Prime Minister adds $475 million to the Universal Broadband Fund

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has added $475 million to the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF).

The fund pays for high-speed internet projects in Canada and has paid to connect 900,000 homes so far. The top-up will connect a further 60,000 rural homes under the federal government’s plan to connect 98 percent of Canadians with high-speed internet by 2026.

The government’s current focus is on New Brunswick through a new $17.6 million investment benefiting 27,000 homes. The government also allocated $55 million in federal funding for high-speed internet access to the province earlier this year.

“Every Canadian, wherever they are in the country, deserves good, reliable high-speed internet,” Trudeau said. “We will continue to improve and expand high-speed internet access in every community across the country.”

At this time, 93.5 percent of homes have access to high-speed internet, compared to 79 percent in 2014. The UBF has invested $3.2 billion so far.

We might finally catch a glimpse of Apple’s rumoured VR headset in early 2023

A new report indicates Apple’s augmented reality/virtual reality headset will enter mass production in 2023.

Of course, it’s important to note that this information comes from DigiTimes, a publication with a relatively spotty track record. According to the report, based on the VR headset’s current manufacturing status, it will likely release in April 2023 following the start of mass production in March.

This backs a previous report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman citing a similar production and release timeline.

DigiTimes says that the headset’s initial production run is expected to be limited to roughly 0.7 – 0.8 million units. Previous reports have indicated that the headset will have a price tag in the $3,000 USD range (roughly $3,736 CAD), making it even more expensive than Meta’s recently revealed Quest Pro.

Other rumoured features include dual 4K displays and a chip similar to Apple’s M2 processor, giving the headset ample power to push high-end virtual reality experiences. Some reports also indicate that the VR headset will be compatible with prescription lenses that magnetically attach to the device.

With 2022 almost over, we won’t have to wait long to finally learn more about Apple’s VR plans if this report is accurate.

Netflix is looking to acquire more live sports streaming rights

After gaming, live sports streaming is the next avenue Netflix is looking to enter.

The information comes via a Deadline report that states Netflix has been working to acquire rights to several leagues and events in the past few months, including “tennis tours as well as a purchaser of the World Surf League.” None of the agreements have gone through yet, according to Deadline.

“Sports is the baseline now, we all know it, and finding the right properties, the right leagues is a priority, but it is always a question of the right league, the right deal,” said a Netflix insider.

The company has also reportedly been looking to bid for rights to lower-profile leagues to avoid high bidding costs, alongside having the belief that it can boost viewership for lesser-known sports by giving them a global platform.

This comes as a result of stalling subscriber growth, and the likes of Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ eating up its market share. Major League Soccer and Apple announced in June this year that starting in 2023 soccer fans in Canada and the United States will be able to catch all MLS games directly on Apple TV+, until 2032.

To combat the stagnating user growth, Netflix also recently released its $5.99/month ‘Netflix Basic with Ads’ subscription tier to attract casual streamers to join the platform. Learn more about the cheaper subscription tier here.

As of writing, Netflix’s share is trading 63 percent below its all-time high in November 2021.

oxio internet is sustainable and affordable without the hassle of large telcos

Canadians typically face challenges regarding internet service options. A household may be in the midst of considering a brand new plan or internet service provider (ISP). However, they may discover that there is a shortage of options available in their area. Naturally, one thing that is often on the mind of customers is pricing. Canadian startup oxio provides lower rates without the restriction of a contract, additional fees, or other typical telecom tricks.

In Canada, three major telecommunication companies dominate the home internet space: Rogers, Bell and Telus. The results of this landscape leave Canadians with limited options for alternatives. Further, the shadow monopoly firmly in place offers Canadians even fewer choices regarding pricing. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) largely determines the pricing models for independent ISPs to access the networks that run off those from the major players.

In Ontario, oxio operates on Rogers and Cogeco’s network. In Quebec, the indie ISP runs off the Vidéotron and Cogeco network and in B.C. it uses Shaw. However, this doesn’t mean customers are simply paying for resold services. oxio operates independently and isn’t a big three-flanker brand.

