Sony cuts PlayStation 5 production due to chip shortage: report

Sony has reduced its PlayStation 5 production forecast, according to Bloomberg.

The company is now reportedly expecting to manufacture 15 million consoles by March 2022, which would be down slightly from the 16 million it had publicly announced last month.

Per Bloomberg, the issue stems from the ongoing global chip shortage, which has been a recurring problem in many industries, not just gaming. Earlier this week, Valve’s Nintendo Switch-esque Steam Deck was delayed into 2022 for this reason.

However, the outlet also notes that there are logistical challenges stemming from uneven COVID-19 vaccine rollouts in countries where these chips are being made.

Ultimately, though, one million fewer consoles isn’t a drastic reduction, and hopefully, PlayStation can maintain its relatively steady production of the consoles going into the new year.

Instagram tests new ‘Take a Break’ feature to encourage time away from the app

Instagram is testing a new feature called ‘Take a Break.’

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said in a recent video posted on Twitter that “If you opt-in, [the feature] encourages you to take a break from Instagram after you spend a certain amount of time on the app; 10, 20, or 30 minutes.”

Mosseri says that this feature is part of a larger effort to give people more control over their experience on Instagram. “Ultimately, you know what’s best for you when it comes to how you use the app. And we want to make sure we provide tools for you to shape Instagram into what works for you.”

An Instagram spokesperson told The Verge that users will need to opt-in to turn on the feature, but that it will specifically send a notification to teens encouraging them to try ‘Take a Break.’

Mosseri’s video shows what the feature will look like. There will be a prompt in the user’s feeds that won’t take over the entire screen. When the user turns on the feature, they’ll see a prompt that enables them to select what length of the time they want to spend on the app before they receive a reminder with suggestions like “take a few deep breaths, write down what you’re thinking,” and more.

Additionally, Mosseri said that Instagram worked with third-party experts to figure out what tips to offer and how to frame the feature. He says that Facebook-owned Instagram wants to be “comfortable,” with the feature before its wider launch next month.

Disney+ suffered its weakest quarterly growth since its inception

Despite new additions to its vast catalogue of movies and shows, including the critically acclaimed Black Widow, Disney has reported fewer new subscribers than it expected in the last quarter, which ended in early October.

The streaming service gained 2.1 million new subscribers, around 7 million less than the initially predicted 9 million figure ballpark. This was Disney+’s weakest quarterly growth since its inception two years ago. The streaming service currently sits at 118.1 million paid users in total.

Further, although all of Disney’s theme parks were open since the pandemic shutdown, profits from this division of the company fell far short of analyst expectations.

The underwhelming subscriber growth may be the reason why Disney is offering one month of Disney+ for $1.99 for Disney+ Day. The subscription service usually costs $11.99/month. On November 12th, Disney will reveal a slew of new content coming Disney+, as well as special presentations to offer “sneak peeks” of what’s coming to the service from all of its brands, including Marvel and Pixar.

Quebec Government looking to fit province into Tesla’s supply chain

A new report has been released that claims members of the Quebec government flew to California to talk to Tesla about becoming part of the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s battery supply chain.

This move makes sense for the province since Quebec is rich in battery minerals like nickel, lithium and more, and is likely looking to leverage its natural resources as parts of the world slowly shift to EVs. The province’s provincial government also recently announced that it plans to invest between $1 and $3 billion towards extracting these minerals.

The report regarding the Quebec report comes originally from Le Journal de Montrealbut later on, a representative for Quebec’s economy minister confirmed that the government met with Telsa last month, according to Electrek

Overall this doesn’t mean much yet, but it’s exciting to see that Quebec is looking for more ways to get in on the electric revolution.

Coastal First Nations, Rogers partnership to build cell towers in Haida Gwaii

Rogers Communications and Coastal First Nations (CFN) announced a partnership set to benefit CFN communities by improving connectivity, strengthening environmental stewardship and help Indigenous entrepreneurs grow their businesses with digital tools.

The partnership covers several initiatives that will be announced between now and 2022. These initiatives include academic research projects, the creation and growth of Indigenous-led internet service providers (ISPs) and digital platforms for Indigenous entrepreneurs.

As part of the initial partnership announcement, Rogers and CFN also unveiled four initiatives:

  • Build five new cell sites and upgrade existing infrastructure on Haida Gwaii in B.C. and bring new “near contiguous” coverage to Highway 16 from Masset through Port Clements to Queen Charlotte.
  • Rogers will invest and support CFN’s environmental stewardship work that supports a long-standing sense of collective responsibility to care for our lands and waters.
  • Rogers Sports & Media and CFN will raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing the Great Bear Rainforest, such as the threatened salmon population, with an upcoming music festival involving Indigenous artists and performances.
  • ‘Today’s Shopping Choice’s Let’s Shop Better’ platform will support new opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs from CFN communities.

Rogers also said it would engage in research and training initiatives and partner with CFN to support community events, increase its local presence and provide employment opportunities for youth and local entrepreneurs.

Rogers announces Pro On-the-Go service is expanding to Winnipeg

Rogers has announced that its Pro On-the-Go service is expanding to Winnipeg, Manitoba giving customers personalized support and same-day delivery when ordering a new device.

The Rogers Pro On-the-Go provides customers with a contactless experience, designed for those with a busy schedule, seek extra support when learning about a new device, or who are unable to visit a brick-and-mortar location. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogers has identified key locations and begun expanding the reach of the Pro On-the-Go service.

“Rogers is focused on keeping Canadians connected to what matters most, and for residents of Winnipeg, that’s even more possible now that a Rogers Pro can deliver their new wireless device and specialized service right to their door,” said Dave Fuller, the president of wireless at Rogers Communications, in a statement.

With its latest expansion, Manitoba customers can order a new device and have it hand-delivered by a Rogers Pro. The service also offers personalized support to set up the new device. Roger Pros will guide customers on how to do an initial setup, transfer media and apps, set up their email, and tweak their personal preferences. All of these perks are provided to the customer at no extra cost.

Rogers says that over 14 million Canadians now have access to the Rogers Pro On-the-Go service. Customers in the Greater Toronto Area, southwestern Ontario, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Greater Vancouver can access the service and gain access to its perks. The company has also confirmed that it plans to expand to more Canadian markets “in the coming months.”
