Ford begins selling electric motors, shows off vintage EV truck

To help vintage car owners electrify their vehicles, Ford has started selling a new electric crate motor that can be used to modernize vintage rides.

The legacy automaker is selling this little motor for $3,900 USD (roughly $4,800 CAD). The motor doesn’t come with a battery or any of the other parts you’d need to actually fully convert a standard car, however. Still, it’s a powerful little engine with 317ft/lbs of torque.

This isn’t the only way to do an electric conversion though. For example, in late 2020, GM released a similar type of motor, and I’d expect more companies to jump into the conversation market as the world slowly switches to electric vehicles.

If you’re interested in this project, Ford is demoing it in a stunning looking 1978 Ford F100 that’s not only sporting two of the company’s new motors, but also a Mustang Mach-E battery pack and touch screen display.

Amazon reveals Alexa-enabled hockey puck-sized Air Quality Monitor

Amazon has revealed a new $89.99 Smart Air Quality Monitor shaped like a small white hockey puck.

The Alexa-compatible indoor air quality monitor is capable of monitoring the following: particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity and temperature. A small LED light on the device indicates air quality, and a more comprehensive report is available through Amazon’s Alexa app.

Other features include smartphone notifications or Echo device announcements related to air quality and suggestions for how to improve the air in your space. You can also set up triggers through Alexa Routines for devices like smart ceiling fans, thermostats or blinds.

What separates Amazon’s Air Quality Monitor from the competition is its relatively low $90 price tag. In comparison, Dyson’s various air purifiers start at $399.99, though these devices actually purify the air and don’t just monitor it.

Amazon also sells its Air Quality Monitor bundles with the Echo Dot 4th-gen and the Echo Show 2nd-gen for $159.98 and $189.98, respectively. The online retail giant’s Smart Air Quality Monitor is currently available for pre-order now in Canada for $89.99 with a December 8th, 2021 release date.

Google to provide one more Pixel 3/3 XL update in early 2022

Although Google’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL smartphones officially won’t get any more “guaranteed” Android upgrades or security updates from Google, the search giant has promised one more big update slated for early next year.

Google told 9to5Google that one more Pixel 3 series update was coming sometime in the first quarter of 2022. Although it’s not clear what all will be included, the update will probably consist of bug fixes and other important security updates. Further, the Q1 timing is interesting given that Google will be actively testing Android 12L at that time.

While those wanting to hold onto their Pixel 3 devices a little longer — looking at you, Hawkeye — will likely be pleasantly surprised by the news, it’s worth noting that Google has done this before. For example, when the Pixel 2 and 2 XL reached the end of official software support, Google skipped a November patch and rolled out a larger patch in December.

For those sporting a Pixel 3a or 3a XL, Google lists the phones will get “guaranteed” updates until May 2022. As with other Pixels, however, that doesn’t mean Google won’t offer any updates past that point — they’re just not guaranteed.

Those interested in learning more about how long Google promises support for its Pixel phones can check out this support page. After the Pixel 3a and 3a XL lose support in May, the Pixel 4 series will be the next to lose support in October 2022.

This video explains how you can mod your iPhone to feature USB-C port

Ken Pillonel’s ‘World’s First USB-C’ iPhone video has been doing rounds. And why wouldn’t it? Pillonel integrated a working USB-C port to the iPhone X, an addition that iPhone users have been longing for.

While the procedure isn’t something that the average user will be able to handle themself, given Pillonel has a Master’s degree in robotics and knows what he’s doing, he has released a second video detailing the process and how you, too, maybe, can attempt to turn your iPhone into a UBS-C device.

The 13-minute video walks you through the whole process, from proof of concept to getting the components and parts ready. Pillonel has also released the open-source project on Github and is now auctioning off the original USB-C iPhone he modified on eBay. At the time of writing, the listing has already has a $4,950 ($6,145 CAD) current bid.

The open-source initiative will help others expand on Pillonel’s efforts, whether by creating unique USB-C iPhone X versions or applying the same concept to other iPhones models. It’s worth noting that even with the walkthrough video and the project being available on Github, the process isn’t easy and requires a level of expertise.