In Canada, internet pricing continues to increase. Back in 2019, the CRTC attempted to reduce wholesale pricing after they found that telcos were inflating metrics in order to undercut independent ISPs. Rates were lowered based on what it cost the big telcos to operate their networks plus a 30 percent profit margin. While this wholesale pricing was in place for a couple of years, in 2021, it was reversed and the previously inflated rates were reinstated. Canadians currently pay an average of $95 per month for home internet, according to reports. This results in Canada being amongst the top three most expensive countries for internet, with the U.S. and Japan in close proximity.

oxio offers sustainable and affordable internet options to Canadians in select regions across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, B.C., Alberta, and Quebec. Those residing in any of these provinces can peruse the company’s website and find an assortment of available plans. oxio offers plans starting at $48/month. oxio provides anywhere from 30Mbps to 300Mbps download speeds and unlimited data. Plus, customers gain access to a number of perks included in the company’s contract-free plan. oxio also promises that it will not inflict unexpected price increases, something many Canadians have come to expect from the larger competitors.

There are a number of independent ISPs in operation in Canada. When compared to the big players, many provide similar unlimited data plans for comparable pricing models. However, what makes oxio internet stand out, in particular, is its brand tone and transparency. The company firmly contests that it provides sustainable services without all the “telco bullshit.” Plus, it’s far too common for the major players to operate as some sort of walled garden by offering expensive internet plans without any explanation as to why pricing is so high. oxio, on the other hand, lays everything on the table.

For its $50/month 75Mbps plan, oxio claims $37 goes towards the networking cost, $1 is partitioned to logistics, an additional $1 goes towards marketing and $3 for hardware. This then leaves $5 to go towards payroll and the remaining $3 is considered company profit. This level of transparency is refreshing, especially in the Canadian market.

oxio even goes as far as to provide a full, transparent pricing breakdown of why the company’s pricing model is structured this way. This page (which anyone can view on its website) offers a lot of insight. oxio claims to work on the metric of a return on investment of 24 months. In its breakdown, the company explains that the margins in place see oxio paying back the initial activation costs for the client over the first two years. Initial activation costs can fall between $315 and $350. Therefore, it isn’t until Year 3 that the company gains a profit of $70.

With that in mind, it’s easy to see why oxio would want to stay in the good graces of its customers. This starts with that initial activation on the consumer’s end. As noted, the company does not demand a contract, meaning services can be altered or cancelled. Upon activation, the company ships an eero 6 Wi-Fi router to the customer. It’s easy to connect and if a technician is required, it’s free for the user. Additionally, and surprsing for an internet service provider, oxio provides local customer service that doesn’t come with a three-hour wait time on the phone.

Currently, oxio’s internet services are rated 4.4 on Google and 4.7 on PlanHub. For a smaller, scrappier ISP, user reviews can mean the world to further adoption. Positive reception can be critical when potential customers are searching for new alternatives. MobileSyrup’s Jonathan Lamont wrote a piece earlier this year discussing his experience using oxio’s service. For a more broad sense of consumer reception, oxio has garnered a small community on its own subreddit

There are likely a lot of Canadians out there that believe they are stuck with the major ISPs and their premium-priced plans. However, oxio’s transparent business model proves that alternatives exist across the country. Since its launch in 2019, it’s become the fastest-growing independent ISP in Canada. This is largely due to its ability to successfully secure $25 million in Series A funding last year.

If you’re thinking of making the jump to oxio home internet, more information can be found on the company’s website. The company also provides various ways to reach out with any questions you may have.

Zoom video conferencing coming to Tesla vehicles

Zoom says its app is coming to “all new Tesla models soon.”

Little else is known about the video chatting app on wheels, but the video suggests the in-cabin camera (mounted above the rearview mirror) will be used, and then the main screen will display who you’re meeting with.

This is exciting since the Tesla’s in-car camera hasn’t been used for anything beyond ensuring drivers keep their hands on the wheel during auto-pilot driving. The camera angle in the demo footage doesn’t look like it’s coming from this camera, however.

To me, it appears much too low-angled, so it will be interesting to see what quality it actually records in when it rolls out.

Regardless, using the car’s in-built microphones is likely not a bad way to make a digital call.

Disney is winning the streaming wars

Disney’s fourth-quarter financial results reveal that it has more subscribers across its three streaming services than Netflix.

Combining Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu (the latter are both U.S. only), the legacy media company has 236 million paying subscribers. Netflix, by comparison, is sitting at 223 million.

Disney+ is the biggest competitor with 164 million subs, but that’s likely because it’s available in many countries worldwide as opposed to ESPN+ and Hulu.

It’s not all roses for Dinsey. To win this battle, the company has had to raise its streaming losses from $0.8 billion to $1.5 billion USD (roughly $2 billion CAD). The company blames this on increasing production and technology costs, plus a boost in marketing costs, according to a report from Engadget

Disney CEO Bob Chapek claims that rising subscription costs and the eventual launch of an ad-supported tier will help narrow these losses in future quarters.

