Microsoft says it’s ‘confident’ it can get Call of Duty: Warzone on Nintendo Switch

Microsoft is optimistic that it could overcome the technical limitations of the Nintendo Switch to bring Call of Duty to the platform.

In a filing to the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Microsoft outlined what could be done to make good on its 10-year “binding” agreement with Nintendo to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo platforms should its acquisition of Activision Blizzard be approved.

According to Microsoft, the engine powering the popular battle royale series is “mature and has been optimized to run on a wide range of hardware devices.” This includes the Xbox One, a nearly 10-year-old console, and PC GPUs “released as far back as 2015” — both of which predate the Switch’s 2017 launch. Further, Microsoft notes that Activision also offers a (yet-to-be-released) mobile version of Warzone that “runs natively on mobile phones which have much lower performance specifications than the Nintendo Switch.”

More specifically, Microsoft said there are “standard techniques” that have been used for Switch ports of the likes of Apex LegendsFortniteDoom Eternal and Crysis 3. On top of that, Microsoft says it’s “confident” in Activision Blizzard’s developers, who have a “long history of optimizing game performance for available hardware capabilities.”

Of course, this is all hypothetical until Microsoft actually owns Activision Blizzard. As it stands, European regulators are still deliberating on the deal, although Reuters reported last week that Microsoft’s deals with the likes of Nintendo and Nvidia have helped stave off governmental anti-competition concerns. Sony, for its part, has staunchly opposed the acquisition, arguing that Call of Duty would give Microsoft an unfair advantage. Most recently, the company expressed concerns that Microsoft might release inferior versions of games on PlayStation.

We’ll know for sure which argument ultimately wins out when the CMA delivers its final ruling on April 26th.

Tesla Model Y under NHTSA scrutiny for steering wheel malfunction

Tesla’s yoke-shaped steering wheels have always been controversial. The EV’s steering wheel is again becoming a topic of conversation, but the shape of the wheel isn’t the problem this time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into the Model Y after reports of the vehicle’s steering wheel detaching surfaced on social media.

According to the NHTSA, it has received two separate reports of the Model Y’s steering wheel detaching, with Prerak Patel’s experience going viral on Twitter.

“Family was excited to receive Tesla Y delivery on 1/24/2023. Was driving on highway and all the sudden steering wheel fall off, was lucky enough there was no car behind and I was able to pull on divider,” wrote Patel.

According to the NHTSA, both Teslas were delivered missing a steering wheel retaining bolt. “Sudden separation occurred when the force exerted on the steering wheel overcame the resistance of the friction fit while the vehicles were in motion. Both known incidents occurred at low vehicle mileage,” wrote the NHTSA, adding that it now plans to assess the risk of the same steering wheel defect appearing in other Tesla Model Y vehicles.

Patel was given two options by Tesla. He could either keep the vehicle with assurance that the steering wheel won’t malfunction again, or he could get a new Model Y. Patel chose the latter.

This isn’t the first time Tesla has gotten in trouble with the NHTSA. Earlier this year, the NHTSA had questions for Tesla after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that a future software update would remove a driver monitoring safeguard from the company’s vehicles.

The safeguard requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel when using the Autopilot Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Similarly, last year, Tesla was forced to recall over 130,000 vehicles due to a CPU heating issue.

Ring reveals updated Battery Video Doorbell Plus offering head-to-toe view of visitors

It’s been a few years since Amazon released a new version of its battery-powered Video Doorbell, and right on queue, an updated version of the device, called the Battery Video Doorbell Plus, has arrived.

Essentially a newer version of the entry-level Video Doorbell (2nd-Gen), the latest doorbell can record 1536p video at a 150 x 150-degree viewing angle, allowing it to offer a complete head-to-toe view of visitors.

Ring also says that the Doorbell Plus’ battery life lasts three times longer than the 1st-Gen version, which, if you’re like me and still own the first-gen battery-powered doorbell, is a very good thing (the battery life is pretty bad and sometimes comes in at less than a few weeks with motion alerts off). Other features like colour night vision, live view, two-way talk and motion detection are back too. Further, just like previous versions of Amazon’s battery-powered smart Doorbell, the cell that powers it is removable and rechargeable.