Further, any unauthorized modifications will void the warranty on your iPhone. With that being said, Pillonel intends to improve the USB-C iPhone design in the future, with ambitions to support faster charging, waterproofing, and possibly using USB-C accessories.

Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong is reportedly getting his own ‘Mario’ movie spin-off

In September, Nintendo made the absolutely hilarious announcement that Vancouver’s own Seth Rogen will voice Donkey Kong in next year’s Mario movie, among other bizarre casting choices.

Now, it’s looking like the Canadian funnyman will reprise the role in his own spin-off film.

Movie news site Giant Freakin Robot, which has a track record of scoops, reports that a Rogen-led spin-off is “currently in development” at Illumination. The Santa Monica-based animation studio is also working on the untitled Mario animated film that’s set to hit theatres in December 2022.

Plot details weren’t provided, but Giant Freakin Robot said some of Rogen’s fellow Mario castmembers — which include the likes of Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi — may make an appearance. Comedian Fred Armisen, who’s confirmed to be voicing Cranky Kong in the Mario movie, seems like another safe bet. Hopefully, Brampton, Ontario’s own Michael Cera voices Diddy Kong and Jonah Hill plays King K. Rool for a fun Superbad reunion.

Notably, Giant Freaking Robot is corroborating an unrelated May report from reliable Nintendo insider Zippo, who claimed at the time that Donkey Kong is Nintendo’s next character to get a major multimedia push beyond games. So far, we know that this includes an expansion to the Super Nintendo World theme park.

For now, though, all we have to go off is funny internet videos about Rogen as the iconic Nintendo ape.

Koodo, Fido, Virgin bring back $50/10GB offer and new ‘Starter’ plans

Koodo, Fido and Virgin Plus (flanker brands for Telus, Rogers and Bell respectively) have had $50/10GB plans available on and off over the last few months. Well, the three carriers are back to ‘on’ with the $50/10GB offer, but not a whole lot else.

Koodo and Virgin both surprisingly only offer four plans right now, with a few exceptions. First, it’s four plans if you choose to bring your own phone — some plans aren’t available to customers who choose to get a phone on contract. The other exception is an expanded list of ‘Starter Plans’ with plenty of options that also aren’t available if you want to get a phone (I’ll dig into these more below).

Fido’s plan set-up is a little different, with options across ‘Data, Talk & Text,’ ‘Talk & Text’ and ‘Basic’ categories. Some of these match the ‘Starter’ plans offered by Koodo and Virgin and, like Koodo and Virgin, Fido restricts these options for those looking to get a phone.

Below I’ll list out all the plans in order from cheapest to most expensive, including labels to show which categories these fall into (‘Starter’ for Starter plans, ‘Promo’ for offers listed as promotional and no label for the regular plans). Note that these prices are shown for Ontario locations and should be the same in some provinces, but others (for example, Quebec and Manitoba) often have different prices.

  • $15/mo 250MB data at 3G speed with 100 Canada-wide minutes (Koodo Starter, Fido Basic, Virgin Starter)
  • $28/mo 1GB data at 4G speed with pay-per-use minutes (Virgin Starter)
  • $30/mo pay-per-use data with unlimited minutes (Koodo, Fido ‘Talk & Text,’ Virgin)
  • $35/mo 3GB data at 3G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Starter, Fido Basic, Virgin Starter)
  • $38/mo 2GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Starter, Fido, Virgin Starter [note: costs $37.50/mo])
  • $41/mo 4GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Starter, Fido, Virgin Starter [note: costs $41.25/mo])
  • $45/mo 6GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Starter, Fido, Virgin Starter)
  • $50/mo 10GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Promo, Fido, Virgin)
  • $55/mo 12GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo Promo, Fido, Virgin)
  • $70/mo 15GB data at 4G speed with unlimited minutes (Koodo, Fido, Virgin)

All of the above plans include messaging services.

Starter plans now include options that meet government price reduction targets

It’s worth noting that the Starter plans category isn’t exactly new — Koodo, Fido and Virgin rolled out the category alongside the CRTC-mandated low-cost plans in July. Since then, however, it looks like the three flanker brands have expanded the category with plans beyond what was mandated by the CRTC, such as options that meet the reduced wireless price targets set by the federal government.

