Hydro Québec takes a stand against electricity theft for crypto mining

Hydro-Québec has halted electricity theft and fraud instances, which the corporation says was being used to mine cryptocurrency and estimates that it resulted in roughly two million dollars in damages.

According to the investigation, these theft and fraud events are linked to cryptocurrency mining activities carried out at three locations in the city of Québec and the Chaudière-Appalaches area. The activities have been ongoing since last spring, notably in the boroughs of Beauport and Saint-Damien-de-Buckland.

Hydro-Québec investigators coordinated with Sureté du Québec (provincial police) investigators on Friday, October 22nd, to conduct searches at two locations.

While no information about how electricity was being stolen was released, we suspect that the accused used the ‘cable hooking’ method to a point ahead of the energy meter, resulting in unmeasured energy consumption.

While mining cryptocurrency isn’t illegal in Canada, stealing electricity for higher profits definitely is. A case will be filed with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, who will decide whether or not to press criminal charges for power theft and fraud.

It is also currently unknown whether the accused individuals had small GPU-mining setups or a large farm full of ASIC Miners.

Apple’s new High Power mode is exclusive to the 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro

Apple’s latest 16-inch MacBook Pro (starting at $3,139) with the M1 Max chip has an exclusive feature that is not available on any other MacBook — High Power mode.

As shared by YouTuber Brian Tong, the High Power mode enables users to get a performance boost from their machines in intensive scenarios, such as video rendering or while colour grading an 8K ProRes video. On the flip side, High Power Mode may result in higher fan noise, implying that the mode allows the M1 Max CPU to operate at a hotter while ramping up fan speeds.

The new High Power Mode isn’t available on the 14-inch MacBook Pro, even when equipped with an M1 Max processor, or on any M1 Pro-equipped variants which might owe to a difference in internal thermals of the different laptops.

In Tong’s review of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, he exported a 90-minute Premiere Pro video in just seven minutes and eighteen seconds with the High Power Mode on. For comparison, it took Tong about sixteen extra seconds to export the same video with High Power Mode off. While not a big difference, it took Tong nineteen minutes to export the same video in a 2021 24-inch M1 iMac and about 37 minutes on a 2019 16-inch Intel MacBook Pro.

Tong also noted that when he tested High Power Mode, the bottom of the MacBook Pro felt much hotter to the touch than when he used it normally.

Privacy Commissioner’s office wasn’t consulted on Liberal online harm bill

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is claiming that the Liberal government never consulted with them when drafting a controversial new internet regulation bill that would require websites to delete harmful content on their platforms.

The National Post reports that according to an OPC spokesperson, the office “was not consulted by Canadian Heritage on this matter,” and was only provided with a briefing on the proposed legislation after explicitly requesting it.

This online harms bill — also known as Bill C-36 — is one of 10 pieces of legislation that Canada’s newly re-elected Liberal government promised to introduce in parliament within the party’s first 100 days back in office.

The bill was first announced in July as a technical paper, though any official parliamentary discussion on it was halted due to the 2021 federal election being called.

The paper proposes the creation of a “Digital Safety Commission” consisting of a digital safety commissioner, digital recourse council, and an advisory board.

The commission’s job would be to require websites — like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube — remove harmful and abusive content from their platforms within 24 hours, or face repercussions.

The proposed legislation identifies five categories of abusive and harmful content: terrorist content, content that incites violence, hate speech, child sexual exploitation content, and the non-consensual distribution of intimate images.

However, the specifics of the bill have many worried that the new commission, while seeking to protect Canadians, would simultaneously violate their privacy and constitutional rights.

As a result number of internet policy and legal advocacy groups have spoken out against the proposed legislation so far, including OpenMedia, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Ranking Digital Rights, the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, and the Citizen Lab.

Warner Bros. making Smash-esque fighter with Batman, Shaggy, Gandalf and more: report

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment may be working on its own Super Smash Bros.-inspired platform fighter.

Over the past few days, an unverified rumour hit Reddit regarding such a game with characters from many popular WB brands.

While that normally would be sketchy in and of itself, VentureBeat‘s Jeff Grubb, a credible source with a solid track record, took to Twitter to back up the leak. Other than refuting the leak’s claim that Mortal Kombat and Injustice developer NetherRealm is working on the WB crossover fighter, Grubb stated that the rumoured game is, indeed, “real.”

