Adobe rolls out Photoshop for the web and new AI features

At Adobe’s annual two-day Max event the company announced several significant Photoshop updates.

If you’re interested in checking out what Adobe has in store for its other apps and tools, you can check out its blog post.

Photoshop updates

The current trend in the photo editing space are AI-based enhancements that make altering images significantly easier than ever. Adobe’s latest slate of Photoshop updates helps it keep up with all of these upstarts, and it makes the app more accessible, albeit in a more scaled-back form.

The first update to Photoshop worth talking about is a new auto-select highlight tool called the ‘Hover Auto-masking Object Selection tool.’ While the name might be a bit long, the feature works in real-time and selects what it thinks the object is that your mouse is hovering over. To auto-select an item currently, you need to choose it and then see what the AI thinks you wanted. This new preview mode should take a lot of time-consuming guesswork out of using auto-select.

As cool as this feature is, I’m interested to see how well it works across different devices. For example, Photoshop’s AI features are generally pretty resource-intensive and don’t often work in a snap for me on my Ryzen 7 3800x-powered desktop. That said, maybe Adobe has done some work to make things smoother with the new update.

Another feature that takes advantage of AI is called ‘Mask all objects’ that automatically creates a mask for every object that its AI defines in the photo.

Other improvements include support for Apple’s Pro Display XDR, improving compatibility with Apple’s high-end display or the new MacBook Pro. You can learn about setting up an HDR workspace on an Apple computer here.

If you take a lot of smartphone pictures or just wish your photo had better background blur, Adobe is also improving its AI when it comes to adding realistic background blur to images. The company says the one way it’s making this feel more realistic is by giving people the option to add grain to their blur.

You can check out the rest of the Photoshop updates by reading Adobe’s blog post.

Photoshop comes to the web (in beta)

Adobe says that now that it’s learned more about developing cloud storage for PSD files, ther’s a new web app version of Photoshop.

While it’s a little more limited than the default version available on PC, it appears to add tools like ‘Quick Selection,’ the ‘Magic Wand, ‘ and the ‘Healing Brush’ to this wildly accessible version of the powerful app. Now that the groundwork has been laid for a web version of Photoshop, it’s likely only a matter of time before it expands.

I’m sure that this version of Photoshop won’t replace my desktop client any time soon, but it’s exciting to see even powerful apps like Photoshop experiment in the web app space. During the early days of the pandemic, I spent a lot of time testing out Chrome OS devices and what I learned was that while they’re pretty awesome, they’re still missing a lot of apps.

For me, one of the key missing apps was a really comparable alternative to Photoshop. While there are some Chrome OS photo editing apps that got the job done, I really missed Adobe’s classic app. Hopefully the new web-based beta can fill this void.

Ontario workers could soon be able to ignore their boss’ email post work hours

Working from home sure has its benefits, but it’s easy to lose track of your social life when your home becomes your office.

Ontario is considering new legislation that aims to encourage workers to disconnect from their work tasks to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

On Monday, Labour Minister Monte McNaughton revealed the planned legislative changes, stating that the bill aims to create an atmosphere where talented and innovative people are encouraged to work in Ontario.

According to McNaughton, the legislation would not only encourage a healthy work-life balance in the province but would also ban businesses from putting “unfair non-compete agreements” in place that limit future job prospects and limit wage growth.

Companies with 25 or more employees would be required to adopt disconnecting-from-work policies, which might include expectations regarding email response time and encouraging employees to switch on out-of-office alerts when they are not working.

“When you’re off the clock. You’re off the clock,” said McNaughton. “Everyone should be able to unplug at the end of their work day because people are more than their jobs, they are mums and dads, volunteers for local charities, members of faith communities, and so much more.”

The law will be the first of this type in Canada if it were to pass.

Montreal-based Illogika making first official game based on A Quiet Place

Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Saber Interactive has announced the first-ever official video game based on Paramount’s acclaimed A Quiet Place films.

Montreal-based Illogika, a studio that includes veterans of the Rainbow Six and Far Cry franchises, is developing the game, which is simply titled A Quiet Place.

According to Saber, A Quiet Place will be a single-player, “story-driven horror adventure.” Specifically, Saber says the game will feature an “original story that captures the compelling suspense, emotion and drama for which the series is famous,” suggesting that it won’t be tied to the characters or plot of John Krasinski’s two A Quiet Place films.

No further details beyond a general 2022 release window were revealed. Saber teased that more information on the game is expected to come later this year. Given that there are only two months left in 2021, it’s possible that a reveal trailer will come at The Game Awards. Produced by Canada’s own Geoff Keighley, this year’s ceremony will be held on December 9th.

The Illogika game is Paramount’s latest effort to grow the universe of A Quiet Place. Following the release of the second film in May, the studio is also developing a spin-off based on a concept from Krasinski. Series star Emily Blunt has also said that Krasinski has an idea for a potential A Quiet Place — Part III.

Nintendo’s Switch Online N64 games are a buggy mess

Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 games suffer from input lag, sound delays, frame rate problems and wonky controller layouts.