According to a listing on Amazon’s website, the Ring Video Doorbell plus will launch in Canada on April 5th for $234.

Though I’ve moved most of my smart home devices over to Google’s Home app, I’m still stuck in Ring’s ecosystem because its battery-powered smart doorbell is one of the best out there (I also still use Ring’s water sensor for leaks in a few areas of my home). As much as I’d like to switch to Google’s Nest Doorbell, it suffers from severe battery drain issues as soon as the temperature drops below zero.

Given I’m using an old Ring Video Doorbell that’s suffering from camera issues, I’m strongly considering picking up the Video Doorbell Plus next month.

All Google One subscription tiers now get VPN access

Google One subscribers who aren’t on the service’s ‘Premium’ tier will get access to Google’s VPN service.

The search giant announced in a blog post that the VPN will be available to all Google One subscribers, even though on the company’s $2.79/mo ‘Basic’ plan. Previously, you needed to subscribe to the $13.99/mo Premium tier to get VPN access.

The change applies to all countries where Google VPN is available, which includes Canada. You can find a full list here. To access Google VPN, you’ll need to download the Google One app from the app store on your Android smartphone or iPhone. At the time of writing, I didn’t have access to the VPN despite being subscribed to the Standard plan. Google says the feature will roll out “over the next few weeks.”

It’s worth noting that Pixel 7 and 7 Pro owners still get access to Google VPN for free without needing to subscribe to Google One. While that’s good for Pixel owners, I also imagine most Pixel owners subscribe to Google One, so the VPN benefit is basically moot now.

Google also announced One subscriber in the U.S. can get a feature called ‘Dark web report.’ This can scan the dark web for your personal information and warn you if your information was compromised, though you need to provide the info to Google first so it can look for it. It remains to be seen if this expands to more locations in the future.

In Canada, Google one starts at $2.79/mo and goes all the way up to $35.99/mo:

  • Basic (100GB) – $2.79/mo | 27.99/year
  • Standard (200GB) – $3.99/mo | $39.99/year
    Premium (2TB) – $13.99/mo | $139.99/year
    Premium (5TB) – $35.99/mo | $359.99/year

CRTC’s decision to review internet competition met with positive reactions

Independent internet service provider TekSavvy is welcoming the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) decision to investigate internet competition and lower some wholesale rates

“The CRTC appears to understand that previous decisions have decimated the competitive market for internet services and led to higher prices for consumers,” Andy Kaplan-Myrth, TekSavvy’s vice president of regulatory and carrier affairs, said.

“While additional interim rate reductions are required to have a meaningful impact, we are pleased to see a proper focus and fast-track toward more competition and better prices.”

The Commission is examining wholesale rates smaller companies pay to larger providers to access their networks.

TekSavvy said a number of larger companies acquired independent players, pointing to policies under the CRTC’s “former leadership,” and emergency action is needed.

Bell has acquired Distributel and EBOX. Telus took over Start.ca and Altima, while Cogeco purchased Oxio last month.

Paul Andersen, Chair of the Canadian Network Operators of Canada (CNOC), tweeted the Commission has finally taken an approach to address a wholesale regime that “was not prompting competition for consumers.”

CRTC Chair Vicky Eatrides promised to revamp the internet pricing model when she took over as the head of the CRTC. “It’s a top priority for the organization because what we’ve done is not working,” Eatrides told MobileSyrup in January.

The action also follows the policy direction Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada issued last month, directing the CRTC to operate a wholesale internet framework with reasonable rates.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne believes the policy direction played a role in the CRTC’s review.

“I think the new directive is paying off for Canadians,” Champagne said Wednesday

“We’ve been asking the CRTC to make sure that prices go down, that we have more competition, and that’s one of the tools in the toolbox to make sure that we have better prices for Canadians.”

Google exec admits what we all knew: Stadia shouldn’t have been its own platform

A Google executive has acknowledged that the company took the wrong approach with its Stadia game streaming technology.

