Deathloop comes to Xbox Series X/S and Xbox Game Pass on September 20

Bethesda’s critically-acclaimed Deathloop will officially launch on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox Game Pass on September 20th.

The first-person shooter first debuted on PlayStation 5 and PC on September 14th. PlayStation had one-year timed exclusivity on the game, which is why we’re only now getting a formal announcement of an Xbox version.

One benefit of Xbox gamers getting Deathloop later, though, is that all post-release updates are ready from the start, including photo mode and accessibility options. Further, all Deathloop owners will get a free ‘Golden Loop’ update on September 20th, which adds a new weapon, new upgrades, new enemy types, cross-platform player-vs-player multiplayer and, most notably, an extended ending. Although Deathloop garnered much acclaim last year, many did criticize it for an anticlimactic conclusion. It’s unclear exactly what this new ending will add, but it sounds promising on paper.

In any case, it’s fitting that Deathloop is finally on Xbox, given that Bethesda and subsidiary developer Arkane are both owned by Xbox. Despite this, Xbox was legally required to release the game on PlayStation first as part of an agreement signed prior to its acquisition of Bethesda. This was the same case with Bethesda’s Ghostwire: Tokyo, which was released exclusively on PS5 and PC in March. As with DeathloopGhostwire is expected to come to Xbox one year after its PlayStation launch — presumably, some time in late March 2023.

iPhone 14 Pro Max teardown offers inside look at Apple’s new flagship

In a recent teardown of the iPhone 14 Pro Max posted by YouTube channel PBKreviews, it’s, unsurprisingly, revealed that the phone’s internals are very similar to its predecessor.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max features the now-familiar L-Shaped battery (which is actually slightly smaller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s cell) and several other components that match the iPhone 13 Pro’s layout. However, there are a few changes, including the new A16 Bionic chip and a metal plate with graphite pads for improved heat dissipation.

The only other notable changes relate to the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s revamped TrueDepth camera system that houses its Face ID sensor and selfie shooter. The new components that make up the sensor array fit into a 30 percent smaller area when compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, likely to fit within the new Dynamic Island. The smartphone’s new 48-megapixel wide sensor is also visibly larger than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 12-megapixel shooter.

Overall, the internal layout of both smartphones’ components seems nearly identical, with a few notable exceptions.

Samsung unveils new environmental strategy

Samsung says it will achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The South Korean tech giant outlined details in a new environmental strategy it says will help it join worldwide efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Samsung is tackling its Device eXperience (DX) division first, saying operations in the area will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The division includes Samsung’s consumer electronics businesses.

All other operations, including the Device Solutions (DS) division, will reach the goal by 2050. Once reached, Samsung says it will have reduced 17 million tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions.

Focusing on the lifecycle of its products, Samsung says it will create a new system by 2030 that will reuse extracted minerals collected from waste batteries. Samsung is also using 2030 as a benchmark to utilize recycled resin in 50 percent of the plastic used in its products.

“The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The consequences of inaction are unimaginable and require the contribution of every one of us, including businesses and governments,” Jong-Hee Han, vice-chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, said.

The company has joined RE100, an initiative committed to following 100 percent renewable energy. Under the initiative, Samsung will match electric power needs for its international markets with renewable energy in the next five years.

A complete list of initiatives is available on Samsung’s website.

Adobe to acquire Figma in $20 billion USD deal

Photoshop-maker Adobe announced plans to acquire Figma, a popular design tool, for about $20 billion USD (roughly $26.4 billion CAD) in cash and stock.

Adobe announced the acquisition in a press release shortly after rumours emerged Thursday morning about the potential purchase. The Verge notes that Figma heavily competed with Adobe’s XD products in recent years, and has become key for many businesses. In fact, Microsoft relied so heavily on Figma to build Office and Windows that it strained the company’s relationship with Adobe.

Figma’s strong suit has been the web, a place where Adobe has struggled to compete. For example, Adobe only recently started making Photoshop available through the web.