Namely, the new $38/2GB plan almost meets the $37.50/mo 2GB target set by the government (Virgin actually meets the $37.50 price target). Similarly, the $41/mo 4GB plan comes in just a few cents lower than the $41.25/mo government target for 4GB plans.

Bell announced in September that Virgin would add plans meeting the government targets in October, but I’m not sure when Fido and Koodo added their versions of those plans.

While great to see the flanker brands offer plans that meet these targets, it’s frustrating that carriers also blocked these plans for people who want to get a phone. It’s especially annoying when you consider that most carriers offer a device financing model that separates the cost of the phone from your monthly plan.

Telus, Rogers and Bell, however, do not meet these targets.

You can check out the plans at the linked pages below:

macOS Monterey using up insane amounts of RAM with new bug

If you’ve recently upgraded your Mac to macOS Monterey, you might notice some apps using ridiculous amounts of RAM.

Some users are reporting apps like Firefox and Control Centre using between 20GB and 70GB, according to MacRumors. In our testing, when I used Final Cut Pro X on the new MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM, there was a point where it boosted all the way up to 67GB of RAM usage.

My first reaction was to assume that the app was trying to use SSD space as a substitute for RAM to push my files around.

I’m not so sure now, and perhaps the RAM usage wasn’t designed to boost up that high. It only happened to me once, but MacRumors says that affected users quickly ramp up RAM usage again after restarting their computer.

With all of this in mind, if you have a Mac with only 16GB of RAM, it might be better to wait a few more days or weeks before updating to Monterey to make sure that you don’t run into this issue.

Rogers argues against calls to delay CRTC hearing about Shaw acquisition

Rogers Communications wants an upcoming regulatory hearing about its proposed acquisition of Shaw to move forward as planned despite the ongoing dispute between Rogers family members over control of the company.

As reported by The Globe and Mail, Rogers (the company) submitted a regulatory filing to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Tuesday. The filing argued against calls to delay the November 22nd hearing from advocacy groups and rival telecom companies.

The Globe reports that two advocacy groups and BCE filed delay requests on Monday, while Telus followed suit on Tuesday — all sought to delay the regulatory hearing until the uncertainty around who controlled Rogers Communications was resolved.

As a quick refresher, Edward Rogers — son of the late Ted Rogers, who founded the company — is locked in a dispute with his mother Loretta Rogers and sisters Martha Rogers and Melinda Rogers-Hixon over the company’s board. Edward had attempted to oust CEO Joe Natale and replace him with former chief financial officer Tony Staffieri. However, after a butt-dial allegedly revealed the scheme to Natale, Edward was voted out as the board chair.

While no longer chairperson, Edward was still on the board as a director and promptly announced plans to remove several members (including the new chair) from the board and replace them, which effectively brings us up to date with the Rogers family now feuding in a Vancouver courtroom over whether Edward legally can replace the board. A decision is expected from the judge on Friday.

Those interested can read a complete timeline here.

Rogers argues that the family is “aligned” on the importance of the Shaw deal

With all that chaos going on, it’s no surprise that some have questioned whether to move forward with a hearing about an acquisition valued at $26 billion. Arguments for the delay include that it’s unclear which of the two boards currently has the authority to oversee the company’s affairs. Another argument is that the outcome could lead to changes in the Rogers executive team and it’s unclear if new executives would respect assurances in the proposed Shaw deal made by the old team.

Rogers countered those arguments in its filing, saying that it and Shaw’s “commitment to this transaction has never wavered.” Additionally, Rogers said any commitments made by the company will be honoured “regardless of any changes to the directors and officers that may occur in the future.”

It’s worth noting, however, that the Rogers company is embroiled in a lawsuit with Quebecor’s Vidéotron over an alleged breach of the companies’ shared network agreement. Vidéotron claimed in the lawsuit that a new chief technology officer (CTO) who disliked the agreement joined Rogers in 2018 and exacerbated issues.

Rogers Communications also argued in its CRTC filing that delaying the hearing would lead to delays in the CRTC’s review of the deal and create more “uncertainty in the marketplace.”

“The Rogers family and Rogers are aligned on the importance of this transaction. They fully support the application that Rogers has filed with the commission. They have stated this publicly multiple times,” Rogers said in the filing.

A spokesperson for the CRTC told The Globe that it was reviewing the requests for a delay.
