A journalist had his media pass taken away for asking a question about Junior Team Canada

Free speech is a sensitive issue in the U.S. right now, and the situation of Jimmy Kimmel, who recently returned to the airwaves after a forced hiatus, is a case in point. But he’s not the only example that comes to mind: a journalist from The Athletic had his media pass cut off for questioning a Golden Knights player in connection with the Team Canada junior issue.

What we’re reading is that a reporter from The Athletic has been asking questions in Carolina and Vegas in connection with Team Canada junior players. The Hurricanes did the right thing by allowing their members to answer the questions. content-ads]However, on the Vegas side, it was a different story. Coach Bruce Cassidy wasn’t given the OK to talk about the one-on-one situation with the reporter, and prior to a press conference with the coach, the reporter in question from The Athletic was ejected from the club’s practice arena not only for media availability, but also for the evening’s game. Basically, the club didn’t like the fact that the reporter “imprisoned” Noah Hanifin in a corner in order to question him on the subject. It’s a serious situation. Freedom of expression is at stake here, and the questions were related to the subject. If the journalist had, for example, gone to Florida to ask a Russian player about a controversial law in Manitoba, that would have been one thing. But here, it was related to hockey. [spacer tilte=’prolongation’]Obviously, we only know one side of the story. But in light of what’s been published, we understand that the Golden Knights didn’t want to take the heat for the situation. You have every right to want to sign a player from Team Canada Junior. But clearly, you have to respond when it comes time to comment on the matter.

Joshua Roy: it’s becoming increasingly clear that his future lies elsewhere

The Canadiens’ training camp is already well underway, and a number of young players are trying to convince the staff that they deserve a place with the big club. Among them, Joshua Roy is attracting a lot of attention… but not necessarily for the right reasons.

In his most recent appearance on JiC, Tony Marinaro was very clear about the 22-year-old forward:

“He was given a golden opportunity to play with good players in Alex Newhook and Zack Bolduc… I think more and more that Joshua Roy – and I hope it works out here for him – his future lies elsewhere.”

Tony Marinaro

The young Beauceron worked hard this summer to arrive in better physical condition, something he had often been criticized for. But for Marinaro, the train passed him by two years ago. “Too little, too late”, added Tony Marinaro. He had an opportunity and he didn’t take it. Last season, he didn’t really have a good training camp and was even invisible at times [content-ads]This remark illustrates the situation of the young Québécois player, who has to deal with an increasingly difficult line-up to break into. The offensive top-9 is virtually complete, especially with the addition of Zachary Bolduc and a raw talent in Ivan Demidov. And behind all these players with their position already secured with the big club, young players are also making a good impression and could overtake Joshua Roy in the “hierarchy” of forwards in the organization. Among these players are prospects Florian Xhekaj, Owen Beck and Oliver Kapanen, who continue to make a good impression, and it’s hard not to draw a parallel with former Montrealer Logan Mailloux. He too was an interesting prospect, but didn’t seem to be in the plans of Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton, having been drafted by the former management. The Canadiens have already said they won’t hesitate to overpay for a player in a trade. As my colleague Maxime Truman has often mentioned in his podcasts, Roy and Mailloux are not management’s favorites. The Logan Mailloux trade confirmed this. It remains to be seen whether Roy will suffer the same fate, or whether he’ll manage to turn things around and force his bosses’ hand. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Things are good in Seattle.

On to the next stage of the camp: Kirby Dach in action tonight

There will be quite a few regulars in action tonight at the Bell Centre, and when I say regulars, I mean the Canadiens. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, have opted to bring some of their non-stars to town.Michael Pezzetta will be there, though. Here’s

Note that the first line (Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky) is on the ice this morning with the group that will play tonight. Ivan Demidov, Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach are also there. So Dach is taking the next step by playing a game? Obviously, yes.

[content-ads]Joshua Roy, Filip Mesar, Vinzenz Rohrer, Luke Tuch, Jared Davidson and Florian Xhekaj, meanwhile, will get minutes on the club’s bottom-6 .Good news for the Unicorn:Mike Matheson will be with Noah Dobson and David Reinbacher will get an audition alongside Kaiden Guhle. Ryan O’Rourke and Nathan Clurman will be the other guys in uniform, with Samuel Montembeault and Jacob Fowler.

[spacer title=’prolongation’]Based on what we’re seeing, it looks like it’ll be the other way around in Toronto on Saturday, with depth guys playing for the Canadiens and regulars for the Maple Leafs. Could Lane Hutson be THE big player in uniform on Saturday? Will any of the regulars be playing with him? We’ll see.

John Tortorella wants to come back: what if Martin St-Louis gave him a call?