Speaking to Axios, Jack Buser, former director of games at Stadia and current director of Game Industry solutions at Google Cloud, reflected Google’s former and current cloud ambitions. With Stadia having shut down in January, Google has been looking to use its cloud services in different ways.

“It was at that moment when we basically had to make decisions about Stadia that we realized that, at Google Cloud, we are at our best when we’re helping other people build this stuff, not necessarily building it ourselves,” said Buser of Google’s decision to shutter Stadia. When Google originally announced Stadia’s shutdown last October, Stadia boss Phil Harrison simply said the platform “[hadn’t] gained the traction with users that we expected” without providing any further insight.

Therefore, it’s interesting to see Buser be a bit more candid about the mistakes Google made with Stadia. Indeed, many had criticized Stadia for being a platform with a lack of compelling games, features and pricing options, while game makers hesitated to embrace it due to Google’s penchant for killing its own platforms.

Instead, Google saw some success in licencing Stadia’s core tech. Whether it was Bungie leveraging the tech for remote work on Destiny 2 during the pandemic, Capcom offering an in-browser Resident Evil Village demo or AT&T’s U.S. customers being able to stream Batman: Arkham Knight, Google has found other uses for Stadia.

While Buser told Axios that these streaming options are no longer offered following Stadia’s shutdown, he noted that the company now has an updated Google Cloud bundle that offers new solutions for companies running their live service games. So far, Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed), Niantic (Pokémon Go) and game engine company Unity have come on as active clients. Given all of the issues online games can face, Google is positioning its services as a way for companies to mitigate risks associated with investing in their own tech by using Google’s own massive Cloud platform.

Google is rolling out the expanded Google Cloud suite now ahead of the Game Developers Conference later this month to entice more companies to come aboard. Overall, Buser says Google is “committed” to the industry despite Stadia’s failure.

Rogers offering Fido customers special $69.99/mo 1.5Gbps internet plan

Rogers is offering some Fido customers (including myself) an exclusive deal on Rogers Ignire Internet.

Per an email I received from Fido, the offer includes 1.5 Gigabit internet for $69.99/mo for 24 months. The price includes a $55/mo credit, and the price would go up to $124.99 after the two-year discount period. Rogers advertises this as $1,320 in savings over two years.

The Ignite plan in question offers download and upload speeds of up to 1.5Gbps, along with unlimited use.

Rogers Ignite internet offer for Fido customers.

Digging into the fine print for the offer, it’s available until April 22, 2023 to “eligible existing customers where access/technology permits.” Moreover, the fine print warns that the credit will apply toward the current price during the promotional period, and that price may increase during the promo period.

There’s also a $39 ‘Ignite Express Setup Fee,’ but the fine print warns of an additional “$110 Pro Install Add-On fee” that applies to fibre-to-the-home addresses.

To claim the offer, eligible customers have to call the number provided in the email. If you’re with Fido, keep an eye out for a similar offer landing in your inbox.

New Samsung store within Fortnite shows off the Galaxy S23 series

Samsung and Fortnite are no strangers. Back in 2018, the South Korea-based company gave owners of the Note 9 or the Tab S4 a cool-looking Galaxy-themed skin.

Later in 2019, the company awarded those who pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10e smartphones a special K-pop star Fortnite skin. The company has also held exclusive Fortnite-themed events in the U.S.

Now, Samsung has again partnered with Fortnite to bring the Galaxy S23 flagship devices to the Fortnite metaverse, allowing players to interact with different Samsung devices in-game. The metaverse is aptly named the Samsung SmartCity store, within a Samsung Island.

Players can access the Samsung Island using the code 8526-6648-9508 and participate in the Fun Game Quest, a hide-and-seek type of game where each round, players must find Galaxy S23 devices across the map and keep them. According to Samsung Latin America’s marketing director, channels in the metaverse need to be continuously updated, and the partnership with Fortnite is allowing the company to connect with great speed, messages, products, and people, with a high degree of immersion.

Samsung’s partnership with Fortnite is a strategic move to engage younger audiences and display the company’s latest technology. By creating a unique platform within Fortnite, Samsung is providing users with an immersive experience that offers a glimpse into current and future technology from the company.