A quick glance at the popular gaming forum ResetEra reveals several posts focused on the issues. There are also reports across Twitter surrounding input lag issues, particularly with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

There are even graphical glitches in several games tied to fog, draw distances and water textures, as well as other weird quirks, including Mario Kart 64 thinking a Controller Pak is required to save time trial data.

If these problems were tied to a free emulator and ROM files, they’d be far easier to swallow. However, Switch Online Expansion Pack games are official emulations offered by Nintendo and at a pretty expensive cost, too. Nintendo’s new ‘Expansion Pack‘ online tier costs $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership (one account) or $99.99 for a 12-month Family Membership (up to eight accounts).

Notable launch N64 titles include Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Yoshi’s Story, Mario Tennis 64, Super Mario 64 and more. Along with N64 titles, the subscription also includes access to Sega Genesis games like Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Contra: Hard Crops, Shining Force and more. It’s unclear if Sega Genesis titles also suffer from emulation issues.

It’s unclear what the source of the poor N64 game performance is, but it seems to be tied to shoddy, lazy emulation and the fact that these are likely ports of the Wii U Virtual Console versions of games. Hopefully, these are issues Nintendo can fix because right now, the additional Switch Online cost to access N64 titles isn’t worth it.

I’ve yet to test out N64 Expansion pack titles, but with these issues in mind, I think I’ll likely wait to see if Nintendo irons out the issues. That said, I do have a Switch N64 controller on order, so I’ll probably end up checking them out anyways.

Qualcomm unveils four new mobile platforms with an emphasis on 5G

Qualcomm is introducing four new mobile platforms in its Snapdragon 7, 6 and 4 series that it says will increase performance across high-, mid-, and entry-tier smartphones.

According to Qualcomm, the new 5G and 4G mobile platforms boost performance and capabilities, giving OEMs alternatives to fulfil demand in a time of massive chip shortage.

Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G Mobile Platform

The successor to the 778G, the 778G Plus takes its Kyro 670 CPU and Adreno 642L GPU performance one step further with the 6th-gen Qualcomm AI engine. It includes a Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System that supports both mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G networks in SA and NSA modes, TDD, FDD and with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

The platform also includes an ultra-efficient 6nm process for smooth performance that conserves battery along with ‘Quick Charge 4+’ for fast charging.

On the camera side of things, the 778G Plus uses the Qualcomm Spectra 570L Image Signal Processor, which is capable of speeds up to 2 gigapixels per second, allowing it to capture 4K video, up to 192 megapixel photos, slow-mo video capture at 720p @ 240 FPS and enhanced AI-based auto-focus and auto-exposure.

Snapdragon 695 5G Mobile Platform

The mid-tier Snapdragon 695 5G also supports both mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G networks thanks to the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF System. According to Qualcomm, the new platform, when compared to the Snapdragon 690, has up to 30 percent faster graphic rendering with the Adreno 619 GPU and 15 percent better CPU performance with the Kryo 660 CPU, allowing for immersive gaming, greater productivity and high-end photo and video capturing.

It includes the Qualcomm Spectra 346T Image Signal Processor, which supports up to 108-megapixel photos, 1080p Single Video Capture at 60 FPS and 720 p slow-motion video capture at 120 FPS.

On the display end, the platform can support devices with FHD+ (1080 x 2520) and HD+ (900 x 1600) screens at 120Hz along with Quick Charge4+ to fuel the power-hungry displays.

Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G Mobile Platform

  • Qualcomm says that over the past year, more than 85 announced and in-development devices use the Snapdragon 480 platform. With the upgraded 480 Plus platform, Qualcomm wants to help drive the adoption of 5G connectivity for “improved entertainment, communication, and productivity experiences for everyone.”

It includes a Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF System that supports both mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G networks in SA and NSA modes, TDD, FDD, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

The platform features a Qualcomm Kryo 460 CPU that delivers speeds of up to 2.2 GHz along with Qualcomm’s Adreno 619 GPU, which the company says is the fastest in the 4-series. 480 Plus also includes an ultra-efficient 8nm process for smooth performance and low battery usage, along with ‘Quick Charge 4+’ for fast charging.

It features a Qualcomm Spectra 345 Image Signal Processor with up to 64-megapixel photo capture, 1080p single video capture at 60 FPS and 720p slow-motion video capture at 120 FPS.

Snapdragon 680 4G Mobile Platform

The 680 is the only new 4G platform unveiled by Qualcomm. The company says the platform was designed for extensive multimedia playback, with unrivalled efficiency and long-lasting power. To put things in perspective, the platform supports Quick Charge 3.0 that can charge your device up to 50 percent in just 30 minutes which goes hand-in-hand with the Kryo 265 CPU designed for robust computing without draining power.

The platform can support devices with FHD+ (1080 x 2520) and HD+ (900 x 1600) screens at 90Hz. It features a Snapdragon X11 LTE Modem for reliable 4G LTE connectivity for entertainment and gaming. On the camera side, the 680 4G uses a Qualcomm Spectra 346 Image Signal Processor with up to 64-megapixel photo captures and can accommodate a 13+13+5 megapixel triple camera setup.