When John Tortorella arrived in Philadelphia in 2022, he said that the title of Flyers head coach would be his last in the NHL. However, he’s obviously changed his mind: he wants to come back. It’s amazing how not leaving on your own terms can be a game-changer, andhe talked about it in an article with the NHL website. What’s interesting is that Tortorella is aware that in 2025, a coach has to adapt. He has done so, for example, by accepting an assistant role with Team USA, andwas assistant to his former assistant, Mike Sullivan, at the Four Nations Confrontation.Torts wants to come back, but it won’t be easy. Will he be able to find a position quickly? If he wants to stay in the game, he may have to do what others have done: take on a smaller role. Claude Julien (Saint-Louis’ assistant) is a good example of this[content-ads]So the question I’m asking myself this morning is: how much does Martin St-Louis want to make room for him here? Obviously, that’s speculative. But when you know the bond of trust that exists between the two men, you have to wonder.

St-Louis knew Tortorella in Tampa Bay and they have a lot of respect for each other. They worked together in Columbus for a few months. Torts wants to stay in hockey and has proven he can work for someone who was once “under” him, which is a game-changer. Since the Habs don’t have a payroll for personnel and the club has proven it’s not afraid to add people to the organization chart, I wonder how much thought Martin St-Louis has put into it. Mind you: I’m not saying he’d take the place of an existing assistant or add himself behind the bench. I’m not saying it will happen, but I wonder if I’m the first one to have thought of it. After all, since November 2021, the Habs haven’t been afraid to step outside the box when it comes to making decisions…[spacer title=’en rafale’]- Oh yeah?

Florian Xhekaj battles Nicolas Deslauriers

We’re used to Arber Xhekaj’s fights, but today it was Florian Xhekaj who stole the show, scoring earlier in the game. But the youngster really wants to impress his brother… or his mother… or the Canadiens… or everyone in the end. In the second period, he threw down the gloves against none other than Nicolas Deslauriers.

Well, the result wasn’t necessarily the most conclusive for Arber’s little brother, but hats off to his determination. The Québécois is 30 pounds heavier than he is… Florian is just one pass away from a Gordie Howe hat trick [content-ads] I don’t think Xhekaj will start the season in Montreal: places are limited, but so far he’s left a good calling card. Not only is he turning heads, but if he keeps this up, he’ll earn his first call-up to the big club, that’s for sure. As we discussed this morning, Martin St-Louis wants sandpaper. As for Deslauriers, he has now danced with both brothers during his career. The next step is to integrate him into the family [spacer title=’Prolongation’] In any case, Florian has impressed Georges Laraque. Maybe soon we’ll see him with Laraque in Brossard…

Florian Xhekaj scores in front of his mother (who was moved)

Tonight, the Canadiens are in action at the Bell Centre. There’s a ton of guys trying to prove themselves… but there’s also a beautiful family moment, as the two Xhekaj brothers are reunited in the Habs lineup. It’s the first time the two guys have worn the Habs uniform together.

Clearly, then, this is quite a moment for the family, especially since the brothers’ mother made the trip to the Bell Centre. And obviously, her youngest son wanted to make the moment even more magical: he scored a goal in the first period tonight. And he did it after a great effort (and following a great hand from Tyler Thorpe).

[content-ads]And that, clearly, made Mom’s night, who was visibly moved after seeing her son hit the target.

She was seen with tears in her eyes in the stands, visibly proud of her boy (and probably of everything else going on right now, hehe).

But beyond the beautiful family moment, it’s also a great way for Florian to earn points at the club’s camp. We know he’s trying to prove he deserves his place in the NHL (or, at least, to prove he deserves to be one of the first recalled from Laval), and he’s showing great things with Thorpe and Luke Tuch so far.The Unicorn is working hard on the ice, and it’s paying off.

We’ll see if he can stay the course, but scoring in front of his mother and in the same uniform as his brother must have been a great moment for the kid.And it made a lot of people in town happy, I’m sure.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- What do you think?

– Kirill Kaprizov is not to be traded.

– Big news from the Blue Jays.

Cédric Paré vs Patrik Laine: will the rematch take place tonight?

The Canadiens got off to a poor start last year. There were two reasons for this:1. Martin St-Louis’s practice camp looked like a day camp;2. Patrik Laine’s serious knee injury, courtesy of Cédric Paré, threw cold water on a vibe that was ultra-positive before that.

We’re (already) entitled to hope for a better start to the season from the Montrealers, because the intensity has been there since the first day of camp in Brossard, which opened after weeks and weeks of informal voluntary practice in Montreal… But we’re still hoping that Patrik Laine, Kirby Dach or Kaiden Guhle won’t get injured before the end of training camp. Except that tonight’s game scares me. Why? Because, in theory, it should be Kirby Dach’s first game (under Patrik Laine and Ivan Demidov); Demidov and Laine didn’t play on Tuesday, and Dach could be their center tonight at the Bell Centre. But also because Cédric Paré could be in uniform tonight at the Bell Centre. He was once again invited to take part in the Maple Leafs’ camp this year… and he didn’t play in the team’s first two pre-season games.

