In an America shaken by the murder of Charlie Kirk and riven by extreme political polarization, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has put an incendiary idea back on the table: a « national divorce ».
The murder of Charlie Kirk, a conservative media figure, has caused a veritable earthquake in American politics.

This tragedy, perpetrated at a university rally, has reinforced the already yawning political divisions between Republicans and Democrats.
There’s nothing left to discuss with the left… To be honest, I want a peaceful national divorce.
-Marjorie Taylor Greene
It’s in this climate of grief and anger, where polarization is reaching a critical point, that controversial Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene sees only one way out: a national divorce.
By advocating a split between red states and blue states, Marjorie Taylor Greene reactivates the specter of a national fracture.

Her words, considered provocative and dangerous by many elected representatives, resonate with a section of the conservative base, galvanized by a climate of unprecedented tension following the assassination of one of its heroes.
The MP takes up her idea
It was against this backdrop that Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene revived a concept she has been hammering home for several years. She presents this breakup as the only way out of a cohabitation that she believes has become impossible between Republican and Democratic states.
Back in 2023, Greene wrote:
« We need a national divorce. We need to separate the Republican states from the Democratic states and shrink the federal government. Everyone I talk to says so. »

Today, these words find a particular resonance in the emotion aroused by Kirk’s death and in the anger of part of the American right.
A peaceful national divorce?
Straightforwardly, she declared:
« There’s nothing left to discuss with the left… To be honest, I want a peaceful national divorce. »

Referring to the case of Charlie Kirk, she wanted to demonstrate that, in her opinion, this approach is the only conceivable solution:
« They murdered our nice boy who was talking to them peacefully and debating ideas. »
Political reactions
While Taylor Greene claims that « Everyone I talk to says that », the reality is different: most Republican officials refuse to endorse the idea of a « national divorce ».
The rare endorsements come mostly from conservative influencers and commentators, with no real institutional translation.

Nonetheless, his statement prompted a wave of criticism. Moderate Republicans like Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney and even Utah Governor Spencer Cox, who back in 2023 had blasted Taylor Greene’s « destructive » and dangerous rhetoric:
« This rhetoric is destructive, wrong and, frankly, evil. We don’t need a divorce, we need couples therapy. »
After the murder of Charlie Kirk in Utah, Governor Spencer Cox renewed his call for unity, inviting Americans to take « another path » to overcome political hatred, to find a « way out » of growing hostility, and denounced the toxic role of social networks, which he called « the cancer of our society ».
Another solution
« We need to find another solution. We have to find a way out of this growing hostility, » said Cox in his many speeches since Kirk’s assassination, also emphasizing the devastating effect of social networks in spreading hatred:
« Social networks have become, in many ways, a cancer on our society. »

The murder of Charlie Kirk accentuates the image of an America locked in a never-ending culture war.
In this climate, where the right is radicalizing its discourse and the left is denouncing cynical instrumentalization, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s proposal for a « national divorce » appears to be the extreme extension of these fractures, fed by an atmosphere of mourning, anger and generalized mistrust.
Vice President JD Vance took the reins of a special edition of The Charlie Kirk Show, in tribute to « his friend » murdered a few days earlier at an event on a Utah college campus.
JD Vance backs mass ‘doxing’ campaign to find and harass Charlie Kirk critics
In the podcast, JD Vance begins by promising to get to the bottom of Kirk’s death, which he attributes to an incredibly destructive movement of « left-wing extremism ».
« Call their employer »
Vance then goes on to urge his supporters, in the name of « civility », to report to employers anyone who celebrated Kirk’s assassination, so they can be fired.

The vice president calls on everyone to take action: if anyone sees someone celebrating Charlie’s murder, they should « Call their employer. »
« In Charlie’s name »
On this special edition of the Charlie Kirk podcast, JD Vance had several guests, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.

The latter promises, « In Charlie’s name », to « identify, disrupt, dismantle and destroy these networks », referring to two organizations cited by JD Vance: the Open Society Foundations and the Ford Foundation, which he accuses of having financially supported an article published in The Nation magazine, entitled « Charlie Kirk’s legacy is not worth mourning ».
The government’s full arsenal
Both foundations categorically denied financially supporting The Nation.
Miller continued his remarks by guaranteeing that « every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and across this administration » will be mobilized for this offensive.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Donald Trump and his advisors are preparing an offensive against radical left-wing groups.
Trump most recently announced, according to CNN, that he was considering designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, saying he had asked U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to look into filing charges under the RICO Act:
It wasn’t clear who or what exactly Trump would designate; Antifa is a loosely organized movement without a distinct leader, membership lists or structure.
A 16-year-old has been identified as the prime suspect in the shooting at Evergreen High School in Denver, Colorado, which occurred on the same day as the high-profile murder of Charlie Kirk.
Officials have identified the 16-year-old suspect who opened fire at a Denver-area high school, saying he was "radicalized by some extreme network."
According to the authorities, he had been « radicalized », one of the only elements put forward during the press briefing.
Less than an hour after the murder of Charlie Kirk
The shooting, which occurred less than an hour after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was gunned down at an event at Utah Valley University, seriously injured two students at Evergreen High School.

Authorities provided little information about the suspect, indicating only that he was a 16-year-old student who arrived at the school that day by school bus, and who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the events.
UPDATE: Social media accounts that appear to be connected to the Evergreen High School shooting suspect are littered with references to mass shootings and antisemitic views, The Denver Post found.

However, she said that more details would be provided « at a later date », which left room for much speculation.
Social networks
According to investigations by the Denver Post and the Colorado Sun, social networking accounts linked to the suspect are replete with references to mass shootings, in particular the Columbine shooting in 1999, where he posted himself wearing a T-shirt bearing the word « WRATH », as one of the shooters at the time.

The suspect’s accounts also allegedly disseminated conspiracy, anti-Semitic and white supremacist-tinged content. A few days before the shooting, he allegedly posted on X a photo of himself holding a revolver, accompanied by the caption, the same caliber of weapon used in the attack.