Adobe will eventually combine its community with Figma and will likely start bundling Figma products and services into its ‘Creative Cloud’ suite. Meanwhile, Figma will continue operating as normal, with CEO Dylan Field writing in a blog post that “Adobe is deeply committed to keeping Figma operating autonomously.” Moreover, Field will continue as Figma’s CEO.

Of course, Figma will likely benefit from Adobe as well. The Verge notes that the company wants to leverage Adobe’s experience in areas like 3D, video, vector imaging, and fonts to improve product design.

Adobe plans to hold a conference call at 7am PT/10am ET this morning to discuss its quarterly earnings, but company executives will comment on the Figma acquisition during the call. You can watch a live webcast of the call here.

Apple Watch Series 8 Review: Still the best smartwatch

With the rugged Apple Watch Ultra stealing most of the attention during Apple’s ‘Far Out’ keynote, many people seem to have forgotten that the tech giant also refreshed its Apple Watch Series 7 with the new Series 8.

Similar to the move from the Series 6 to the Series 7, the jump from the Series 7 to the Series 8 is very incremental.

It features the same overall design as the Series 7, including the 41mm and 45mm sizes and GPS/cellular variants, along with the now very familiar ‘Digital Crown.’ New features this year include faster performance thanks to the updated S8 chip that’s also featured in the refreshed Apple Watch SE, though it appears it features the same CPU as last year’s S7. To be fair, the S7 chip was plenty powerful, and my experience with the S8 has been rock solid so far.

Apple Watch Series 8 Low Power Mode

Other new features include body temperature sensing, allowing for more advanced women’s cycle tracking, Crash Detection, more accurate workout tracking, and several other additions powered by watchOS 9 are also coming to older Apple Watches, like the new ‘Low Power Mode’ and additional Watch Faces.

Overall, the Apple Watch Series 8 is very similar to the Apple Watch Series 7, which means it likely won’t be a worthwhile upgrade for Apple Watch users still using a version of the wearable that already features an always-on screen.

Everything new

This is the shortest list of new features I’ve ever put together for an Apple Watch review because Apple didn’t add much to the Series 8 this year.

“Of course, the Series 8 also includes the health features the Apple Watch is now most well known for…”

This year’s marquee feature is temperature sensing and advanced cycle tracking/ovulation. The temperature sensing functionality can also indicate other illnesses or changes that affect your sleep. However, I haven’t been able to test it properly because it takes five days of gathering your body temperature while you’re tracking your sleep before the feature activates.

It’s also important to note that unlike ECG and other Apple Watch health features, body temperature sensing happens in the background and isn’t something you can activate on your own. On the women’s health side, it’s great to see Apple remain one of the few companies to place an emphasis on features like this in its wearables.

I’m planning to test out the Series 8’s expanded period tracking and ovulation feature with my partner’s help. This review will be updated with her thoughts on both features in the coming weeks.

Other new additions include Crash Detection, a feature that, similar to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, most Apple Watch users will likely never need to use and that is impossible to test out. It’s powered by an improved gyroscope and accelerometer capable of sampling motion four times faster than previous versions of the Apple Watch. It offers a welcome piece of mind that the Apple Watch will automatically call emergency services and your emergency contacts if you happen to find yourself in a car accident.

In Aluminum, the Series 8 is available in ‘Starlight,’ ‘Midnight,’ ‘Silver,’ and ‘Product Red,’ while the Stainless Steel variant comes in ‘Silver,’ ‘Graphite,’ and ‘Gold.’ This means that the ‘Blue’ and ‘Green’ versions introduced over the last few iterations have been discontinued and that there isn’t a new colour this year.

And that’s it. The Apple Watch Series 8 still features an expansive always-on display that’s 20 percent larger than the Series 6’s with nearly non-existent bezels. This makes the ability to respond to texts relatively easy, just like it was last year with the Series 7.

