iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island visible in screenshots only when in use

During Apple’s big September iPhone event last week, the company touted the ‘Dynamic Island’ as one of the biggest new features of the iPhone 14 Pro.

It replaces the notch with a small pill that houses alerts and specific locations in one interactive location that morphs depending on whichever app or feature you’re using, such as phone calls, music, timers and more.

However, we’re now learning that you won’t always be able to see it, even in screenshots. As first spotted by MacRumors, Dynamic Island is only visible in iPhone 14 Pro screenshots when being used by apps or when the camera/microphone dots are active. In these instances, you’ll see the entire Dynamic Island, including whichever app is in use.

As an example of this, see the above header image, with the right screenshot prominently showing Dynamic Island as the Music app is in use. By comparison, Dynamic Island isn’t displayed in the left image, as the iPhone 14 Pro doesn’t have an app in use.

Of course, this is just one of several elements of the iPhone 14 Pro. A comprehensive breakdown of the handset can be found in our review. The phone itself launches on September 16th.

Hate that new Search button in iOS 16? Here’s how to turn it off

iOS 16 brought a ton of helpful new features to iPhones, but not every change was welcome. For example, the new ‘Search’ button that now appears on the home screen.

The Search button sides below your apps and above the dock where the home screen indicator used to be (the indicator still shows up when you swipe between home screens). But, for most iPhone users, the button will likely be useless since you can swipe down on the home screen to open Search instead.

So, if you want that Search button gone and your precious home screen indicator back, here’s what you need to do:

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll to and tap Home Screen
  • Find the Search section
  • Tap the toggle next to ‘Show on Home Screen.’

That’s all there is to it. If you want to go back to having a Search button, just follow the same steps to bring it back.

If you want to learn more about iOS 16, check out the various MobileSyrup guides, including how to customize your lock screen, how to enable the battery percentage icon, and more.

Elon Musk says he is testing Tesla Steam integration

In July, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed in a Twitter reply that the company intends to add Steam integration to its vehicle in the near future.

Similarly, back in February, Musk said, “We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla.”

Musk said that a demo of the integration should come in August, but it never did. However, according to Musk’s comments yesterday, September 13th, the integration hasn’t been scrapped and is in testing. “I’m testing it today in Palo Alto,” replied Musk to a Twitter comment asking for updates regarding the Steam integration.

Musk, however, did not share a new tentative date for the demo. Tesla’s AI day on September 30th might be a good day to show off the integration.

Steam integration would drastically improve Tesla’s entertainment system appeal among potential and current buyers, and considering Steam’s vast library of titles, it would make Tesla developers’ task easier, as they wouldn’t have to port titles individually to be playable in the vehicle.

Currently,  Tesla’s infotainment system hosts roughly 20 games in the Tesla Arcade app. These apps range from mobile titles like the Beach Buggy Racing 2 and Fallout Shelter to arcade games like Asteroids.

iOS 16 has a slightly higher adoption rate than iOS 15

It seems like iPhone users are excited about iOS 16.

Data compiled by Mixpanel indicates that iOS 16 has had a higher download rate than iOS 15 in its first three days of release.

Mixpanel’s data indicates that after 24 hours of availability, iOS 16 has been downloaded by 6.71 percent of users, compared to iOS 15, which saw only 6.48 percent of users. However, iOS 14, on the other hand, had a 9.22 percent download rate.

Further, in its initial three days release, iOS 16 saw a 10.45 percent adoption rate, iOS 15 had a 9.68 percent adoption rate, and lastly, iOS 14 had a 14.68 percent adoption rate.

With iOS 16’s revamped lock screen, un-sending iMessages and more, it makes sense that it’s seeing a pickup.

The information comes via The Wall Street Journal, after the publication reviewed a Netflix document that the streaming service shared with ad buyers.

Microsoft, which is Netflix’s global advertising technology and sales partner, and Netflix sat down with ad buyers in recent weeks with the intention to lock deals before the new subscription tier’s release later this year. In these meetings, Netflix told ad buyers that it expects to have 4.4 million unique viewers under the new tier by the end of 2022, with the number growing to 40 million by Q3, 2023. Out of the 40 million, it expects 13.3 million viewers to be from the U.S.

It’s worth noting that 40 million unique users don’t mean that Netflix projects to gain 40 million new subscribers via the ad-supported tier, since more than one person per household would be able to use the service per subscription.

“We are still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad supported tier and no decisions have been made,” a Netflix spokeswoman said in a statement given to The Wall Street Journal.

From what we know so far, Netflix is targeting a $7-$9 USD monthly price for the ad-supported tier, or roughly $9 to $11 CAD.

Rumour has it the company is aiming for a November 1st launch to get its ad tier out ahead of Disney+.

Netflix first hinted at a new ad-supported tier in May, after it announced that it lost 200,000 subscribers in Q1, its first quarterly decrease in over ten years. It is currently unknown when the new ad-supported tier will launch, though rumours point to Q4 2022.

WhatsApp’s upcoming local chat backup import/export tool seen in beta

Originally, WhatsApp allowed users to back up chat history to Google Drive, but recent leaks have suggested that an option to export chat backups is coming soon to the messaging service.

Now, according to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has already started testing the feature in the latest beta release v2.22.13.11, and an ‘import’ option is now available, which works in tandem with the leaked ‘export’ option.

If you log into WhatsApp from a new device running WhatsApp v2.22.13.11, you will get the option to “import” a local chat backup, instead of having to import the backup from Google Drive.

This makes sense in instances where you’ve lost access to your Google Drive, or are trying to switch phones and transfer backup over a slow internet connection. According to WaBetaInfo, the feature is still in development, and the import tool doesn’t do anything at the moment, not even in the beta app. There is no tentative release date for the new feature.

Next year’s Pro iPhones will get A17, non-Pro models will get older chips

The new iPhones aren’t even generally available to the public yet, and already details about the iPhone 15 have started to emerge. According to a new report, the iPhone 15 Pro devices will feature an A17 chip made by TSMC, while the non-Pro models will once again get an older chip.

According to Nikkei Asia (via 9to5Mac), the A17 chip will use TSMC’s second-gen 3nm process (dubbed N3E), which is expected to be available in the second half of next year. Currently, the A17 processor is under development. The report also suggests that some M-series chips will take advantage of the smaller 3nm process too.

Nikkei cites people “familiar with the matter” as the source of the information. Specifically, it notes that the A17 will be used in the “premium entry in the iPhone lineup slated for release in 2023,” which will likely be called the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

The report should hardly come as a surprise, however. Apple’s new iPhone 14 line was the first to differentiate between Pro and non-Pro by only giving the Pro iPhones the latest chip. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max sport Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus feature last year’s A15 Bionic chip with an extra GPU core.

Presumably, the non-Pro iPhone 15 models will use the A16 and not the A15 again, but it remains to be seen.

Apple’s efforts to differentiate the Pro and non-Pro iPhone models are likely an attempt to drive sales of the more expensive Pro models. For several years now, the non-Pro iPhone models have arguably been the best option in terms of value — the latest and greatest hardware for less money, with the Pro models really only offering slightly better screens and better cameras. However, by reusing older chips in the lower-priced models, the value argument isn’t as strong. Plus, it’s hard to argue an iPhone 13 owner should get a 14 when there’s practically no difference between the devices.
