AI-powered Instagram age verification coming to Canada

Instagram is expanding its age-verification tools to users in Canada.

Specifically, users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be subject to the new tools. The company will use two ways to verify a person’s age, which will only be triggered if a user attempts to change their date of birth on the app from under 18 to over 18, according to CTV News.

The two ways Instagram will determine if the user is above or below 18 are by:

  1. Analyzing identification through a driver’s licence or ID card
  2. Through a video selfie

If a user decides to verify their age by the video selfie method, Instagram will use facial age estimation technology to estimate their age. Instagram says it has already tested the tool in the U.S., U.K., India, and Brazil since June 2022, and it has stopped 96 percent of teens from falsely changing their date of birth.

“When we know if someone is a teen (13-17), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences like defaulting them into private accounts, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don’t know and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads,” Instagram said in a news release.

Instagram uses facial age estimation technology by Yoti, a U.K.-based digital identity company that processes the image/video to estimate the user’s age. The company clarified that its tech is not the same as regular facial recognition technology, and images are deleted by both Meta and Yoti and not stored on servers. Similarly, the company deletes video selfies from its servers within 30 days.

However, others have pointed out concerns regarding AI bias when analyzing videos. A recent Western University study found that AI not only can have the same biases as humans but can even exaggerate them in some cases. The study found that such AI sometimes falsely estimates the ages of older adults in comparison to younger ones, “and it would often overestimate the age of smiling faces.” Additionally, researchers said, “there were more inaccuracies with female faces in comparison to male faces.”

“Our results showed AI is even less accurate and more biased than human observers when judging a person’s age – even though the overall pattern of errors and biases is similar,” said research author Melvyn A. Goodale from Western University, in a news release.

This comes soon after TikTok’s new update that limits teens to access 60 minutes of screen time a day on the app.

Bell, Vidéotron battle over cost of 911 services

Vidéotron is accusing Bell, and other telecom companies, of overcharging for 9-1-1 services.

In an application filed with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Vidéotron says the company is billing Canadians for next-generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) services, despite the system not being implemented yet.

“Bell has failed to meet its regulatory obligations as an NG-9-1-1 service provider, in particular, to implement an NG-9-1-1 system that is reliable, resilient, secure, while maintaining costs to a minimum, in accordance with the regulatory framework for NG-9-1-1 services,” Vidéotron said in a reply dated February 10th, 2023.

Bell, Sasktel, and Telus are tasked with maintaining the current 9-1-1 system and building NG-9-1-1. Once implemented, it will allow callers to share information with emergency services in various ways, such as text and images. Telecom providers, including Vidéotron, must pay to access such emergency services on their networks.

The saga started when Bell filed an application in November 2022, arguing Vidéotron wasn’t paying fees to access the 9-1-1 frameworks. Vidéotron’s response stated providers should charge 9-1-1 fees based on usage and refund fees collected for NG9-1-1 services until “the migration of emergency calls to the NG9-1-1 system has begun.” The Commission combined the two applications into one matter in December 2022.

“Maintaining two 9-1-1 networks does not need to stretch. The only reason 9-1-1 Service Providers argue otherwise is to continue to be overcompensated by receiving full payment for two 9-1-1 charges concurrently,” Vidéotron said in its February 10th reply.

The company said its costs for the services would only double under its plans to acquire Freedom Mobile from Shaw.

Bell’s response

In its own reply, Bell argues against Vidéotron’s accusations. The company says it, along with SaskTel and Telus, launched NG-9-1-1 services “within their territories.” However, as the Toronto Star notes, Canadians can only make voice calls, just like the legacy 9-1-1 system.

On double charges, Bell says it’s only following the CRTC’s rules.

Philippe Gauvin, a lawyer with Bell, told the Star the CRTC established payment rules in 2017, outlining providers will have to pay for both services.

“If a carrier only pays one fee, which is basically what Vidéotron is arguing for, they would be under-compensating for the regime,” Gauvin told the publication.

Passkeys are coming to Dashlane with Android 14

With the coming of Android 14, more apps are set to replace regular passwords with passkeys, and one of them is Dashlane.

Passkeys allow users to create online accounts and sign in to them without entering a password. According to 1Password, if they are implemented correctly, you won’t have to type anything out or require a two-factor authentication code.

In a blog post today, Dashlane said that it would add support for passkeys in Android 14, as the new version of Android allows passkeys for third-party apps. Therefore, Dashlane won’t be the only app that’ll be picking up passkeys when Android 14 launches later this year. 1Password is another app that’s announced the inclusion of passkeys.

In a tweet, Dashlane showed off what passkeys would look like on its app when Android 14 launches.

Passkeys will launch in Dashlane with the final release of Android 14, which is expected to roll out in August.

OpenAI will make it easier for developers to integrate ChatGPT into apps

OpenAI is releasing a new API that will let third-party apps and software developers integrate ChatGPT tools to their services.

