Wear the Xbox 360 on your feet with Xbox and Adidas’ new sneaker

Xbox and Adidas have unveiled the first of the companies’ 20th-anniversary sneaker collection. The shoe marks the very first Xbox-themed sneaker to release in North America.

The Xbox 360 Forum Mid features a myriad of tributes and easter eggs designed to celebrate the history of the Xbox. The kicks include the Xbox 360’s signature white, silver, and green colour scheme. Eagle-eyed fans will also notice the 360 disk tray decal on the shoe’s strap and references to the console’s removable hard drive and air vents on the heel.

The Forum Mids are laced white with four additional pairs of laces themed after the different colours of the face buttons on the 360’s controller.

The limited release will be available for purchase in both Canada and the U.S. on November 4th at 10pm ET/7pm PT on adidas.ca.

Also, as a part of the ‘Always Played In. Never Played Out’ initiative, Xbox faithful can check ‘In Queue.’ In Queue works like a virtual reveal experience to celebrate and aims to relive what Microsoft calls “the golden age of gaming: the launch of the Xbox 360.” The digital trip down memory lane can be seen at neverplayedout.net.

These shoes are the first of a larger partnership between Xbox and Adidas.

Users report Starlink delivery delays post updating service location

Several customers who pre-ordered SpaceX’s Starlink broadband are complaining that making minor alterations to their service location on the Starlink website map caused their delivery dates to be pushed back by a year or more, as first reported first by Ars Technica.

“I moved it from the end of my driveway to my house this morning and just looked back, and it had changed to 2022-2023. Bullshit! Damn it! I’ve been waiting since Feb,” commented ‘BrdwyBabe13’ on a cautioning Reddit post about the issue.

Judging by the complaints, it appears as though people pinpointing their house with the newly visible map tool available to those who pre-ordered the service, are being pushed way back in line.

“I moved the dot a few feet last night and wham! Went from late 2021 to sometime in 2023!😭😭😭 I didn’t sleep all night! Why? Why did I do it? I just can’t believe I’ve screwed us out of internet for two more years! Omg I suck,” wrote ‘3-HUGGER’ in the same Reddit thread.

This kind of pre-order delay with Starlink isn’t a new problem. The fact that the location map is now more prominently visible is causing more people to experiment with it, and they end up at the back of the queue with the slightest of change to the pinned location.

SpaceX hasn’t done much to alleviate the confusion. Several users have reported the issue to Starlink to no avail.

Crave has a new ‘KitKat Comedy Collection’ featuring Fresh Prince, Friends and more

Have you ever spent time on Crave and thought “something is missing?” Although there are some genuinely good titles on the streaming service, like HBO’s Succession, did you ever feel like you wanted more from the service besides universal 4K support and a better bitrate?

If that applies to you, then the answer to your Crave problems might be KitKat! At least, that’s what Bell seems to have in mind.

The company has launched a new sponsored ‘KitKat Collection’ on Crave that features more than a dozen comedy titles. “Satisfy your entertainment cravings with The KitKat Comedy Collection,” writes Bell. “An assortment of movies and tv shows curated by Crave. Have a well-deserved break and a laugh after work, brought to you by KitKat.”

The assortment of content includes the following 15 comedy shows and movies:

  • Adorableness
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • Corner Gas
  • Corner Gas Animated
  • Daria
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • Frasier
  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion
  • Friends
  • Friends: The Reunion
  • Jann
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks
  • Superintelligence
  • Wellington Paranormal

Amusingly, there’s a 16th Crave “title” listed in the collection, “The KitKat Comedy Collection,” which is simply a 15-second ad for KitKat and Crave. In other words, it’s a perfect companion to classics like The Fresh PrinceFriends and Frasier.

The only thing that could make Will Smith and James Avery’s iconic emotional scene from “Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse” better, after all, is a KitKat.

You can finally see Instagram photos on Twitter

Instagram has announced that users can now preview photos when posting a link on Twitter.

The photo-sharing platform revealed the news with a tweet from its official Twitter account. Now when you share an Instagram link a Twitter card will appear featuring the photo shared, rather than an ugly clickable link.

The two social media giants have been feuding for years since native Instagram integration was removed from Twitter in 2012. This shift comes as Instagram parent company Facebook makes sweeping changes, including a complete rebrand.

It’s unknown whether Facebook’s recent shake up had anything to with this change or if it was just something that had been in the works for quite some time. Either way, users of both platforms will be all over this new feature.

Microphone mute switch coming to Windows 11 taskbar soon

As promised, Microsoft is close to rolling out a microphone mute switch to Windows 11. The latest dev channel build for the recently released operating system has finally added the mic switch to the Taskbar.

