Your next Canadian hotel stay might include the services of Amazon’s Alexa

Canadian businesses can now access Alexa Smart Properties for Hospitality.

The program gives businesses in the hospitality field, including hotels and vacation rentals, the opportunity to add an Amazon Echo to rooms for guests to use.

This makes it easier for guests to request a variety of services — whether that be housekeeping or ordering room service. Hotels can also configure Alexa to control in-room settings, such as thermostats, lights, and blinds.

“Alexa Smart Properties for Hospitality makes your hotel stay a little more like being at home and gives hospitality providers new ways to create more memorable stays for their guests,” Celine Lee, Alexa Country Manager for Amazon Canada, said in a press release.

The Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in Quebec is the first hotel in Canada to offer the service. Guests can access services in French and English and ask Alexa to translate phrases in 50 supported languages.

Alexa’s use in a room is optional, Amazon says. Guests can disable the microphone on Echo smart speakers by tapping the “off” button. Guests also don’t have to sign into their Amazon accounts to use the service.

Rogers and Microsoft enter new 5G partnership

Microsoft and Rogers have entered a partnership to preview the former’s Azure Programmable Connectivity (APC), a solution that helps developers build 5G applications.

According to Microsoft, APC will support “network-aware applications that span compute targets and program the networks in between.”

Microsoft has partnered with several telecom companies across the globe, and Rogers is serving as its Canadian partner.

“Rogers’ longstanding partnership with Microsoft has resulted in a number of industry-first solutions for Canadian businesses and consumers and this latest collaboration will open many new doors,” Ron McKenzie, Rogers’ Chief Technology and Information Officer, said. “Together we are empowering Canadian developers to innovate and shape the future of 5G applications, all powered by Rogers’ national 5G network, the largest in the country.”

Under APC’s private preview, selected developers will be able to access location-based API through Rogers’ 5G network to build applications allowing their devices to be located anywhere.

The partnership builds on other 5G partnerships Rogers has partaken in, including the University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia. ‘

Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky is now invite-only on the App Store

The co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, new Twitter alternative, Bluesky, is now in the App Store, but you must be invited to be a tester. Even though the app is still in an invite-only beta, now that it’s in the App Store, it definitely means its public launch could be on the way.

Bluesky is invite-only, but users can join the waitlist. According to TechCrunch, the app is pretty similar to Twitter but includes a simpler way to create posts to which you can add photos to by selecting a plus button. It also has features for searching and following users and seeing them on your Home timeline, just like Twitter. You can only have posts with 256 characters, and don’t prompt alt text for accessibility.

There are no direct messages; it includes likes, reposts, follows and replies, which is also similar to Twitter.

Bluesky was founded back in 2019 and started as a Twitter side project. Then in 2021, Bluesky started its own company. Back in 2022, the Bluesky blog detailed the status of its new Twitter-like app, also called Bluesky.

The app currently has more than 2000 installs, which are probably only newly added beta testers.

Bluesky will have to compete with the likes of Elon Musk’s Twitter and Mastodon.

LeBron James’ ugly limited-edition PS5 accessories aren’t coming to Canada

PlayStation has teamed up with NBA star LeBron James on a limited-edition PS5 cover and DualSense controller.

The Black PS5 accessories were co-designed by James and feature quotes and imagery from his journey, including “nothing is given, everything is earned” and “build, uplift, empower.

PS5 LeBron accessories

However, PlayStation has confirmed to MobileSyrup that the accessories aren’t coming to Canada. Instead, the company has teased a separate Canada-focused collaboration with Toronto-born actor-comedian, King Bach. While it says more will be shared on that later this year, it did point to a PS5 ad with Bach that ran during the Super Bowl last month:

The partnerships with James and Bach come as part of PlayStation’s new “Playmakers” program, a promotional campaign that sees the gaming giant partner with prominent athletes, actors, artists, gamers and other figures.

That said, PlayStation previously worked with James on a decidedly strange God of War Ragnarök ad in which he, Ben Stiller and John Travolta all appeared with their respective sons.