Twitter attempts to ‘solve’ blue checkmark woes with grey check

Over the last few days, we’ve watched Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, witness firsthand why it’s a bad idea to let anyone pay for verification on Twitter. Now, the social media platform is rolling out a solution to the blue check problem it created — another checkmark.

This time around, it’s a grey checkmark accompanied by an ‘Official’ label, which has started to appear on some Twitter accounts.  The company’s Esther Crawford, who’s heading up the new Twitter Blue subscription that comes with a blue check, tweeted that the new grey check mark was intended to distinguish between accounts the company verified as official and accounts that paid for a blue checkmark.

Not all previously verified accounts will get the “Official” label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures,” Crawford wrote in a follow-up tweet. Crawford also confirmed that Twitter Blue doesn’t include ID verification.

Twitter’s ‘Official’ checkmark in a tweet.

As of this morning, several accounts have suddenly gained a grey ‘Official’ checkmark, which appears underneath an account’s name and handle (@) in tweets and in the account’s profile page. It remains unclear if Twitter plans to open the new ‘Official’ badge up for applications, or if the company will arbitrarily decide which accounts qualify and which don’t.

Twitter’s ‘Official’ checkmark in an account profile.

Moreover, many accounts still have the old blue verification badge, even if they haven’t subscribed to Twitter Blue. For example, I still have my badge despite never paying for Blue — and I don’t plan to start anytime soon. As a result, many Twitter accounts are now double-badged.

While the new ‘Official’ badge is arguably a helpful change that should cut down on the potential for impersonation, there remains a distinct lack of transparency around the system (which was a notable issue with the old verification system). Additionally, the old blue checkmark is more visible than the grey check — coupled with the history behind the blue checkmark, the new double-check system may increase confusion over which accounts are authentic or not.

At the moment, the blue checkmark really only means one of two things: that account paid for Twitter like a loser, or that account was previously verified and hasn’t lost the blue check yet. Most accounts seem to be in the latter camp for now since Twitter delayed the change to the blue checkmark. Now that the U.S. midterm elections are over, that will begin to change.

Pixel 8 series leak reveals alleged codenames, RAM and more

It hasn’t even been a full month since the release of the Pixel 7 series, and we’re already learning about next year’s Pixel 8 series.

It’s worth noting that the leaker, WinFuture, couldn’t outright say that these devices were the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, but it uncovered the details in Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code. The handsets sport codenames Husky and Shiba, and feature 12GB of RAM. Husky sports a display resolution of 2822 x 1344, while Shiba offers a 2268 x 1080-pixel resolution. The resolutions suggest that these displays will be slightly shorter than the previous Pixels.

Both handsets would sport a new Tensor chip, codenamed Zuma; however, this Tensor chip might reuse the G5300 5G modem from the Tensor G2. WinFuture believes that these two are your typical ‘candy bar’ handsets and not foldables. However, it’d be odd if the Pixel 8 Pro ends up featuring a 2822 x 1344-pixel resolution, considering that’d be a downgrade from the Pixel 7 Pro.

Just speaking out of my own beliefs, it’d make sense if one of them were the ever-rumoured Pixel Fold’s outer display, which might explain the shorter aspect ratio and weaker pixel resolution.

However, it’s way too early to know. Google might give us a peek at its Pixel 8 series (and hopefully Pixel Fold) in May at its Google I/O conference.

Meta reducing its workforce by 13 percent

Mark Zuckerberg is laying off more than 11,000 Meta employees worldwide.

Meta operates Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and the move will reduce the company’s workforce by 13 percent.

Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief, shared the figures in a message to employees. He revealed the company will also continue its hiring freeze through the first quarter of 2023.

“I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted,” Zuckerberg said.

The layoffs stem from the company’s move to “significantly increase” its investment during COVID when the world was moving online. Zuckerberg said he, like many others, believed this to be the new norm.

“I got this wrong, and I take responsibility for that,” Zuckerberg wrote. Multiple other companies have found themselves in a similar situation, including Shopify.

Impacted employees will be notified through their emails, mimicking Elon Musk’s recent layoff actions at Twitter.

Meta will focus their resources on other areas, including the AI discovery engine and the metaverse, an area that the company has lost money on. According to The Verge, the company lost $9.4 billion on metaverse technology this year alone.

Impacted employees will receive a severance of 16 weeks of pay and two additional weeks for every year they’ve been at the company. It’s not clear if their severance will include a cut of the Metaverse, but as the way things currently stand, let’s hope that’s not the case.
