to the Control Center for easy access.

First off, make sure you are running iOS 15, then follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open ‘Settings’ and scroll down to ‘Accessibility.’
  2. Navigate to the ‘Hearing’ section and tap on ‘Audio/Visual.’
  3. Tap on ‘Background Sounds’ and toggle the setting on.

As soon as you toggle the setting on, the default ‘Rain’ sound should start playing. You can tap on ‘Sound’ to select the ambient noise of your choice and adjust its volume from the slider right below.

Check out the video below for reference on how to enable the new feature:

Once enabled, the feature should automatically appear in the Control Center (it did for me), but if for any reason it doesn’t, head to ‘Settings’ again and navigate to ‘Control Center.’ Scroll down to ‘More Controls’ and tap the green ‘+’ sign next to ‘Hearing.’

Watch the video below for reference:

The feature is now available to use directly from the Control Center:

Rogers, Creative BC to launch $1 million fund for Indigenous creators in B.C.

Rogers Group of Funds and Creative BC announced plans to jointly establish a new $1 million fund for Indigenous creators in British Columbia.

As part of the fund’s launch, Rogers announced a collaborative partnership with the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO) to open the first program, delivering a top-up to B.C.-based recipients of ISO’s recently announced Development Grant program. Data from ISO shows B.C.-based Indigenous applicants far outnumber those from other provinces.

Rogers Group of Funds will support the fund and Creative BC will administer it. Rogers says it’s Canada’s first provincial-national partnership focused on Indigenous creators. Further, it’ll be the first targeted Indigenous screen fund at Creative BC.

Additionally, Rogers says the fund will help increase access and representation for Indigenous produces and Indigenous-led production companies in B.C.’s domestic motion picture industry. Moreover, the fund is intended to contribute to strong foundations that can help correct the systemic and historic underrepresentation of Indigenous stories and storytellers in Canada’s screen sector.

Earlier this week, Rogers also announced a partnership with Coastal First Nations to build new cell towers in Haida Gwaii as well as support a conservation-based economy and Indigenous entrepreneurs in B.C.

Here are the most played PS5 games from the console’s first year

In celebration of the PlayStation 5’s first release anniversary, Sony has revealed the top 10 games in terms of hours played from the console’s initial release year.

Unsurprisingly, Fortnite comes out on top, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and, of course, FIFA 21. Next up is NBA 2K1, and out of left field, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla follows in the 4th position. Other recognizable titles like Demon’s Souls, Destiny 2 and more also appear on the list.

Below is a full list of the top titles on the PS5 in terms of hours played:

    • Fortnite
    • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
    • FIFA 21
    • NBA 2K21
    • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
    • Destiny 2
    • MLB The Show 21
    • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
    • Demon’s Souls
    • NBA 2K22

In the same blog post, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, writes that more than 360 games launched on the PlayStation 5 in its first year and that more than 25 games are currently in development at PlayStation Studios (for the record, I doubt Ryan actually wrote this post himself). While it’s been a monumental year for current-gen console gaming across both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it’s hard not to imagine how much more massive it could have been if the ongoing chip shortage didn’t hit the production of both systems.
