Twitch is now available on Nintendo Switch

Amazon-owned live streaming service Twitch is now available on the Nintendo Switch.

The app is available as a free 31MB download from the Switch eShop.

Amusingly, though, outside of Hulu in the U.S., the Switch still doesn’t offer popular global video streaming services like Netflix. Both the Wii U (the console’s predecessor) and 3DS supported Netflix, and in 2018, the streaming service confirmed it was interested in bringing its app to the Switch as well. PlayStation and Xbox consoles, meanwhile, now have Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV and Crave.

Only time will tell whether greater video app support may come to the Switch, especially as Nintendo has, admittedly, been (slowly) adding long-awaited features as of late. In September, the company finally rolled out support for Bluetooth audio, while N64 (and Sega Genesis) games came to Nintendo Switch Online via a more expensive tier last month. However, some of the N64 titles have been marred by technical issues.

Microsoft slashes Surface Duo’s price by 50 percent

Microsoft’s late 2019-released Surface Duo is currently 50 percent off as part of the company’s holiday sale.

Regularly available for $1,869.99, the 128GB dual-screen smartphone-tablet is currently listed for $934.99 at the Microsoft Store, marking a 50 percent discount. However, the price still seems to be too high, considering you can get way better devices for the same price or less.

Regardless, if you’re still adamant about getting the Surface Duo, here are a few specs about the device:

The Surface Duo features two 5.6-inch PixelSense Fusion touchscreen displays that let you either view two apps at once or expand one app to both screens. The dual-screen phablet is powered by a 2.84GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 6GB of DRAM. The device uses a 3,577mAh battery that “had a surprising amount of longevity,” said MobileSyrup staff reporter Jonathan Lamont in his review of the Surface Duo. “The Surface Duo always made it through a day of use, usually with five or more hours of screen on time.”

Lamont gave the Surface Duo a modest 7/10 rating in his review. You can learn more about the device’s pros and cons here and decide if the Surface Duo is for you.

The device is available for $934 as part of Microsoft’s broader ‘Holiday Sale.’

Shell Canada to receive $3.95 million from federal government to create EV charging network

Shell Canada has revealed that it received $3.95 million in funding from the Canadian federal government to build 79 electric vehicles (EV) fast-charging stations across five Canadian provinces.

This initiative includes 36 EV chargers in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan, according to the NRCan’s EV and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative, as first reported by Electric Autonomy.

Electric Autonomy says that it’s unclear if the locations included in the report feature all of Shell’s planned EV charging stations or if they only relate to the chargers constructed with government funding.

In total, Shell plans to build roughly 500,000 electric vehicle chargers across North America by 2025. The report also mentions that the federal government will give $300,000 in funding to convenience store 7-Eleven to build 12 charging stations at six of its locations in British Columbia.

Processor-wise, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra will feature a Snapdragon 898 chipset, up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will also offer Android 11, with IP52 water resistance, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, NFC and Bluetooth 5.2.

Walmart Canada offering free Turtle Beach headset with Far Cry 6 purchase

Walmart Canada is currently running an exclusive gaming promotion that offers a free Turtle Beach Recon 70 Headset with the purchase of Far Cry 6.

The Ubisoft Toronto-developed open-world shooter costs $79.99 CAD, while the Recon 70 is normally priced at $49.99 on its own.

It’s important to note that the bundle specifically includes the ‘Arctic Camo’ headset if you’re particularly picky on the colour. The bundle is available of the PS4, PS5 and Xbox versions of the game. The promotion runs from November 11th to November 17th.

Originally released on October 7th, Far Cry 6 follows guerrilla fighter Dani Rojas as they attempt to topple the ruthless dictator Antón Castillo on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. Notably, Castillo is played by Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame.

In related news, Vaas: Insanity, the first DLC story add-on for Far Cry 6, was recently given an official November 16th release date. As the title suggests, the DLC focuses on Far Cry 3‘s standout villain, Vaas Montenegro, once again played by Montreal’s own Michael Mando, who co-stars on Better Call Saul with Esposito.

Xbox Design Lab adds more controller options, including rubberized grips and metallic finishes

Xbox Design Lab, Microsoft’s custom Xbox controller program, now offers a bunch of additional personalization options.

To start, rubberized grips and metallic finishes are returning to Design Lab. These features were offered during the previous iteration of the program but were missing once it was relaunched in June.

This means Xbox Design Lab now offers all of the customization options that it did in the past, with the added benefit being that you can use them on the slightly revised Xbox Wireless Controller that was introduced with the Series X/S.

Further, Xbox is introducing the following new options for Design Lab:

  • Black rubberized grips for both the back case and side grips
  • Nineteen new metallic finish colours for D-Pads and Triggers (Sterling Silver, Pewter Silver, Gunmetal Silver, Abyss Black, Retro Pink, Deep Pink, Oxide Red, Zest Orange, Gold, Electric Volt, Velocity Green, Glacier Blue, Dragonfly Blue, Mineral Blue, Photon Blue, Midnight Blue, Regal Purple, Nocturnal Green and Warm Gold)
  • Three new colour options for controller parts — Dragonfly Blue, Nocturnal Green (previously Military Green) and Velocity Green (previously Electric Green)

Alternatively, new “Inspired by” controller designs based on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 2042, Riders Republic and Forza Horizon 5.

Design Lab controllers start at $84.99 CAD and can be customized and ordered here.

It’s worth noting that the Design Lab expansion comes during Microsoft’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of Xbox, which falls on November 15th. On that date, the company will have a special stream to commemorate the history of both Xbox and Halo, which both originated in November 2001. You can read more on that here.

There reportedly won’t be a new Pixelbook in 2022

Pixelbook lovers are sure to be pretty disappointed by this news.

At a Qualcomm press event, Google’s retail partner manager for Chromebooks, Chrys Tsolaki, offered insight into the future of the Pixelbook line.

When asked about Google’s next Pixelbook, Tsolakisaid  “Next year [2022] there won’t be anything coming. In the future, I don’t know.”

While it’s possible that Google could launch a Pixelbook in 2023, that’s still a quite a while away. I’m surprised that we won’t be seeing a Tensor chip-powered Pixelbook next year.

Currently, the only Pixelbook you can purchase from Google is the Pixelbook Go, which the company launched alongside the Pixel 4 and 4 XL back in 2019.

Subaru steps into the EV space with the Solterra

After building some hype back in the spring, Subaru has finally revealed its first all-electric vehicle, the 2022 Solterra.

The crossover is coming to Canada next year, but the automaker has yet to share the price. However, it’s not the flashiest EV we’ve ever seen, so I’m holding out hope that it won’t be priced too high compared to the existing gasoline Outback ($31,000 CAD).

The automaker says the car will come in both front- and all-wheel drive versions. The single motor design will only have 201 horse power, but the larger option is pushing 214 horses. Both versions share the same 71.4 kWh battery that can push the base model for an estimated 530km, and the dual-motor option aims for 460km. To charge, the car supports DC fast-charging up to 150kW, so we’d expect that to take around an hour to top up on a fast charger.

There isn’t much more info out on the car yet, but the interior looks pretty standard compared to most other modern cars on the roads today.