This suggests that the button will soon ship to all versions of Windows 11. If you can’t wait for the update, Microsoft also offers a tool app called PowerToys with a similar feature and other cool extras.

How the new button works

Once the actual button does roll out, it will be located next to the Wi-Fi and volume icons in the bottom right of the Taskbar.

You can click on it to mute/unmute your mic or see what apps are accessing your microphone currently. That said, the beta version only works with Microsoft Teams currently and it looks like it’s going to be up to individual developers to add support for the feature. With this in mind, I wouldn’t expect it to work in Google Meet or Zoom at launch.

This is similar to how macOS, iOS and Android all handle microphone access now. If an app is using your mic, you’ll see a small orange or green dot along the top of your screen on these platforms. The other major platforms also display a notification of some kind of they’re using your camera too. As it stands right now, Windows doesn’t offer a similar feature.

Some Alberta, B.C. customers getting $70/mo 1Gbps internet from Telus

If you live in Alberta or B.C., you might have some luck getting a pretty decent Telus internet deal.

According to a post on RedFlagDeals (RFD) from ‘greghuston,’ those who live in neighbourhoods getting access to Telus’ ‘PureFibre’ internet might be able to get a 1Gbps plan for $70/month on a two-year term.

In the post, greghuston explains that they got Telus’ 1Gbps PureFibre internet, equipment, a $150 bill credit and unlimited data all for $70/mo plus tax. They go on to note that the deal appears to be only available for new customers and that they got it via a special deal from a rep, not directly through Telus.

Other RFD users chimed in to note that it’s common to get special offers from third-party reps since Telus has several companies working on expanding PureFibre.

Greghuston later notes that their first statement from Telus included a $200 credit and had the correct $70/mo price.

Overall, it definitely sounds like there’s a strong ‘your mileage may vary’ element here, but anyone lucky enough to get an offer like this may want to take it. Looking at Telus’ website right now, there’s an offer for PureFibre 1Gbps internet starting at $89/mo (including a $10 discount for being a Telus or Koodo mobility customer) and a $50 bill credit for online orders. $70/mo with a $200 bill credit is quite a bit better.

You can check out the RFD thread here for more information. Alternatively, you can view Telus’ website here.

Canadian telecoms need to do more to teach Canadians about 5G: study

A new ConsumerLab report from Ericsson, one of the main providers of 5G network equipment in North America, says Canadian telecom companies need to do more to educate Canadians about 5G.

To start, ConsumerLab gathered data in what it class “the biggest-ever 5G consumer study.” The study represents the opinions of 1.3 billion smartphone users, which includes 22 million smartphone users in Canada and 220 million 5G users globally.

ConsumerLab also set the stage for 5G in Canada, noting that the country is still “early in 5G adoption” with “currently more than 500,000 5G devices already in the hands of Canadians.”

“By the end of 2023, 5G could penetrate the majority of existing coverage, providing an amazing opportunity for Canadians,” says ConsumerLab.

However, ConsumerLab also found that Canadians are confused about 5G, writing that 20 percent of Canadians with a 5G-ready phone still use a 4G subscription. Additionally, 15 percent of people using a 4G smartphone claim they’re connected to a 5G network.

ConsumerLab lays the blame on telecom companies for not doing enough to differentiate 4G and 5G subscriptions. While this sort of makes sense, Bell, Rogers and Telus also say on their respective websites that plans include 5G access. I’d argue the bigger culprit is that 5G effectively doesn’t exist in a meaningful way in Canada, and won’t until carriers start rolling out access to newly acquired 3,500MHz spectrum.

A small personal anecdote here is that my limited testing of Bell’s 5G network in Whitby, Ontario revealed it to be a 4G LTE connection despite using a 5G phone and having the ‘5G’ symbol in the status bar (running the same test again today on my Pixel 6 shows I’m still actually connected to Bell’s 4G network).

ConsumerLab goes on to say that half of 4G users think 5G is “either rarely available or available less than 30 percent of the time.” Increasing the availability of 5G would go a long way to changing that perception.

Finally, ConsumerLab says that a quarter of smartphone users in Canada expect their provider to switch to 5G, or will wait at most six months before moving to a provider that does. ConsumerLab also said half of Canadian smartphone users would be willing to pay at least $10 more per month for 5G services.

I’m not so sure about that last part, however. Canadians already pay incredibly high rates for internet and wireless service, and most people would like to see their bills come down, not increase. Maybe that will change once actual 5G becomes more readily available, but until then, I’d save that extra $10.

Those interested can check out the full ConsumerLab report here.