Of course, the Series 8 also includes the health features the Apple Watch is now most well known for, like ECG, blood oxygen level, high/low heart rate notifications, fall detection and more. It remains the most capable smartwatch out there for iOS users, but unfortunately, Apple hasn’t added very many new features this year.

Apple Watch Series 8 in hand

watchOS 9 features

All of the features cited in this section are available on any Apple Watch that supports watchOS 9, including the Apple Watch Series 4 and above and even the original Apple Watch SE.

Like in years past, WatchOS 9 includes several new Watch Faces like ‘Astronomy Lunar,’ the wacky ‘Playtime’ and the understated ‘Metropolitan.’ I still prefer the classic ‘California’ Watch Face that I’ve used for the last couple of years customized with ‘Complications’ like battery life, weather, timer and more. Still, the new Faces are a welcome addition to the Apple Watch’s lineup.

I’d like to see Watch Faces opened up to third-party developers, but given it hasn’t yet happened at this point in the Apple Watch’s lifecycle, Apple is unlikely ever to make this shift.

Apple Watch Series 8 Astrology Watch Face Other notable watchOS 9 features include ‘AFib History,’ which shows how frequently your heart is in AFib if you’ve been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, more detailed sleep tracking that includes Fitbit-like stages of rest, and expanded running metrics like vertical oscillation, stride length and more. Several Apple apps have also been reworked, including the Compass app, which now allows you to drop waypoints and record your path to backtrack where you started, alongside a redesigned Reminders and Calendar app.

However, the key watchOS 9 highlight for me is ‘Low Power Mode,’ which extends the Series 8’s battery life to a total of 36 hours while still allowing you to track activity and access other features with battery-draining features like the always-on display off.

Low Power Mode seems like an answer on Apple’s part to people who complain that the smartwatch’s battery life comes in at roughly 24 hours, and I found it helpful during my brief time with the Series 8 in an instance where I forgot to charge it overnight. Flipping on Low Power Mode allowed me not to have to drop it on a charger and continue testing it throughout the day, though I did miss the always-on display.

Apple Watch Series 8 on wrist

In several ways, watchOS 9 is a more substantial update to the Apple Watch than the Series 8’s new physical hardware, making earlier versions of the wearable significantly more capable.

Google Photos gets new collage editor and look for Memories

Google Photos‘ Memories feature is getting a new look.

The update, rolling out now, will let users see more videos, including snippets of longer videos in Photos. The app will also automatically trim videos so you can relive the more critical moments. Some still photos will get a subtle zoom effect to bring movement to the memory. Further, next month instrumental music will be played with some Memories.

Google will also bring more cinematic photos to Memories. These full Cinematic Memories will transform still images into a cinematic experience with music to make your memories feel more like a movie.

Additionally, Google is rolling out a new feature called ‘Styles’ that will add graphic art to Memories to make them pop.

Finally, you can share your Memories with your friends and family on Android (though this feature is coming to iOS and the web soon).

Outside of Memories, a collage editor is also coming to the Google Photos app on iOS and Android.

Xbox PC app’s September update adds improved performance, HowLongToBeat

Microsoft has begun rolling out its September update for the Xbox app on PC.

While the list of changes is relatively smaller, it does add a few pretty neat things.

To start, the update allows the Xbox PC app to launch 15 percent faster, on top of other areas of improved performance. Xbox says this includes the rate of crash-free sessions reaching 99.9 percent and the reports of failed downloads or installs dropping by nearly half. Further, Xbox says its improved relevance for search results to bring them up 20 percent faster.

Additionally, Xbox has added HowLongToBeat (HLTB) integration into its PC app. For the uninitiated, HLTB is a community-driven website that provides estimates on how long it will take to complete a game. Users submit their completion times and HLTB will provide an average accordingly. HLTB has specific metrics for the main story, the main story with some side quests/collectibles, completionist (doing everything in the game) and combined (all playstyles considered).