According to a new blog post from the company, via The Verge, the integration will be significantly cheaper than using its existing language models.

OpenAI is making its AI-powered speech-to-text model, Whisper, available for use through an API.

The new ChatGPT API can be used for more than just creating AI-powered chat interfaces, like Snapchat’s new My AI feature and Quizlet for vocabulary learning and practice tests.

The new model OpenAI is releasing today is called ‘gpt-3.5-turbo,’ and it is said to be the best model for non-chat use cases. OpenAI is offering 1,000 tokens for $0.002, “which is 10x cheaper than our existing GPT-3.5 models,” wrote the company.

Developers will also be able to get a dedicated instance of ChatGPT if they are running a large amount of data through the API, essentially giving the developers more control “over what model you’re using, how long you want it to take to respond to requests, and how long conversations with the bot can be.”

Additionally, with the AI-powered speech-to-text model, Whisper, the company says you can transcribe or translate audio at a cost of $0.006 per minute.

Lastly, OpenAI is also working on increasing the uptime and stability of ChatGPT.

The new API will make it easier for developers to get their hands on OpenAI’s tech, ultimately streamlining the process for developers looking to include chat services in their apps.

Snap rolls out new way to let users keep their Snap Streaks going

Is there anything worse than losing a Snap Streak?

While the obvious answer is yes, teenage me didn’t always see it like that.

Snap Streaks are a feature on Snapchat that track how often users send each other daily snaps. According to the company’s website, you and a friend are on a streak if you’ve sent snaps to each other for three consecutive days. Doing so leads to a fire emoji next to your friend’s account name.

The rules have been strict; miss one day and the streak expires. But now the company has rolled out a new feature that could change the rules of the game.

“We’re making it easier to take a break with a new feature we’re testing to let you reignite the spark and restore one streak for free with just one tap,” the company writes in a blog post.

Users will only be able to restore their streak once. According to TechCrunch, it’ll cost American users an additional 99 cents (roughly $1.36 CAD) to add more restores. It’s unclear what the pricing for Canadian users will look like.

The company will further roll out the benefit under its subscription program Snapchat+ “soon.”

“We’ll also be adding a new way for Snapchat+ subscribers to freeze their Streaks, putting things on pause when they know they’re going off the grid,” the company says.

The news follows the company’s jump on the ChatGPT bandwagon. Snap will soon introduce its own chatbot called My AI.

YouTube is looking to future-proof itself with AI tools

After the departure of Susan Wojcicki, who served as YouTube’s CEO for nine years, YouTube is gearing up for some big changes under the leadership of the new senior vice president and YouTube head executive Neal Mohan, as shared by AndroidPolice.

Mohan addressed the YouTube community today, laying out the directions for growth that the platform hopes to see in the coming year.

The biggest focus for YouTube, like with a majority of other tech companies, is to integrate AI technology into the product. “AI presents incredible creative opportunities, but must be balanced by responsible stewardship,” wrote Mohan. “And the power of AI is just beginning to emerge in ways that will reinvent video and make the seemingly impossible possible. Creators will be able to expand their storytelling and raise their production value, from virtually swapping outfits to creating a fantastical film setting through AI’s generative capabilities.”

However, unlike Google and Bard, YouTube is taking its time to ensure that it has the right approach to AI integration. The platform is aware of the potential copyright and privacy issues that come with AI and wants to proceed with caution.

In addition to AI tools, YouTube is introducing new features for Shorts, including the ability to record side-by-side with traditional YouTube videos, giving creators more ways to make money, growing creator communities and more.

Check out Mohan’s blog post detailing the future here.

Koodo, Virgin Plus bump $55/8GB plan up to 10GB

Late last month, Koodo, Virgin Plus and Fido rolled out double data deals on select BYOP plans. Those deals are still on, but now Koodo and Virgin Plus are back with another deal for those looking to spend a little less money and get a little less data.

Both flanker brands previously offered $55/mo 8GB plans, but they recently bumped those plans up to 10GB of data. Koodo’s website lists the $55/mo plan as an 8GB plan with a bonus 2GB, while Virgin Plus lists the plan as a flat 10GB, though it’s restricted to new activations.

At the time of writing, Fido still offered a $55/mo 8GB plan.

Thanks to this change, Koodo and Virgin now offer plans that give customers an extra 10GB of data for an extra $5/mo. At $55/10GB, $60/20GB and $65/30GB, there are some decent options out there (at least compared to what the providers offered before).

Along with the 10GB of data, the $55/mo plans also include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, and data at 4G speeds (Koodo says this is up to 100Mbps while Virgin is up to 150Mbps). The providers offer some other benefits as well, such as Koodo’s Pick Your Perk options or Virgin’s Member Benefits. Oh, and they both offer roaming packages that just got more expensive.

You can check out Koodo’s plans here and Virgin’s plans here.