Grubb didn’t specifically say if any other parts of the leak are true or false, though. According to the rumour, a variety of iconic WB characters are set to join the rumoured game’s roster, including Batman (DC), Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings), Shaggy (Scooby-Doo), Mad Max (Mad Max), Fred Flinstone (The Flinstones), Tom & Jerry (Tom & Jerry) and Johnny Bravo (Johnny Bravo).

Interestingly, the rumour claims that the Wizarding World’s Harry Potter and Ron Weasley were also mentioned as part of the roster. However, the leaker noted that the rights for the Potter characters are “weird” — presumably due to creator J.K. Rowling maintaining control over the series — and conceded that they may have even been mentioned in jest.

The leaker also makes the rather interesting claim that the game was originally conceived due to all of the memes over the mega-powerful ‘Ultra Instinct Shaggy.’ Given that a family-friendly character like Shaggy wouldn’t make sense in a game like Mortal Kombat, WB instead reportedly came up with the idea of a Smash-like crossover where he and other characters could face off instead. This is especially credible since we already knew that Warner Bros. was paying close attention to the memes, as the company even added a nod to them in the opening titles of its Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms animated movie

Further, the leaker says the game is a ‘tag team’ fighter, which suggests some sort of synergy between characters. They said they didn’t have any more details, but this sounds similar to Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom series, which lets you switch between a party of characters on the fly. This added layer of strategy would, in theory, help the WB game stand out not only from Smash, but the other inspired titles that have been popping up, including, most recently, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

It’s worth noting that while the leaker didn’t suggest a title for the game, WB did file a trademark for a project called “Multiversus” last month. It remains to be seen whether that’s actually related to the rumoured crossover fighter, but it certainly sounds like a fitting title.

The leaker concluded their post by teasing that the WB game is just one of “at least two” other companies “with major IP” working on Smash-like games. This would make a lot of sense, given that Smash Bros. Ultimate became the best-selling fighting game of all time in 2019.

Meanwhile, properties like Fortnite and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have proven immensely popular by featuring their own major crossovers. Warner Bros. itself has also dabbled in this realm, be it through its ‘DC Extended Universe’ of superhero films, major DC characters appearing in Fortnite or even this year’s Space Jam: A New Legacy, which featured dozens of WB properties.

The company has not yet commented on the rumoured crossover fighter.

Rogers announces completion of its national 5G core rollout

Rogers reported today that it has completed the national rollout of its 5G standalone core network.

In a press release, the Toronto-based carrier announced that it had “completed its 5G standalone core network deployment nationally and is deploying its 5G standalone service coverage in major markets.”

Those major markets include the cities of Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

The company also shared that it achieved what it says is the “first 5G standalone device certification in Canada.”

The specific devices in question are the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro. Pixel 6 owners will be able to connect to Rogers’ 5G network using their devices, provided they live in a region where they’re eligible for service.

Rogers began rolling out its Ericsson-powered 5G standalone core network in December 2020.

The carrier’s last 5G network expansion announcement was on October 12th, and focused on the Quebec regions of Beaconsfield, Boucherville, Brossard, Dorval, Drummondville, Longueuil, Mascouche, Mont Tremblant, Saint-Constant, Saint-Lambert, and Terrebonne.

Court rejects Telus’ motion in spectrum auction case with Bell vs. Quebecor

The Federal Court has rejected a request from Telus that would have temporarily blocked Quebecor from receiving the wireless spectrum it purchased in Western Canada this past summer.

According to a press release, Telus’ motion for an interlocutory injunction — a court order to prevent a party from doing certain acts so long as a court case is ongoing — was not granted.

As a result, the Quebec-based telecom will be awarded the spectrum it bought, without having to wait until the case levied against it by Telus and Bell is resolved.

This news is the latest chapter in an ongoing legal battle initiated by Telus and Bell against Quebecor.

On August 26th, Bell — later joined by Telus — filed an application with the Federal Court of Appeal.

In the application, both parties argued that Quebecor should not have been legally allowed to make certain purchases at the government’s wildly lucrative summer 3500 MHz spectrum auction.

Specifically, the two telecom giants took issue with Quebecor’s decision to buy wireless spectrum in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia — i.e. regions where Vidéotron, which is owned by Quebecor, does not currently offer internet services.

In a statement celebrating the legal win, Quebecor dismissed the argument that it shouldn’t be allowed to purchase spectrum licenses in Western Canada as “anti-competitive”, and referred to Telus and Bell as “members of the oligopoly.”