(Credit: Toronto Maple Leafs)

[content-ads]Opposing teams have a habit of playing their Québécois when they come to Montreal in pre-season, so Paré could be in uniform tonight. We should have confirmation before lunchtime. Paré injured Laine on September 28, 2024 at the Bell Centre; let’s hope that if he’s in the visitors’ line-up tonight, he won’t injure Dach or Laine (again) on September 25, 2025. In theory, if the NHL were a league where respect was king, we’d arrange for Paré and Laine/Dach not all to be on the Bell Centre ice tonight. The two teams would call each other to avoid another catastrophe… [content-ads]But the Toronto – Montreal rivalry is likely to mean that nobody will call each other. Let’s just hope the Maple Leafs have had a flash of genius in concocting their starting lineup. If they haven’t, I’m pretty sure the Bell Centre crowd will greet Cédric Paré with boos. That’s the way we are in Montreal… and I have no problem with our intense and passionate partisan nature. Let’s hope we have guys like Arber Xhekaj or Tyler Thorpe in the lineup…[spacer title=’Prolongation’]Cédric Paré played 59 games with the Toronto Marlies last season, after injuring Patrik Laine. He collected 26 points and spent 43 minutes in the penalty box. He’s more of a player with limited talent than a badass. Greetings to his chums who sent me threats last year. No need to do it again this year, gentlemen..

“Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov have the attitude of Tom Brady”

The Habs players and management set the tone at last week’s golf tournament: the goal is to make the playoffs. Although young, Ivan Demidov and Lane Hutson will be the cornerstones of the team’s success, and they seem ready for the role when you look at their attitude on the ice. They arrive before the others, are hungry to learn and even get angry in practice when things go wrong. In short, they have an attitude that few have in professional sports. It’s quite similar to what you hear from Sidney Crosby, who is a notch above everyone else in terms of his preparation. Maxim Lapierre, contributor to The Sick Podcast, compared their attitude to that of none other than Tom Brady.

“I’ve skated with a lot of NHL players in my life. Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov, it doesn’t make sense. They’re so talented, so fast, but above all, so passionate. They love hockey, they just talk about hockey. They have the Tom Brady attitude.”

Maxim Lapierre

[content-ads] He also compared them to Crosby, who, when he misses a shot during a practice, will make sure to stay after to work on it. Lapierre added a very interesting point. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen players like Hutson and Demidov in Montreal. With their attitude, they’ll push their teammates to excel and can get angry when things go wrong. If, for the time being, they seem to be silent leaders in the dressing room, over the years they may become more vocal and really lead the way. For now, they’re doing it with attitude and talent, and in the first two warm-up games, they once again stood out from the crowd. They really seem to be on another level when they jump on the ice.[spacer title=’En rafale’] – New podcast available.

Video: Fan brawl breaks out at Jets vs Oilers game

Sometimes, hockey players drop the gloves on the ice, as we saw last night when Florian Xhekaj took his courage in both hands to fight Nicolas Deslauriers, who is not an obvious customer. But sometimes, fights break out in the stands. The Oilers were visiting the home of the Jets, and during the game, fans got into a fistfight in the stands a few rows from the rink. In a video posted on Reddit by a Jets fan, you can see that things got a little heated and that several people were involved in the melee. To get to this point, something clearly happened. And it sounds like I’d be curious to know how some fans decided to start beating the crap out of each other… during a preseason game.

Jets Vs Oilers crowd fightbyu/business_socksss inwinnipegjets

[content-ads] Obviously, these things happen. You don’t often see fights in the stands, but it’s not as if they’ve never happened either. That said… These fights between fans are unacceptable and should never, ever happen. Because in reality, violence shouldn’t be used to settle anything, no matter what’s been said or done. And it’s not a good image for the sport either. If you go to a game, it’s to cheer on your team… not to create anything violent in the stands because it’s simply unnecessary. We don’t know the full story, but we also have to wonder whether the Jets will take action on the matter. We could expect to see fans suspended or banned from games in Winnipeg, and I wonder if the police will want to take a look at this.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – Bad news for the Sens,

Arber Xhekaj: “Even I probably wouldn’t have fought Nicolas Deslauriers”

Fighting is less and less fashionable in the NHL. Compared to 20 years ago, I mean, but it’s still an eye-opener to see a player fighting at practice. It shows his courage and what he’s willing to do for his club. Jared Davidson, who did it on Monday, is a good example. But of course, seeing Florian Xhekaj throw down the gloves against Nicolas Deslauriers, who is one of the toughest guys in the NHL, also got a lot of attention. And rightly so.What’s interesting to note is that among the people who were impressed by Florian was his brother Arber. Throwing down the gloves against Deslauriers is intense, and the Sheriff is the first to say it: he certainly wouldn’t have fought the Québécois.[content-ads]As Eric Engels reminds us, Arber already fought Deslauriers in 2022, when he was pushing for a job in the National Hockey League.

But what the defenseman means is that yesterday, he wouldn’t have thrown down the gloves. So Arber, who is wiser than he used to be (or has been broken by the Habs, depending on how you look at it), fully realized yesterday how much his brother has aged: he can now stand up for himself. That’s a good thing. And the Habs need that…On this special night for the Xhekaj family, it’s clearer than ever that Florian has a chance of breaking into the club’s line-up at the start of the season. Can he do it? [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Ah well
