Renders show that Coca-Cola is working on a new phone

It looks like Coca-Cola is making a new smartphone, according to the well-known leaker Ice Universe.

Reportedly, the company will partner with another smartphone brand for their first-ever Cola Phone. However, it’s unclear who the Coke brand will partner with.

It’s unclear if this is right, but replies to the post indicate that this handset might be a rebranded Realme 10 Pro, which is a mid-range phone. This also features a 6.7-inch 120Hz IPS LCD screen with a Snapdragon 695 chipset, comes in 6/8/12GB of RAM variants, and sports a 108-megapixel primary shooter and a 5,000mAh battery. But it’s unclear if this is that phone.

This isn’t the first time a brand has worked together with a phone company, as we’ve seen Pokémon-themed Galaxy Z Flip handsets, a Dragon Ball Z Realme GT Neo 3 and even a Naruto-themed Realme GT Neo 3.

Pixel Fold’s Flip to Shh requires the handset to be folded

The long-rumoured Google Pixel Fold’s Flip to Shh feature is a bit different than what we’re used to.

Flip to Shh is featured on various smartphones, including the Pixel 7. The feature on the Pixel 7 series can automatically turn on Do Not Disturb mode when you put it flat on its display on an even surface.

However, 9to5Google has found strings in the latest Digital Wellbeing app update, which turns on Do Not Disturb when you fold your phone and place it face down on a flat surface. When flipped, you’ll feel a vibration notifying you that Do Not Disturb is turned on.

9to5Google says that Quick Tap will also be on the device, allowing you to assign an app or action to a double tap on the rear of your handset.

Bell Aliant charges N.S. senior long distance prices for local calls

When Frankie Allison received his landline bill, he knew the numbers were wrong.

The Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia resident had agreed to pay $35 monthly for a new house phone with Bell Aliant that he purchased before Christmas, according to the CBC.

But when he received his bill for two months of local calls, equaling more than $600, he saw he was charged 20 cents a minute for long-distance calls. But Allison wasn’t making international calls; most of his calls were to the nearby suburb of Lower Sackville.

“I made calls to Sackville — and I mean Sackville to here is no long distance,” Allison told CBC.

Bell owns Bell Aliant, a telecom company that serves Atlantic Canada.

The 81-year-old called the company after he received the bill. Bell Aliant told him the numbers were correct. He cancelled his landline and said he wouldn’t pay an incorrect bill. The company said they would send his bill to a collections agency.

“I told him you can put in whose hands you like, I’m not paying anything,” Allison told the publication. “I’m 81 years old, I don’t need no credit.”

Bell Aliant didn’t admit to its mistake until CBC reached out, prompting them to look into the bill. The company admitted there was a “programming error” and waived the charges.

MacBook Pro (2023) sports slightly slower SSD than its predecessor

It looks like the base-level 14-inch MacBook Pro running Apple’s new M2 Pro chip has worse SSD performance than its predecessor.

According to tests run by 9to5Mac, the old M1 Pro MacBook Pro had a write speed of 3,950.8MB/s and a read speed of 4,900.3MB/s. The new M2 Pro MacBook Pro, on the other hand, had read and write speeds of 3,154.5MB/s and 2,973.4MB/s, respectively.

9to5 attributes this drop to a change in the number and the capacity of the NAND chips — these are what make up the storage of SSDs. The M2 Pro MacBook Pro sports fewer NAND chips at a higher capacity than before. Specifically, the M1 Pro version of the MacBook Pro split its 512GB of SSD storage across four 128GB NAND chips. 9to5Mac took a peak inside its M2 MacBook Pro and found one NAND chip on the front of the motherboard and noted there likely was another chip on the underside of the motherboard (the M1 Pro variant sported two chips on the top and two on the underside).

While disappointing to see a drop in performance like this, it’s worth keeping in mind that the read/write speeds are still quite fast, and for most people, the difference likely won’t be noticeable. That said, some edge cases might see worse performance as a result.

This also isn’t the first time a MacBook took a hit to SSD performance. 9to5 highlights that the base M1 and M2 MacBook Air had a similar performance dropoff thanks to Apple switching from two 128GB NAND chips in the M1 Air to one 256GB chip in the M2 Air. Moreover, a quick dig into the MobileSyrup archives revealed that back when the MacBook Air still used Intel chips, the 2019 Air saw a slight drop in SSD read speeds compared to the 2018 Air.

How to watch the Xbox & Bethesda Developer_Direct in Canada

On January 25th at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Xbox is introducing a new showcase format: the Xbox & Bethesda ‘Developer_Direct.’

Unlike traditional E3-style keynotes featuring dozens of games, Developer_Direct will focus on deep dives into a handful of titles. For the inaugural show, this includes:

  • The Elder Scrolls Online (ZeniMax Online Studios) — an unveiling of the 2023 Chapter Update (an ‘ESO Chapter Reveal Event’ will also take place immediately after Developer_Direct)
  • Forza Motorsport (Turn 10) — we’ll learn more about the next Forza game built from the ground up for Xbox Series X/S
  • Minecraft Legends (Mojang and Vancouver’s Blackbird Interactive) — an “insider’s look” into the PvP experience
  • Redfall (Arkane) — “several minutes” of gameplay from this vampire FPS will be shown

Those interested in tuning in can do via Xbox’s Twitch, YouTube and Facebook channels or Bethesda’s YouTube and Twitch channels. An ASL stream will be available on the dedicated Xbox ASL Twitch channel.

It should be noted that Xbox confirmed that Starfield will not be at this Developer_Direct and will instead get its own standalone show at a later date.

What are you looking forward to seeing? Let us know in the comments.