Galaxy Watch 6 expected to feature larger battery this year

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 is expected to launch in the latter half of the year, so it makes sense that the South Korean company is starting to prepare for its arrival. Part of this process includes ensuring the device’s components are certified by regulators.

GalaxyClub spotted that South Korean regulators have certified two power cells that will likely be available in the Galaxy Watch 6. The certification indicates that there will be two watch models, one with a 40mm base and a slighter 44mm base. The certification filing also features two model numbers, ‘SM-R93x’ and ‘SM-R94x.’

The image shows a 300mAh battery for the smaller watch, with the larger device sporting a 425mAh cell. This is compared to the 285mAh battery in the 40mm Galaxy Watch 5 and the 410mAh cell in the 44mm variant.

According to a previous leak, the Galaxy Watch 6 is rumoured to feature a curved glass design similar to the Apple Watch Series 8’s display. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 series released on August 26th, 2022.

Tesla Model Y refresh to go into production in 2024

Tesla is reportedly planning a refresh of its popular Model Y, code-named “Juniper,” according to sources familiar with the matter.

The update is said to involve changes to both the exterior and interior of the vehicle, with production scheduled to begin in October 2024, as shared by Reuters, via TeslaNorth.

The report also states that Tesla has requested quotes from multiple suppliers for the new Model Y Juniper. The planned refresh comes as Tesla prepares to launch its Model 3 Highland refresh, which will simplify the interior and exterior builds of the car. It is not entirely certain whether the Model Y Juniper will follow the same simplified design direction as the Model 3 Highland.

Tesla North says that the Model 3 Highland will be manufactured at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, as soon as November.

Overall, the Model Y Juniper refresh is an exciting development for Tesla. With production scheduled to begin in 2024, there’s still a lot of time to speculate about what new features and improvements the updated vehicle will bring.

New Motorola Razr foldable to launch ‘very soon’

A new version of Motorola’s iconic foldable Razr is on the way.

According to a CNBC News, Lenovo (which owns Motorola) is looking to release the next version of the device “very soon.”

The iconic Razr, which Motorola first launched in 2004, became one of the most popular flip phones of the 2000s. The 2020 foldable remake of the device was overall well received. According to Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang at the MWC event in Barcelona, Spain, reception for the Razr has been “good” and users can expect the next version of the foldable phone “very soon.” He added that the new device would see improvements in the hinge and the “applications” on the device.

“I think it’s much better,” Yang said about the yet-to-release device, likely compared to its predecessor.

Yang then moved on to pricing. While he did not say how much the upcoming device will cost, he did indicate that it might be expensive. He said that current foldable devices are priced quite high, but they will likely reduce in the future.

“When the technology becomes mature, then the price could go down then you can drive higher volume,” he said. Cheaper pricing in the future would serve to boost the foldable market further. For now, foldable devices account for only 1.1 percent of total smartphone shipments in 2022, according to research firm IDC, and are only expected to increase to 2.8 percent in 2026.

The second-gen Razr wasn’t released in Canada, and we’re uncertain if Motorola and Lenovo have plans to launch the upcoming foldable here.

French Canadian now available as an interface language in Android Reddit app

Reddit’s March update is out now, and it brings French Canadian as a language for the Android app interface.

In a recent blog post, the platform announced that those with French Canadian as their phone’s default language selection would see the Reddit interface in French Canadian. Users on the updated Android app will be able to change their language preferences in the app’s settings if they prefer to revert to English.

In addition to French Canadian, the update also brings Dutch and Swedish to the Reddit Android app. “We’ll be rounding out coverage for these languages to iOS, web, and more throughout 2023,” wrote Reddit.

Apart from new languages for the Android app interface, the update also brings the ability to “Search Within Post Comments.”

The feature allows you to search for a specific keyword within the thread’s comments without having to press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F on your keyboard. Once typed out, all instances of the specific keyword would be highlighted.

Further, iOS Reddit users would now see their Vault (digital wallet) has been moved to the side drawer. To view your Collectible Avatars, access your public Vault address and recovery phrase, change your Vault password, sign out of your Vault, and switch Vaults, you’ll have to navigate to the side drawer now.

Other updates include changes to the Reddit chat and Mobile Crowd Control options.
