Tesla Canada to locate manufacturing facility in Markham, Ontario

Markham, Ontario Mayor shared on social media that Tesla Canada would locate a manufacturing facility in the city to produce manufacturing equipment for use at the company’s ‘gigafactories.’

In a post on Twitter and Instagram, Frank Scarpitti welcomed Tesla, calling it a great addition to “the ‘future car’ cluster of companies” in Markham. You can read the full quote from the image below:

“I am delighted to share that Tesla Canada is joining our already robust automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the City of Markham. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the Gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries.”

Scarpitti also clarified that the manufacturing facility would be located “just south of Highway 7 west of Warden.”

The mayor’s announcement comes just days after Tesla Canada put out a call for applications on LinkedIn, which also included a recruitment video republished by Tesla North on YouTube.

The video shows a short interview with employees at the Markham location who work on battery development, factory design, charging infrastructure, battery CNC machine programming and more.

Edward Rogers can replace independent board directors, judge rules

Edward Rogers won control of Rogers Communications on November 5th following a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that he could replace five independent directors of the company’s board without a shareholder meeting.

As a reminder, the Rogers family has spent the last several weeks feuding over control of the company. It began with Edward Rogers, son of late company founder Ted Rogers, trying to oust CEO Joe Natale (who learned of the scheme via a butt-dial). The plan failed and the Rogers board voted to remove Edward Rogers as the board chair (he remained on the board as a director).

However, Edward Rogers is also chair of the family trust, which owns 97.5 percent of the company’s voting class A shares. As chair of the trust, Edward Rogers can exercise voting control over the appointment of directors, and he attempted to use that power to replace five independent directors of the board with directors loyal to him through a written resolution. For a time, there were two boards claiming to be legitimate — you can read more about the extremely funny timeline here.

Ultimately, Edward Rogers took the whole debacle to a B.C. court to settle the matter, which came down to whether or not he could legally replace the board with a written resolution. The Globe and Mail reports that Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick ruled that Edward Rogers can — she also granted his application for approval of the change and awarded him legal costs.

It’s worth noting that B.C.’s Business Corporations Act allows board changes to be made using this method. Since the Rogers company is incorporated in B.C., that law applies.

“[Rogers Communications] argues strenuously that Edward is ‘thumbing his nose’ at the proper process and that he improperly seeks to exert rights ‘with the stroke of a pen,’” Justice Fitzpatrick wrote.

“However, as I see it, Edward has closely followed the strictures of the articles, as informed by the act where appropriate. This can only be described as respecting the process, not disregarding it.”

The ruling could be bad news for Natale and other company executives

Edward Rogers responded to the ruling in a statement, saying that “the company requires an effective board that shares a strategic vision for the business, is open, deliberate, consistent in its decision making, independent of management, and that always acts in the best interests of the corporation.”

Loretta Rogers, Martha Rogers and Melinda Rogers-Hixon, who support Natale and opposed Edward Rogers’ move to replace the board, said in a statement they were disappointed and called the ruling a “dangerous precedent.”

“We believe that today’s ruling also ushers in a particularly dangerous time for [Rogers Communications]. The company now faces a very real prospect of management upheaval and a prolonged period of uncertainty, at perhaps the worst possible time,” the statement said.

The decision casts a shadow on the future of Natale and other company executives — The Globe and Mail reported that Natale and his 11-member executive team were prepared to leave if Edward Rogers succeeded in reconstituting the board.

All this has taken place amid Rogers’ ongoing bid to acquire Shaw Communications in a deal valued at $26 billion. Perceived instability at Rogers could be another knock against the company and may foil the acquisition. Some opponents of the merger have petitioned the CRTC to delay an upcoming hearing about the Rogers-Shaw deal because of the family feud. However, with Edward Rogers now officially in control, it’s possible the CRTC will press forward with the hearing (assuming no further disruptions give the commission reason to delay).

Google says it’s working on a fix for Pixel 6/6 Pro ghost call issue

Google confirmed its “aware” of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro ghost call issue and is “working on an immediate fix.”

The search giant confirmed it was working to fix the problem in a statement to 9to5Google after several reports emerged Friday that Pixel 6 and 6 Pro devices were calling people randomly. Threads on Reddit and Google’s Pixel support forums claimed that Pixel 6 phones were calling numbers in the middle of the night and without any input from users.

People speculated that Google Assistant was the culprit behind the problem after some reported success in stopping the problem by disabling Assistant on the lock screen. That effectively prevented it from activating (and thus calling someone) while the phone was locked.

Although Google hasn’t yet confirmed the source of the problem, Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii shared on Twitter that launching Assistant and saying nothing would eventually result in it placing a call to someone. It remains unclear why this happens, but it appears that once Assistant activates, it will decide to call a contact.

Some Twitter users replied to Russakovskii, saying they could also reproduce the issue. I couldn’t make it happen on my Pixel 6, but I also haven’t experienced the phantom calling problem at all yet (hopefully, that doesn’t change).

With Google working on an “immediate fix,” the issue should be resolved soon. For those who are suffering from phantom calls, you can disable Assistant on the lock screen to temporarily fix the issue (open the Google app > tap your profile in the top-right corner > Settings > Google Assistant > Lock screen > disable Assistant responses on lock screen).

Apple reportedly made a Death Star iPhone 4 prototype

Welcome to another episode of ‘look at this prototype you’ll never be able to buy,’ this time featuring an iPhone 4 with a Death Star logo on the back.

‘DongleBookPro,’ a YouTuber who has featured several other prototype videos on his channel, shared a new hands-on video with an extraordinary iPhone 4 prototype with several variations from the final public-released iPhone 4.

What primarily sets the prototype apart from the regular iPhone 4 is the Death Star logo. According to DongleBookPro, Apple put the Star Wars-inspired logo to fool leakers into thinking that the device was a knock-off/promotional Star Wars-inspired iPhone rather than a legitimate iPhone 4 prototype.

Further, the Death Star prototype doesn’t have visible screws, whereas the officially released variant had two on the bottom, on each side of the charging port. To access the internals of the prototype, you have to open the SIM card tray and unscrew the housings. Additionally, the prototype features a non-retina display and reportedly runs the earliest build of iOS — 8A133.

Check out the video below to see the iPhone 4 Death Star prototype that was but never will be.

Google adds new ‘Pet Portraits’ to ‘Art Selfie’ feature

Google is one-upping itself by launching a new version of its ‘Art Selfie’ that lets users match their pets with famous artwork.

Back in 2018, Google launched an Art Selfie feature that had users from around the world taking selfies of themselves so that Google’s AI could match their characteristics to works of art from the past. Now, using the Google Arts & Culture App on Android, you can tap on the camera button at the center of the bottom bar to launch a new ‘Pet Portraits’ feature.

This means that when you take a picture of your pet, it compares it with thousands of historical artworks, including paintings, sculptures and old photographs. Google says its Pet Portraits feature can match four-legged animals, birds and fish with famous artwork.

After you’re done snapping a picture of your pet, you’ll be given a percentage of how much your animal matches the artwork. Other Arts & Culture app modes include ‘Art Projector,’ ‘Color Palette,’ ‘Art Filter,’ and ‘Pocket Gallery.’

Google’s Arts & Culture app is available in the Google Play Store.
